So, gun safes. I need one.
I'm looking in the under $1000.00 range.
At least 24 gun...
Preferably at least 30min fire rating.
Waterproof?
Anyone have advice?
Safes to stay away from?
Good manufacturers?
Quality/Value?
I'm looking at this:

I have an old browning prosteel - seems well built. I'm not sure I'd like the new fancy electronic keypad locks on the brands out there today. I like the S&G (sargent and greenleaf) lock set/combination. my2cents.

Okay, before one of the guys in the "safe" business jumps in and educates (translated: chastises) you for your terminology, what you are really looking for is officially a security container, not a safe. Apparently, "gun safes" don't measure up to the criteria required to be an official safe.

Now, I have 2 of those exact Winchesters "safes".
Heres the first one I acquired: (3 yr old pic)

i got my safe at walmart of all places. its a sentry safe with digital keypad (faster to get in, battery operated) and i fit 2 ar's, 2 ak's, and 2 mossberg pistol grip 12 ga's at once, with a shelf that holds most of my ammo and handguns. even comes with lag bolts to bolt to the floor and wall. best $200 ive ever spent

well from my experience i like a dial lock than a electronic just cause i don't have to deal with batteries and such going out and also most come with skeleton keys so if it does die you can still open your safe i would rather just remember a combo than have to hide or buy another safe to put the keys in!

i work at Dick sporting goods part time we sell stack-on products!

i own the stack-on 24-gun safe i bought mine two years go for 430 dollars got a heck of a deal at the time since it was a 600 dollar safe and i bought it on family night where i got extra off! my safe is the older model elite 24 with one handle not typical three spokes. the newer one weighs less i guess cutting cost cause of materials i think and is a little shorter which explains the loss in weight! things i would keep in mind are:

weight: at least 450 pounds if not more unloaded the more the better less chance of it walking off and bolt it to the concrete if you can!
door hinges: on the out side for fire proofing and multiple point locking system!

water proofing: is a simple task all you are paying for is the fact it says its water proof and some rubber oring or disk for the two bolt holes on the bottom of the safe and rubber/door sealer going along the the door and right next to the fire proofing plastic strips. you could buy this at a hard ware store if you really think you need it. might save you a little if you find a good safe with out water proofing!

fire rating of course as well! mine is i think 30-45 min i cant remember of the top of my head and the temp either i would have to check!

Another thing to consider where are you going to put it? basement upstairs ect... the question is how you going to get it there if it weighs XXX number of pounds. what ever you do don't use the delivery service at dicks its out sourced and they charge basically half of what you are paying for the safe just to get it to your first floor. i bribed my friends with a steak dinner and borrowed my friend truck and filled it up with gas coasted me 100 bucks give or take with food and gas to get it where i wanted it.

my .02 coop Note: theGinsue im to lazy to type out "security containers" as you are correct i like how "Safe" is only four letters! [Tooth]

Do you happen to know if the Field and Stream model is really a stack-on product?

Now, once you decide on a "safe" for your firearms, consider keeping them all in silicon gun socks. They will actually increase the protection from moisture as well as fire.

no problem, yes it is a stack-on with just a field and stream logo on it same safe! field and stream is likes dicks name brand for example they just put there logo and name on it but stack-on makes it!

forgot to mention they are on sale often sorry about that glade you looked at the add!

also it is not waterproof but doesn't mean you cant make it water proof if you go in and look at one look at the 28 and 24 guns safes on where they put the water or fire proofing stuff you will see kind of what i am saying!

A friend recently purchase a Patriot Safe. We went to the Denver sportsman show when I was in CO in January and he talked to the different vendors but preferred Patriot. He got a discount from buying at the show - is there an upcoming show you may be able to attend and shop around?

yeah that is about the size of the other safe I bought (now it is my dads since I got the bigger one). I liked it a lot. I love the digital keypad. I never want to deal with a dial lock. I can be in my safe in under 2 seconds. who knows how long a manual lock would take.

These require batteries, right... and a bypass key for when the battery dies?
Have you had to deal with that?

if the battery dies, you put in another one. the combo is stored. just pull the battery and put another one in and you are good to go. no bypass key to worry about. very simple.

it really is a great system...and depending on how much you get into your safe you really don't have to worry about it. you can even just replace the battery the same time you change out your smoke detector batteries and you have nothing to worry about.
even go so far as to buy a lithium...that thing will probably last 5 years

Yeah I was thinking about that as well...what if my electronic lock completely failed or malfunctioned then how would I get it....then again what would happen if my combo lock malfunctioned or became jammed or something.

guess it is a risk either way

Would an EMP, from a detonation, prevent you from getting into an electronic keypad safe?

Or maybe more importantly, is whatever an EMP does to circuitry permanent? Could it be easily repaired?

BigBear
03-29-2010, 15:05
The electronics in a key pad are relying on a battery for power. Batteries rely on internal chemical reactions to function and there-fore will not be a considering factor in an EMP. Depending on what electronics located in the keypad (cellenoids/etc [sp?]) it may or may not function. From my understanding of things, the cellinoids (sp?) used to move the locking bars can be operated on less than 12 volts (DC) power.

Lock only exist to keep honest people honest. Unless it's diamond plated, it can be smashed with a hammer/chisel, etc. Once inside, with a rudimental knowledge of electronics, one can trace the opening wires (and completely bypass the numbered keys) to the cellenoids or connection points. Attach a strong enough battery and pop, your safe is open. (You can acutally try this on your outside access garage door opener if you have one)

I personally think that a mechanical dial operation along with a key (key must be present to open with dial combo) is the best at deterring criminals. If it takes too long to open: Make a rubber key to keep in the slot and keep your dial one number from activation. Just make sure you reset and remove the key when you go on vacation! lol.

Bottom line is that your $4K top of the line, state of the electronic art "safe" can be opened with $30 worth of hammer, chisel, wire strippers and betteries. I think electronic safes are easier to open than traditional safes.

There are electronic safes that "trip" when sensors or other elements are deemed "damaged" (this includes you forgetting to change your batteries!!!). The ONLY way to open then is to cut.

If you can wait for black friday, buy your safe then.

My friend and I shopped around for about 4 months before black friday. Really comparing the specs/features and qualities in the lower price range. We decided on the Stack-On (Field and stream version) 24 gun safe. I wanted the 28 gun but it was too big of a price jump for the little bit bigger of a safe.

On black friday the price went down to 450.00 with a 50.00 mail in rebate. We found a Big R ad for the same safe for 400.00 in store. Dicks matched it, plus still gave us the rebate forms, and they were running a 20.00 dicks gift card with purchases of 200.o0 or more or something like that.

So I essentially got the safe for 330.00. I am VERY happy with it for that price. I just got my rebate check about 2 weeks ago. I procrastinated on the form filing. :-)

Ya. I was quite conflicted about it this past year. I have always boycotted the stores on those days for 2 reasons. I refuse to deal with such a high population of oblivious, inconsiderate, people. Granted you run into a few every day, I wasn't about to subject myself to it exponentially. Second, I don't want to support employers forcing everyone to work such ungodly hours on the day after a holiday. In all reality, stores could throw a big sale any day of the year, have the normal open time and publicize it and still make out quite well. But they don't.... :(

Sadly this was one year where I felt I really needed a gun safe in preparation of getting room mates, and for that big of a steal, I couldn't pass up. I could have even passed 150.00 off or something.

So coop - Kudos to you for bending over for the american shopper.

I didn't use that technique with my first Winchester safe, but I did do it with the second. It's difficult to find 2 friends to help you get those down into your basement - twice. I had to get more creative the second time around.

After seeing that video, I'm carring in the house as well. And at 150 post you have a long ways to go to catch up to "someone else".

If you really want security in your home... walk outside, pretend you don't own the place and just walk around it outside and look at everythign you see and say, how could I get in? What around here could I use to get in. I've thought about places people could free climb on the rock face thing, to the roof and into a window on the 2nd floor if it wasn't locked, or drop down through the basement and break a window since they will be visibly hidden and it should help muffle the noise, etc etc....

Alright...
Research almost complete...
I was looking at the Big-R sale - a Liberty safe - Patriot Model (http://www.libertysafe.com/safe_colonial.php) (aka Colonial)23 gun for ~1250.00 after sale discount and tax...
BUT...
www.gunsafes.com (http://www.gunsafes.com) has the Winchester (http://www.gunsafes.com/Winchester-Ranger-Series-Gun-Safe-45-minute-24-Gun-Safe.html) ranger- delivered for 840.00 - but I haven't completed my research...
Also thinking about the Winchester Legacy Series (http://www.gunsafes.com/Winchester%20-Legacy-Series-Gun-Safes-1-Hour-Fire-Safes.html)
So - let's hear it:
Color sucks - not enough bolts - bad design - bad tumbler - bad lock -
Interior is crap...
Give it up ...
What do YOU think?

Keep in mind that she'll be in Colo Spr (and so will the safe).

You'll need a way to transport the safe up North.

Nah... I think minimum would be in the 75 to 85 % range but I don't want to suggest that I know what someone else would do.

Let me see if I can find here number and call here - see if she still want's to sell it.

UPDATE: Still haven't made the purchase yet...
Falling into my usual MO of learning all there is to know, then finding what I want by searching high and low.... then back off and let the dust settle to see if I still think the one I found is the 'right' one.

Silver series (http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/gunsafes/detail.asp?value=001F&cat_id=160&type_id=48558)... I might be interested - but I am in Colorado Springs.
What is the sale all about?

Are you in the springs? We have a delivery guy that is awesome. This is his everyday job, to move gun safes. I would have to check on his pricing to move it down there. The boys in the shop would have better info if you want to call them. 303-532-2951 ask for Casey.

if the battery dies, you put in another one. the combo is stored. just pull the battery and put another one in and you are good to go. no bypass key to worry about. very simple.

Ever wonder how your d-pad would do in a fire? I'll stick to the standard combo dial as I have no house apes around so I'm able to have a couple things out of the safe. Anyways I was just bumping this to let you folks know that costco is selling that Cannon for $579 again.

why you dont buy a crappy safe.

even I worry after watching this video. But, if I had less, I would really worry. The safe is in the video is the Liberty Centurion, which is at least as nice as most safes sold in sportsmans, gander, bass pro. I have never been to sams or costco, so I cant speak about them.

A crappy safe is better than no safe at all. Its just not very realistic for some folks to go and drop $5-$20k on a real safe to protect a few things. It took some time for me to get enough coin together to pick up the unit I have now but I still had to have something to get me by as I couldn't imagine just having all my stuff just laying around the house...this is where the crappy safes come in handy.

i agree. that is why i saved up forever, for the one i just bought. i have another safe, but it is not fireproof. it is 3/8 plate body, with 1/2 plate door. it weighs 800 or so, without fireproofing.. my new one weighs over 1000. it has fireproofing but only 11guage body. i wish i could afford more. but, at least I made the attempt to stop the dirtbags.

usaa insures guns cheaper than the nra policy, at least in my experience. so that is who, i have a policy with.

Ok - I started this thread 6+ months ago...
I researched this exhaustively...
Now- Finally!
I just ordered my safe...
I went with a Liberty Lincoln (http://www.libertysafe.com/safe_lincoln.php) 35 gun safe...
Why?
Transferrable Warranty...
16... count 'em 16.... 4 way 1.25" locks
90 min fire rating
ball bearing hard plate
A bunch more reasons that make this safe the best deal FOR ME...
Plus - I found a guy that does them at wholesale cost...
PM me if you are looking for a great safe... and a great deal.

I need a small 2-3 Gun Safe...

Small, Decent.
It doesn't have to stand up to an atomic Bomb or a Bulldozer.
Just be a deterrent and provide reasonable safety for my SINGLE AR and a few Handguns.
I don't need anything big enough to hide a small family of refugees in.
Suggestions:?

I've read that if you install drywall inside of your safe that you will have a fireproof minute rating; but I don't know the minute time.
Plus, a 90% all steel AK is much more fire resistant than a aluminum AR-15; besides the barrel.
