Just wondering what the general opinion is about which event you think is most likely.
Short term natural disaster, like snowstorm that cuts power for weeks
Nukes/terrorist attacks
economic meltdown/dollar collapse
global cooking, er, I mean warming, er, I mean climate change.
Govt. clampdown on civilians
meteor strike
aliens from outer space attack
Plague that wipes out large number of people
I'm going to go with economic problems, maybe a collapse of the dollar down the road.

Anything and everything I can think of except hurricanes and tsunamis. Oh, and subterranian crab people. I don't think there's any of those either.
I'm mostly preparing for Tornadoes, hail, and expanding clay.

"Oh, and subterranian crab people. I don't think there's any of those either."
Note to self, move #2 to the bottom of the list.........
Mainly 7 day supply of food and water, then working on 1 month in the event of an unexpected crisis where a dash to Walmart would be riot!
If it takes hot water to cook or comes out of a can and I don't have to hear my wife gripe about it I will stock it. Would not want to inconvenience her!

Im ready for martial law, but i guess everything i have for that would cover a fallout too. I think something that most people are forgetting to get is real trip wire....
self sufficiency. Not needing to leave home for 30 days is my goal.
food/water/protection.

My apologies. I completely forgot to include zombie attack to the list. LOL.
If we've got to deal with zombies then I'm hoping for the fast running zombies. Those slow ones from the 70's don't look like much of a challenge at all. But the updated version, now those look like a challenging target practice session to me.[M2]
I fear the EMP. And giant insects. But mostly the EMP.
Preparing for that one is definitely a tough one.
im preparing for when my wife finds out about all my girl friends, tiger's wife has nothing on my wife haha. now that will be a shtf moment

Mostly I am trying to get prepared for economic meltdown/dollar collapse and Govt. clampdown on civilians.
After that...
The return of Mothra:
(And if Mothra comes back - then Godzilla WILL battle Mothra!)
Tokyo WILL be destroyed.

Additionally, this will cause mass confusion, because then my lips won't synch to the words I am saying.
Mothra is funny. Doesn't Japan have any hoses?

To me the underlying issue with any of these scenarios is people. A single human being is intelligent, clever and in general can be dealt with. People, however have the tendency to act like fcktards when the SHTF. Therefore, my main concern is not zombie, virus, meteor, tyrant, government, food shortage, no hairdryer, whatever... My main concern is keeping the muzzle pointed at all the dumbass people who will panic, lose their sense of morality, and in general act in any way that endangers me and my loved ones.
I don't think you have to be prepared for a specific scenario. It would be like asking why someone carries concealed, for muggings, carjackings, assaults.... I carry concealed for all those reasons and any other reason that might require using a gun.
Same thing for being prepared for a disaster. Being prepared if you have to stay home for a few weeks, or leave for a few weeks. A decent firearm, some food, water and medical supplies and then a long term plan on how to keep replenishing them as needed.
As to which cause of a disaster is more likely, all of them are extremely unlikely....

im betting on economic collapse. (we are not far from it) if that happened, then people would literally turn into hungry zombies. Chances are, if your neighbor knows you have food, he will try to get it if his kids are hungry. people turn into wild animals when there is no order. prepare for 6 months if you can. get as much as you can today, because you might not be able to tomorrow.

build a Faraday cage yet?
any electronics that are in a Faraday cage should theoretically be protected..
store all electrical/electronics you want to still work within the Faraday cage- unless they are devices that require infrastructure to work (cell phones, etc).. and things like a car with a computer obviously present a challenge..
oh, and any grid-tie you have should have a surge suppressor, including an air-gap suppressor... but chances are the power grid will be Tango Uniform anyway..
I haven't done all this, but do own some Diesel vehicles that are almost impervious to EMP.. (if I had a spare starter, alternator, etc stored in a Faraday cage they'd be good)
it IS possible to harden electronics against EMP... the military & aerospace industry does this as a rule.. think shielding & surge supression

For the 2012 one, Y2K let me down.
I'm still eating up the institutional size cans of refried beans I hoarded for that one.
And yes I am definitely full of it.
P.S.
Be sure to ground your Faraday cages with at least two 8 ft. X 5/8 in. grounding rods & #6 solid bare copper wire.

And when lined and grounded work just fine. You want to line the can so nothing touches the sides. Some of my items are semi protected and some are very well protected. A well grounded aluminum shed makes a great cage. ;) And I own a Dodge 12v....

I have a military background in electronic countermeasures. Truth is regardless of the protection provided (short of being deep underground) most electrical and electronic equipment will not function if the electromagnetic pulse is strong enough. The Faraday shield is more important in containing electromagnetic signals that may impart intelligence value. Thus keeping data sniffers from reading the emanations from your computer.
Protecting your vehicle from EMP could prove difficult if your vehicle was close to the source of the pulse. The cables from the battery to the starter could melt from the induced current of the pulse.
Military aircraft have special components that direct the pulse away from critical systems. Alot of control systems now use fiber optics, as fiber is basically immune to the effects of a large electromagnetic pulse.
So...how do you protect your vehicle from the effects of EMP? Use a quick disconnect switch like those sold for RV batteries that has a switch incorporated into the battery terminal clamp. That makes sure the pulse doesn't short circuit your starting system. Also make sure the vehicle is grounded to earth ground. My newer GM vehicles will be dead as they both rely on microprocessors for engine management. I plan on riding out on horseback...below are some links that provide insight to EMP effects:

It's not the subterranean crab people that get you; it's those damn Graboids.
30 days worth of food and water so you don't have to leave the house is good. So where you gonna poop? My guess is that if society collapses and the mob is rampaging through the streets, public sanitation may suffer from technical difficulties.

thats why you store water, just because the water is off doesnt mean the drain wont haul poop away from your house. fill that tank with rain water, and dont flush just because you pissed in it. keep an extra phone book around too ;)
in the event of a govnt collapse, you could use old paper statements/bills, govnt tax docs.... Then you could enjoy the irony while on the shitter.

since I live so close to Norad, Ft. Carson, Peterson AFB, Shreiver AFB, and the airforce academy I am preparing for terrorist attacks and takover of my community. the second would be an economic meltdown in which situation looters and criminals will run rampant trying to survive.

I actually got some surplus tripwire, comes in green brown and brown-yellowish colors on a wood spool. You can make traps for rabbits with it, right? There's a lot of bunnies and those little fat birds on my property.

Terrorists don't think tactically, they value targets for their propaganda value. So there isn't much chance they'll attack NORAD or Colorado Springs.

I doubt that is the same response I would have recieved from you on
September 12, 2001. I also believe that the naval bases, army base, and norad do have the propoganda value that you speak of. Maby I should not have said terrorists maby armies from forign countries would be more appropriate. If civilians off the streets in the middle east could plan the attacks of the twin towers on september 11, 2001 that makes me wonder what their government can plan, what the chinese can plan " Pearl Harbor", or any other country with an army large or small.

Agreed. Denver actually presents greater target value from the propaganda potential, than Colo Spr does.

True. But play out a civil collapse for a while, and suddenly other countries may perceive what is happening as a threat to them and strike as a defensive measure. I personally wouldn't want to be in any of those places if that went down.

I agree. I was just specifically responding to the potential for a terrorist attack here in Colo Spr.
The effects of an economic collapse, political revolution, etc. will effect everyone in any metro setting.
An American economic collapse WILL have an adverse effect on most every nation in the world. Potential exists for them to take advatage of our state and attack us. I doubt that will occur, but it's possible.

Yes, that makes some sense. If NK or Iran attacks us, they might find it advantageous to take out NORAD. Of course they'll hit Cheyenne Mountain not realizing that the real work goes on out at Peterson :p
On a side thought, should Mexico fall to the cartels and become a rogue narcostate, THEY might be more interested in shutting down NORAD.
If civilians off the streets in the middle east could plan the attacks of the twin towers on september 11, 2001 that makes me wonder what their government can plan, what the chinese can plan " Pearl Harbor", or any other country with an army large or small.I've always rejected the idea that the 9/11 attacks were some sort of super complex, well planned, "genius" attack. Its just a bunch of guys that attended flight school, bought plane tickets and box cutters and synchronized their watches. I know plenty of Jr High kids that can wargame more complex (and tactically effective) plots. I don't say that to minimize the tragedy of the day, but the plot just wasn't that complex (besides, Tom Clancey, Thomas Harris and I think a couple other thriller authors already did the hard lifting and came up with the idea).
I'm prepared for 30 days depending on no one. Thats solid. I have supplies for longer than that, things like water and fuel, no....
For me the most likely scenarios would be some type of natural disaster or Financial meltdown that causes widespread panic and civil disobedience.

Some years ago while I was still operating my little repair shop here in Bailey, I had 3 customers who all worked for Martin Marietta, different divisions, and they didn't know each other. After getting to know them I discovered they each had serious fallout shelters built on thier properties, one even included a 5000 gallon water storage/filtration system. On guy drove his 3/4 ton 4x4 truck with pop-up camper EVERYWHERE, and it was loaded down with all kinds of supplies, several thousand rounds for his AK, generator with fuel, you name it. When I asked them who/what they were afraid of I got the SAME answer from all 3, "nothing on THIS planet".
