View Full Version : Where should I visit in Colorado

I need to get out and explore this state some this year. Where are some good places to go? I make outings with the Jeep club, but I want to try finding some places when I have a bit more time.

Ideally, I'd be looking for some land to buy. I know that I don't want to live down here in Pueblo forever, it's just too brown. I think my ideal spot would be, 10 acres on the side of a mountain, where there aren't a lot of neighbors, but is still less than 15 minutes from some kind of town or city. I know that's a magic feat, but I have time to start looking.

So let me know if you've found a particularly beautiful slice of CO!

Hey! I remember you from the Jeep forum..... Never met you in person but remembered the name. If my memory serves me, you have a ZJ and were a site admin there right?

I too am thinking that in a few years I would like to sell and get some acreage but still be close enough to commute to work.

I like the Twin Lakes area. It has the panoramic view and in the summer you can drive to Aspen. I live in Pueblo too, you are right it is dull. Closest real regular town is Buena Vista. Only thing is the winters are bitterly cold and your house would probably need to have a good wood stove to be warm economically. Check it out!

+1 to Casa Bonita.

Also, you can find land in Golden Gate Canyon that fits your requirements.

Same person, with a ZJ, but not a site admin.

I have been to Casa Bonita when I was a kid. I read a recent review of it online and they said it had gone downhill a lot. There is more than one, right? My dad grew up in Lakewood, so we came here a lot on vacation as a kid.

I'm putting all these places on a list and looking at them with google maps.

I spent a weekend at a house in the hills over evergreen. I loved it. It's expensive tho.

A beautiful area is up Rifle Pass north of Rifle. 10 minutes from town and within an hour of Junction. The western slope is very differrent than the eastern front range.

Another beautiful area 10-15 minutes or so from a town is up the Rio Grande northwest of South fork.

Just some thoughts.
One of the most beautiful places I've been is heading up Wolf Creek Pass, closer to South Fork. There is a forrest access/logginh road that goes to the south-east. Up to Fox Mountain. Man, I wish I could live there!! Winter would be brutal though. It's about 10 minutes out of South Fork.

Western Slope on I-70 between Silverthorne and Grand Junction just has such a massive variation in terrain and vegetation. It is a must see.

Take a trip over Engineer Pass, between Silverton and Quray. That is San Juan county in the SW corner of the state. It's definatley the most beautiful place in Colorado, and it's where I go Elk hunting every year.

If you get a chance, stop by nearby Lake City as well, and go fishing at Lake San Cristobal. It's breathaking.

I found a neat place called Tin Cup, near Taylor Res. Worth a look, great land but not to close to anything. We did make it over the pass from Gunnison in a 79 MGB but I would recommend the Jeep. Access from the east is not bad from Buena Vista.

I camp out there a lot. My family loves Taylor Resv. Love Tin Cup and Mirror Lake. I used to camp near just outside of Pitkin around Middle Quartz Creek.

She DID jump in the water. She talks about it all the time.

No wait, she jumped in at Glacier Lake. I'll have to ask about the details again.

Uh oh.. I hope she did NOT jump in hanging lake... She could get jailed. Supposed to protected by all these laws as one of the last pure travertine lakes and human exposure will cause failure, etc, etc.

Another place to visit is the hot mineral pools out at Glenwood... Those were nice!!

I can't agree with this enough. The "Million Dollar Highway" between Silverton and Ouray is one of the prettiest drives I've ever done ... too bad it was in the PT Cruiser and not in my Porsche 914 :p

In Silverton, find a place called "Mother Clucker's Chicken" and get the chicken Philly ... to-freakin'-die-for (I hear their wings are good too).

In Ouray, stop at "The Mr Grumpy Pants Brewing Company" (bring cash, he don't do plastic). Good beer and an interesting place in general.

If I could find a way to make a living there I'd move to Ouray in a heartbeat.

I've heard of Hanging Lake, but I have no idea where (specifically) it is. Isn't it somewhere near Glenwood? Anyone have specific directions to get there?

Which place is protected? Hanging Lakes, or Glacier Lake? Or both?

Just looked up "travertine". Had never heard of it before. That's kinda cool.

It is towards glenwood springs. They have signs on the highway informing about the lake and the exit. So it should be pretty well marked without knowing where you are going. I don't have details any more though since this was years ago before I was even a driver so I didn't pay much attention. I just know that 2 years ago when I went to vegas I saw the signs.

Some people even use travertine to finish surfaces in their houses... Anyways, hangining lake, travertine lake, whatever you want to call it is protected. After the hike up to it (a great killer hike!!) there are plenty of signs and "border" fences asking you not to touch or get in, blah blah blah. It really is a gorgeous area and would suck if someone did mess it up....

Yes, it is out by Glenwood. <--The hot springs are fun too! You can jump in those, lol.

I looked up an article about the lake and it just talks about people not disturbing the environment. Doesn't mention anything about any particularly fragile ecosystems or anything.

From what I've read and understood is that the way travertine is made naturally, the oils on human skin that would wash off while in the water could destroy the travertine. I'm not a ecologist/biologist/geologist, etc so I'm not sure. But there were plenty of signs up there on the walkway asking people to please not touch/get in the water.

That must have changed.... cus years ago it was ok to go wade into the water and stand under the water fall.

Guess so, I was there less than a year ago and the signs asked to stay out because of the delicateness of the naturally made travertine.

Anyways, this is all a moot point.

Another place to visit close to CO is Yellowstone!!!
