Just got an email from Costco, I really don't know if this is a good deal but it seem logical to have something like this on hand just in case. Are there better options?

Another survival forum I read has covered this Costco kit and says it's really low on daily calorie intake and is not worth the money. I don't know the details of it but thought I'd pass that on.

Insufficient Calories for Survival
Pros: excellent longevity, minimal storage space used, great waterproof packaging, variety for your emergency supplies
Cons: high in sodium, 20 servings per day needed for necessary calories
"Buyer should be aware that the calorie content is insufficient for human survival. The product specifies that an adult would consume 5 servings per day. Unfortunately, that would provide about 500 calories. Calorie consumption varies from person to person, but is generally at least 2000 calories per day. So you will definitely want to buy a lot more of this product in order to have an adequate earthquake supply"

Geez, 500 calories? How can they think anyone could survie on that and no meat. I do want to stock up on something besides beans and canned corn.

would be good for side dishes, but not to live on.
there was a class action suit a couple of years ago about the claims vs food content of the bucket. The calories are vary low as describe above.

^ this.
Get a bucket, but have higher calorie options to add. Plus it's all ready sealed 10-20 years is pretty good.

For those that are wanting to start this might be ok. I have not taken a look at one in real life so would reserve any further comment.

Are you kidding me that is a pretty good deal. Nobody said you have to live off of it but its always good to have extra stuff around. Who want to live off meat only diet. Digestion on a meat based diet is very slow, you need veggies to speed up the process.

Calories are king, especially in a stressful situation. This kit is marketed to people who think having one in the closet is all they have to do. Plus the fact that you had better have access to sufficient water (heat is optional) to reconstitute the food.

I think you're right - these same folks will have a case of bottled water for a family of 4 and call it good.
They want to believe in their naive' way that they are prepared for the worst.

It is not IF, it is definitely WHEN, this storm hits the fan. I hope MOST folks will see the writing on the wall. The more that do - the easier our (collective) fate. I do not hold much hope for those who stand blindly along the road.

There will be 2 types standing beside the road. Type 1 that just wants a hand out because they failed to prepare, and Type 2 that looks like thy just want a handout while they are actually just a distraction from the bandits setting the trap for you.

I have 2 20lb bags of rice. 242 calories per cup. I paid about $15 a bag. Rice can supplement alot of meals. All of Asia swears by it!
too bad u's all live in the city... we stock up just for regular life for 6 months, Costco 2 or 3x's a year. and then BAM.. grow some, kill the rest. Freeze, dry, whatever it takes.
The other thing people assume is that they are going to have a place to grow all this stuff. What if you are living in a cave on the side of a rocky mountain or something?

I've got one of those buckets that someone got at Costco and gave me. Mine lists a lot more calories than the one online lists. For example, the Western Stew on mine lists 241 calories per serving when the one online lists 110. The bucket I have is a smidge under 40,000 calories total.
I disagree that you need 2000 calories a day to survive unless you’re covering some ground by foot, but if you were going to actually eat that much then this bucket would feed 1 person for 20 days. If you’re just sitting around holding down the fort for those 20 days then I think your belly would be plenty full and happy, but your blood pressure maybe through the roof with all the sodium in these things.

Take a look on Google for some base caloric intake calculators. It figures your height weight and age to tell you how many calories your body needs to survive as basicalyjust a bump on a log and not lose or gain weight. I'm 25 and in decent shape and mine is around 1800.

BEER you can live off it indefinately......
Yup, that's why I make my own. No need to stockpile in case SHTF. Once you have the equipment you can make "beer" out of virtually anything. Nice to know you will never run out of booze. In fact, the pioneers made wine out of dandelions...food for thought.
where is i good place to get the supplies to make beer or wine?

Maybe I should start a homebrew thread...
Where are you?
CS - I have been to Old West Homebrew many times and they have always been helpful. 229 East Pikes Peak Avenue
Metro Area - I currently get everything at Beer at Home in Englewood. They are awesome. 4393 South Broadway
Another location in Westminster at 1325 W. 121st Ave
Many people like the Brew Hut in Aurora...they also do online order. www.thebrewhut.com (http://www.thebrewhut.com) 15120 E. Hampden Ave.
Used to go to What's Brewin' in Boulder but I think they closed...
Online - I like www.morebeer.com (http://www.morebeer.com) www.midwestsupplies.com (http://www.midwestsupplies.com) and www.northernbrewer.com (http://www.northernbrewer.com)
There are many more in the state and countless places online which usualy have better prices but going to a store is the best way to get started. You can chat for hours with the people at most stores and they are more than happy to help you with anything. Most even have homebrew in the back that you can sample if you ask...
Best books - How to Brew by John Palmer (my fav), Homebrewing Guide by Dave Miller and the The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian (the homebrew bible)

Take a good look at the daily calorie intake on that bucket of food-I seem to remember reading on another forum that it was not the good deal it appeared to be. JMHO [Beer]

Agreed it was answered earlier but I think the solution is not to see it for what they say it is, but what it really is....added side dishes, but the new stuff they have, interesting.
