View Full Version : Do you ever worry about:
People of the trades in your house possibly stealing things?
I am having blinds installed today and the guy is a stand up guy for sure, definitely does great work, but I have had some shady comcast or directv people also that I watched like a hawk.
I did lock up my tool box in the garage and made sure the guns are all secured.
Well aren't you there the whole time?
I feel the same, people are low by nature. Whats the saying. "Locks keep honest people honest". I just had the head unit taken from the wifes SUV like two weeks ago, right out of the driveway. It's sad to say but there are hardly any honest people left in these times.
Well aren't you there the whole time?
yeah but they can still snag little things. kind of like if you take your car to get detailed or worked on, or especially if it gets towed...things disappear.
I hate to worry too much but on the other hand I hate having thing taken from me as well.

i dont let anyone else in my house. me, the wife, and kids. but, everyone else fuck off.
I always get a kick out of my fiance's mom (who is from El Salvador) hating on Mexicans (her husband was from Mexico). Our land lord was doing some repairs in our bathroom and she went on and on about how we should clear out our whole house because she thought the work crew would be Mexicans and would clear us out.

I work for Comcast in Greeley, so I am in peoples houses all day. Most people dont even know what you are doing or where you are at, they just sit on the couch and let you work. I have never been thrown out of a house but a couple guys I work worth have, customer just didnt like them. I did have an old lady send in a survey on me a few years ago saying she feared for her life and her valuables while I was there but never acted uncomfortable around me? She said I looked like a convict [ROFL1] You should see some of the nasty houses we have to go in, believe me we try not to touch any more then we have to in most houses.
When I delivered pizza, people would invite me in all the time. I would always politely decline.

I noticed that to. My wife's sister married a Columbian. And he dogs Mexicans all the time and Mexican food.

The "Mexicans" from Mexico are about the most racist, but the other south american countrys bad mouth the Mexicans? At least the somalis hate whites and mexicans equally. Greeley is a fun town to work in, you see all kinds of fake ID's some good, some a 3rd grader could make. And most of the drivers on the road dont have a license, maybe an ID card if that, but they just drove up.
I had some work done in my yard. The contractor called for the underground locators to check for buried lines. The Comcast guy showed up in a Comcast truck and wearing Sons of Silence motorcycle gang colors. He wouldn't have got in my house.
I'll never let Comcast in my house.
Well,, I know it from both sides.. 1) You really don't have anything worth Me loseing my job over.. 2) I don't have anything worth You getting a complete beatdown before I call the cops..

Yes I do. I live in a nice townhome complex and the lawn people will scope your garage if it is open and look in the windows. I also saw the roofers peeking in windows so when they got to my house I put sheets up.
Funny thing, all these snoopers and peepers were of south american descent, probably illegal, they don't speak a lick of english. I got the evil eye from a couple of the little fuckers. They are jealous because they are nothing and will never amount to anything more than ant shit.
I'd like to show a few of the bastards where the Looper and Ritter live, give the bigshots a taste of their damn sanctuary city.
We had Direct TV installed a couple of moths ago. The guy was in 4 rooms and in and out of the garage and house for like 4 hours. He was never out of my sight. I followed him and watched him like a hawk the whole time he was here. At least 2 times he said "hey man, I'm good you can just go about your business I dont need any help". Yeah sure thing pal. That only made me stick to him closer. I got to much shit to have to worry about some punk stealing something from me.

Guys, you know what? The vast majority of tradesmen who you will ever have in your home are honest guys who would never even dream of stealing from you. Period.
You know what else? It took me as many years of apprenticeship to get my license as it did for you to go to school get your college degree. Damn right, I'm a blue collar guy, but I am not a second class citizen, criminal, pervert, or other garden variety freak.
Seriously, this kind of thing is why I absolutely detest service work.

Am nuts. Becasue my Brother brings home meth heads at all hours so I go crazy thinking about my shit. Trades folks are ok sometimes. needed the heater replaced and he had to go into the basement (my tin foil hat area), he just did his thing and left. My grandpa had a R. nurse come to the house a few times and she flipped the fuck out, I did not know she was coming and had two rifles on the bench and 12 mags and she called the cops after she left. cops come up to my dad and tells him he got a report about some"criminal activites" in our area and asked my dad if he knew about anything, dad "nope, check with my neighbors, I think there REDS"(obama sign in there yard).
just show them your biggest, nastiest, black rifle. And then proceed to let them know your half crazy. They'll be gladly on their way when their done. I trust the average working man, it's the creepy weird guys with laptops that scare me. Happy to live in the hills though. The people up here are way more crazy than the roughest part of Denver.
My car got towed and impounded once, I had one of those mobile dvd players in the backseat and swoosh it was gone

great, now I'm all paranoid ... got the electrician coming tomorrow to fix their screw ups, hopefully he won't need in the house much though... maybe I will call in tomorrow.
I'd hate to miss another bomb scare though... that took 2 hours out of my day. :)

I have serious trust issues as it is. I also REALLY value my privacy (my blinds are almost always closed in my home). All of the doors to my home stay locked at all times (unless someone is going through the door; otherwise, it's locked).
When I originally moved into this home back in '95, one of the movers stopped just outside of the truck, looked around the neighborhood and said: "You know, we never usually come up to this neighborhood - unless we're gonna steal something". Maybe he was joking, maybe he wasn't. Whatever the case, the guy was getting a good look at everything I owned. Luckily, I was just an E5 in the USAF with 2 young kids and didn't really own anything of value back then. The house was the most I could afford on my salary and that's where all of my $$ was going!
When I delivered pizza, people would invite me in all the time. I would always politely decline.
Staying out of their homes saves you from 2 possible bad scenarios:
(1) Your getting mugged
(2) Later facing an accusation that YOU stole something while in their home.

Sure, most all service workers are legit and just want to do their job without any trouble. But, do you want to take the chance that you've got the thieves of the lot in your home?
I keep an exceptionally close eye on them when they have to come into my home. I remove as much as possible that I own from their sight before they come in. I take them on the most direct route to what they've got to work on. Once they leave, I double check things like window locks, etc. Particularly in the bathroom.

you got to think OPSEC
so, the guy who comes over is good to go. but he goes back to the shop and says "man, ginsue has the largest gunsafe I have ever seen. He has a lot of gun magazines sitting on the coffe table, and I noticed he has a fully stocked reloading room, and he gave me a $20 tip, because I got the cable hooked up, he wanted to get it installed before the big game, and he is going to be out of town for a week at Disney land". no big deal right? wrong. he maybe overheard by some dirtbag who hears "ginsue has tons of guns, he reloads, so he probably has tons of FULLY AUTOMATIC Ars, Aks, and probably cash and gold in his safe. I should break in for meth money and guns, and he will never know it was me"

I pretty much personally know anyone who comes to my house for some kind of service since it's a small community. And most of those people will have free reign of the house as needed.
But if you're coming up my driveway and you're not in a UPS or FedEx truck or LE-marked car...I'd better damn sure recognize your vehicle or be expecting you. Except for a few close friends most people know NOT to come up my drive unannounced.
How are people supposed to announce they are coming if they don't know you? Send up a flare from the street when they turn off? :D

From what I've read from Bailey and looked at on his web site I'd say if you send up a flare he's probably going to grab his FAK and come to see if you need help. :)

i have a quarter mile long drive. and 2 locked gates. if you are invited you can call from the bottom of the drive and i will let you in. if you arent invited...leave... and dont ignore the " PRIVATE PROPERTY NO TRESPASSING KEEP OUT SIGN ". and climb the fence and starting walking up. that would be an invitation to get aerated.
i see most of what happens here anyway. we have a 3 mile long road with 6 houses on it. all on thier own 80-160 acres.

That sounds like a piece of heaven....
I always liked the signs:
"My German Shepherd can make it to the fence in 1.3 seconds."
"No Tresspassing. Voilators will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."

Guess i'm an optimist and think that the majority of people are good, however i still have locks on everything! Also, forget service people, how about your friends, or kids friends. My parents always told me "don't bring your friends in the house or show them your valuables, they will steal them". I always thought they were paranoid and of course "none of my friends ever stole anything", or at least until I saw a "friend" steal something at another friends house. That is crazy and gives you the worst knots in your stomach, not to mention you lose your trust of EVERYONE!
When I was a kid, several of the neighbors got robbed, it turned out some neighborhood kids were telling mommy and daddy what everyone else on the block had at their house! The parents were running a little theft ring, and this wasn't in some scumbag neighborhood either, I would consider my family as upper-middle class. I don't recall the specifics about the bust, because I was a kid, but I do recall it was shear accident that they were busted.
Of course I tell my kids the same, however they don't have a clue. So, i lock everything up.
Cheers,
Tim

+1, however it only takes 1 bad apple to spoil the bunch, i'm sure you can understand why people may watch you like a hawk. On the flip side, perhaps you can take pride when you leave a positive impression! Unfortunatly, it appears that crime pays, however I firmly believe that they will get what is coming to them some day as will you be rewarded.

Forgot to mention, while i'm watching visitors, I also make sure they notice my german shepard is watching them and comment on how unfreindly she is, just in case they want to tell all their friends what a great house i have.
Have had several neighbors tell me that I should acclamate my dog to other people and dogs, I promply explained that would defeat the purpose of having a dog.
Cheers,
Tim
Lol, I have a police reject boxer I got from the TX boxer rescue when I was there a few years ago. He is a butterball until I say the magic word and then he goes freaking ballistic with growling, barking, hackles standing up, posturing, etc. So when I have people over, I'll put Buddy behind the childgate or something and slip the word into casual conversation. The people always freak out when he gets started and they ask if they'll be ok. I say, "Oh you're fine... with me here. He's a little nuerotic. Tried to attack my mom once. I just wait for the day when someone tries to break in and I'm not here... poor bastards will be sausage. Good boy Buddy. want a treat?!" And they just look at me like I'm crazy! HAHAHAHAHAHA.
In all honesty, he is a wonderful dog and VERY well trained.
Wow I didn't realize this would strike up such good conversation!
The guy was very cool that did the blinds, I still pretty much followed him throughout the house to make sure nothing was taken, double checked when he left and all seems to be in order. good thing is he still has to come back to get one last blind put in that either he forgot at the warehouse or that wasn't ordered. So if I find anything missing I can have a talk with him about it!
My dream is to have a big long driveway, gates, hopefully over 50 acres along with a shooting range right in the back!

I usually make it a point to have a couple AK's or some such on the kitchen table being cleaned when they show up. That combined with the Rotties following them around the house and the Bullmastiff lying in front of the door keeps everyone in the right mindset. Oh, and they usually have to park next to the dark blue Crown Vic with the tinted windows, spotlights, push bar and all the antennas in the driveway.[Luck]
