The sad part is I have been an electrician 3 years longer than you've been alive...

Started in my current field 30 years ago. Before that I spent 4 years as a line wrench at a Chevy dealership.

I guess the good thing about being an "old Fart" is I have just over 4 years to go to retirement @ 56. Everything I have is paid for except the house (almost) and I will only lose about 10K per year in income.

I will say to all the 20somethings out there is I hope you are already putting away and planning. My plan changed a little when I turned 33 but the goal did not. ;)

How come you youngens are here on the computer instead of out chasin girls? Ask the ol farts(who appear to be about 20-25 yrs older) what they were doing when they were not chasin girls? When I was 20-30 the only things my friends and I were doing was chasin skirts, shootin/huntin/fishin, working on autos and drinking. I would have never had time to fool around talking on the net.

Like many here (it seems) us "old farts" have been dealing with computers before you guys were born.

In 81 I was taking the tapes to process requests

In 85 I bought my first computer and learned DOS

In 86 I learned UNIX and the SunOS

In 89 I built my first computer running Windows 2.0

Other techs I work with are just amazed what I can do with "DOS" today... glad I learned it well back in the day.

Dang, I'm surprised there's twice as many "old-farts" as there are folks my age. How did yall get so intrawebz savvy?

Been a computer geek by trade since 85, and that's after working towards (not finishing) an MIS degree in 83-84.

Started as a Computer Operator (tape ape) with Honeywell mainframes running GCOS3 and GCOS8 - command line stuff. Worked with Honeywell H6080's, DPS-6, DPS-90's, DPS-8000, etc and IBM-4341's. Played with Zenith Z-100 and Z-150 PC's which is where I learned MS-DOS.

Became a comm operator using old teletype systems (ASR-7) and (then) brand spanking new OCR systems.

Became a System Software Analyst on the OS/hardware listed above.

Eventually (93-95) moved into Unix/SunOS - also command line.

Moved away from Unix for 7 years while I led a web development shop and misc other activities.

Now, back to Unix and PC's/Windows Servers (XP, Vista, Server 2003, etc).

I've worked with Paper tape, punch cards, 9-track tapes, 10-disk platters arrays, 10" floppies, 8" floppies, 5.25" floppy, 3.5" floppies, CD-Rom, DVD, USB drives, etc.

You could say I've had a little experience with computers and the web. In fact, I used the old military ARPAnet before (er-hmm) Al Gore invented the Internet.

I'm with you 100%, but I was Active Duty USAF and worked on/with what I was told to work on/with. Used PSP, Java, JavaScript, etc on a Windows based network. I really do prefer UNIX to any OS out there. It's stable, versatile, powerful, and (in my opinion) easy to use.
