ACORN CEO: Tea Parties a 'Bowel Movement,' Future Will Be Worse Than Segregation (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/04/22/acorn-ceo-socialists-persecution-dwarf-segregation-tea-parties-racist/)

"Any group that says, 'I'm young, I'm Democratic, and I'm a socialist,' is all right with me. You know that's no light thing to do -- to actually say, I'm a socialist -- because you guys know right now we are living in a time which is going to dwarf the McCarthy era. It is going to dwarf the internment during World War II. We are right now in a time that is going to dwarf the era of Jim Crow and segregation," Lewis said."

"Any group that says... and I'm a socialist,' is all right with me.

$5 bets she doesn't even know what she's saying. There are many different "branches" of Socialism. However, there is a common definition such as: Socialism is defined as, “systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.”

Sounds ok in theory. The general idea using socialist theory is that everyone pays taxes and the government provides its citizens with the things that they need, not want. Here comes the red flags: French economist Frederic Bastiat, “The socialist state is the great fictitious entity by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else.” In other words, why would people want to work when they can't keep everything they've made? Eventually, who WILL work to pay for everyone else? Socialism is bad because it is 1. Condescending, 2. Inefficient, and 3. immoral.

On 1.) Socialism is bad because it is condescending - When people work and produce they have the means to buy what they wish. Not so with Socialism, you are only garunteed what you NEED. Basic food, shelter, and clothing. Your paycheck is merely a common means of exchange for people to trade goods and services. If you provide goods or services that few people value, you are paid less. Economics 101. The more that one produces the more means they have to purchase the productions of others. As people spend their earnings they generally fulfill their highest wants first.
So, how does socialism fit in to this? Pretend someone wishes to spend their earnings on food, clothing, shelter, music, and alcohol (from highest order to lowest). Under a socialist regime, this may be impossible. After taxes, the individual may only be able to afford food, clothing, and shelter – while being provided with government transportation, healthcare, and a public park (all of which our person may or may not use). Socialism takes away the liberty to decide how you wish to spend your money; it presupposes you are not smart enough to decide what you need. Your income was yours, now it is the government’s and it will provide for you what it thinks you need. Say bye-bye to the wants you cherished, like excess alcohol, fast cars, firearms, etc. They are not a NEED as the Socialist government sees it.

On 2.) Socialism is inefficient because it makes economic calculation impossible. With a central government owning all means of production and distribution there can be no competition, profits, losses, market prices, or even a market!! Profits, losses, and prices serve to guide scarce resources to their most highly valued means. The fact that socialism is inefficient, compared to free-market capitalism, is really the answer to an empirical question. Let's look at history: Nations such as the former USSR, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea are great examples. They were Socialist states, these nations were not communist as communism, by its own definition, has never existed.

On 3.) Socialism is bad because it is immoral. Back to Frederic Bastiat, “It is impossible to introduce into society a greater change and a greater evil than this: the conversion of the law into an instrument of plunder…. But how is this legal plunder to be identified? See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime.” This amounts to nothing more than compulsory servitude. Economist Walter Williams takes it a step further, “Can a moral case be made for taking the rightful property of one American and giving it to another to whom it does not belong? I think not. That's why socialism is evil. It uses evil means (coercion) to achieve what are seen as good ends (helping people). We might also note that an act that is inherently evil does not become moral simply because there's a majority consensus….. For the Christians among us, socialism and the welfare state must be seen as sinful. When God gave Moses the commandment "Thou shalt not steal", I'm sure He didn't mean thou shalt not steal unless there's a majority vote. And, I'm sure that if you asked God if it's okay just being a recipient of stolen property, He would deem that a sin as well.”

Anyone who thinks broadband in the US is the "best in the world" is on crack. I have tried three different methods, and can't get more than 3Mbps out of Pueblo West. WTF? DSL (business class, best speed), WiMax, and EVDO (cellular) systems all cap out at about the same speed. I use both DSL and EVDO to get reliable network connections. I can't have internet unavailable, it's how I work.

Also, text messages? You're paying the equivalent of about $1300 per megabyte.

There's lots of fundamentally wrong things with all infrastructure industries in the US. A lot of that is due to government regulation, and a lot of it is due to monopolies of various types. Hell, a lot of it has to do with monopolies created by government regulation.

But I would take anything the CEO of Verizon says with a grain of salt. This article you linked is his rebuttal to a previous piece about a study which shows we pay too much for too little compared to other countries.

Don't always make this knee jerk reaction that everything government does is wrong because they've done it.

Lol, I wish, I had to cut them three big checks earlier this month.

They work for me! If they were my employees, I'd fire them and hire people hungry to work. Isn't service supposed to get better in a recession?

The funniest thing about government is, the services I like the most; cost the least. Local emergency services, streets, water, schools.

Here is an awesome (huge) graph showing where the money goes:

That is exactly right, freedom of speech for the socialist, not for you unless you agree with the socialist.

I say this all the time, we the freedom loving, Constitution supporting Americans are in a real war to keep our Constitution.
Wake up America if you want to keep our Constitution!
Stop ignoring these people and start standing up to them, educate yourself and when your hear them spout this crap initiate and win the discussion.
Their tactics are exposed; they will call you names, make false accusations and even try to set you up to look the fool or like a hate monger.
They are not afraid of you; you need to start standing up to them.

But I know i'm preatching to the chior here, everyone on COAR15 is already doing this. Rock & Roll [M2]

That chart is a big leftist liberal propaganda LIE! It shows almost exclusively the discretionary budget. It barely shows the biggest budget area - the programs that are on automatic. Congress does not normally vote on over 65% of the budget. The way that the chart is set up perpetuates the lie that the discretionary spending that is one third of the budget is what is hurting us.

It's the whole budget that is hurting us.

Do you see the giant circle in the middle? "This is the discretionary budget." In the lower right, you see the total budget.

Reality has a liberal bias.
