The previous thread for build party's was over a year old, so I started a new one.

I am new to ak building and am interested in seeing if there are interested people in getting together to build some ak's.

Anyone interested?

I'm interested! I haven't done any, but have plenty of kits... [Tooth]

I don't have all the necessary tools, so I'm hoping there are those that would be interested in hosting. I'm at the riveting stage and have no rivet capability.

How much do you think it will cost. Like a ball park cost, if it is in my price range i will be in.

There is a group of Colorado AK builders at www.gunco.net (http://www.gunco.net) that I've met- that site is more geared towards building AKs than this site...

they've done 2 build parties since I met them a few months ago, so they're pretty active.. but they're in Littleton or last one was in Loveland.. I have considered hosting to get one down my way.. They've got all the tools- (spot welder, ak-builder jig, rivet tools, etc) but nice to have some less portable at the host's place- shop press, for example.. hosting at my place is good for testing, I live in unincorporated area on 47acres..

There's no charge for the build party, you're expected to bring all the parts you need... so get a kit, a flat (or a Nodak receiver), rivet kit, and a trigger group + all 922r compliance parts you need.. I've got 2 kits At the moment, but need to get flats & compliance parts.. as well as mags

I've got a torch for heat treating flats, head space guages and bolt cutters (no rivet jaw yet) and I can't host but i'd be down to help.

I've been to 3 or so partys already.

I've posted a request on gunco.net for a build party. I'll transfer any knowledge here if there are any active takers.

I'd be interested. I want to convert my Saiga 223 to an original AK configuration. I still need to order parts though. Been wanting to do this for a while but feel I don't have the knowledge or resources so this would be awesome.

I've got a buddy with the trigger guard tools and the receiver bending jig. He also has the front trunnion riveting tool (homemade out of bolt cutters). I also plug welded the rails instead of spot welding them. Worked great. Where will this build party be? I can probably secure the tools.

It seems like most people have the tools we just need a place to do it. someone with a garage is needed.

I've got the bending jig, trigger jig, rivet pliers, plinker jig and the know how.

Are you talking about your garage at your house? What happened to it? Your garage would be perfect because we could test fire it after were done.[Beer]

I've got a bending jig (bolt powered) and a couple of trunnion tools. Also got like six flats for a folding kit (1.2mm) I've only got two kits and the 922r compliance parts for them.

keep me in the loop!!!

Ok back from a good 10 day R&R with no contact from the world.
I can sponsor a build party this July 24th or 31st (rain date). I am looking at these days to accomodate brycom who lives in the neighborhood, and has those 2 saturdays free.
Hoopty is in (pm or e-m me regarding an ak parts kit) i have room for another 6 max people.
I have a 12T press, mig welder, and bandsaw, if needed. I do not have a spot welder for rails, rivet tools, or anything else needed to complete an AK. So thats where it stands.
I would like to kick off by 9am. We can get food delivered from the good places to eat in town or who knows.
DISCLAIMER::
This is a get together for like minded gun owners to build an AK for their own personal use.

THIS IS NOT a party for those who are assembling a rifle for sale and or profit.
ALL FIREARM LAWS will be observed based on the honor system. there will be no one looking over your shoulder. I do not want to hear any talk about making anything a questionable, select fire item just because it is that easy (if you believe the internet and or antigunners) I expect the same courtesy here as i or anyone would do at your place.
YMMV

I would love to come by and watch if that would be ok. I have been wanting to build one but don't know what parts to buy yet.

Well I'll be there along with another guy that has a beautiful german kit.

I have flat bending jig, front rivet tool, plinker jig for rear trunnion, trigger gaurd jig, oxy acetalyne torch for heat treating, no-go headspace gauge and the "know how" for these tools.

We will need a spot welder for reciever rails(or we can use jim's mig welder) and any other trunnion/barrel/make building easier tool you may have.

Best to buy the flats with the pre-bent top rails or even better a Nodak spud receiver.

If anyone has any questions on what they will need to build one let me know.

I would be interested in getting more info.

I have been looking at flats at www.ak-builder.com (http://www.ak-builder.com). Is there a better place to buy them?

thanks!

edit: I have a Miller MIG welder and have been wanting to get a spot welder.

Would this one from Harbor Freight work?

Yes that one will work. We will have to grind/modify the tongs in order for it to fit in the receiver. Make sure you get the 120 volt version also.

Ak-builder makes excellent flats. They are more expensive than the tapco flats but lots of people think the akbuilder flats are better quality. Let me know if your going to buy from ak builder because I need one of their yugo flats and I may piggy back on your order if thats OK?

I made an official build party thread here: http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?p=217244#post217244

Also I have tooling for building the m14/m1 garand. If someone wants to build one of those then sound off and we can figure what parts you will need.

Will do. AK Builder also has the tongs that fit the Harbor Freight welder.

So what all do I need to order? Which flat would you suggest. Right now I have Saiga AK's so I am open to others.

Jim, I'm in with bryjcom, as a helper if needed. And instead of spot welding, I plug welded the rails with very good results. Just need a grinder with a sanding wheel to get it smooth after welding.

I would think it would be better to use very fine sand paper. It we can take a dremmel to the large welds then smooth them flush with the sandpaper.

I've been emailing with Brycom. I would like to also attend. I don't think I have enough posts to send private messages, but I'll try.

Jim and Bryan,
If you want to use my 110v spot welder you are welcome to it. We will have to figure out a way for you to get it tonight or tomorrow morning. The tongs will need to be modded still, it's still stock form. But, it's better than someone going and buying one....
I posted over on the other one and changed this...... ADD today I guess. DOOOOH

Hey guys, I could help noticing this thread even though the party already happened. I've noticed most of you are in my neck of the woods (I live in way west greeley/south of windsor) anyway I have all the needed ak tooling except a bending jig (a friend of mine that has a machine shop in ftc made a copy of ak builders new jig so I use that) also I have a modified spot welder from hf, its the 220 model and don't be afraid to get that one, it works like a dream and I haven't had a burn though problem and its welded about 20 sets of rails in. I'm one of the colorado builders from gunco that 68charger mentioned months ago

I'd love to join you guys for your next build party if I could as I'm always working on ak projects (near future I will build a 7.62x25 blowback ak) or if anyone is looking to build and there isn't a bp going on let me know, I love building and I wouldn't mind helpin a guy out. Anyways I saw someone mention m14 tools..... If anyone wants I have a line on m14 80% receivers ;)

If the facility you're using is big enough would you all mind if Bigmat and I tag along? Don't have the. Stuff yet to build but we'd love to learn and then build a couple at the next party.

There is another forum topic about the 80-100% receivers that people have been discussing a build party. You'll need to get with Jim as it is his place.
