I am wanting to get myself a decent woods carry gun, and i cant make up my mind. I have narrowed it down between the G20 and the S&W 60 .357 5" model. I need somthing that is.....resiliant(sp). Ive heard that Glock is very sturdy, as in drop it in the mud and pick it up and fire. The .357, well its just cool. Both rounds will easily take down any 2 or 4 legged predator in colorado. Weight is alsoa consideration. Im starting to lean towards the G20. Thoughts? Would you prefer a 10mm or a .357 mag in the rockies?

It will most likely be getting wet and dirty

Even though I am not a Glock fan, of the two, I would go with the Glock.
They are reliable in adverse conditions, acceptably accurate and with lots of capacity. Add'l mags are big and easy to find vs. revolver speed loaders or loose rounds. 10mm is a great round.

Revolvers are prone to problems with dirt and mud. The revolver with scratch more easily than the Glock.

If You like the 10mm class why not just get a glock in 45 acp?

You could carry a Desert Eagle in .357 mag or .44 mag. Then you have the mag ammo with the ease of magazines.

S&W aluminum (scandium) framed .357. It's light, rust resistant, and...it's light. Really nice to carry. Don't try the .44mag version though, it's the single worst recoiling handgun I've ever fired.

Reloading is the way to go with the 10 anyway. That way you can reach it's full potential. With the right loads, shy of the biggest bears, I'm sure it would dissuade just about anything in the woods.

Okay, close your eyes.

You're walking through the woods.
You hear a noise.
You look up and see this.
Your hand goes to your belt to grab your firearm, just in case.
You look down, what are you holding in your hand?

And that is your answer.

Glock 20 is what I carry in the woods. Love it, and never had any problems with it. If 16 rounds of 10mm wont put it down God has decided it's your time.

My pack gun for the woods is a Ruger Redhawk in 45 LC w/325 gr Cast Performance LFN bullets.

I prefer a revolver over a semi in this environment but that may just me rationalizing another firearm.

Either way, something is better than nothing.

Thanks for the input guys. Im gonna stay away from the glock, I've got little hands[Rant1]. Still may get a S&W 4" 7 round .357 mag.

@marine, Why do you prefer a revolver? Cowboy, why an auto?
Do any of you know about the colt double eagle 10mm or the EAA witness 10mm? Ive been able to find mixed reviews on both. I love the looks of the witness. I have benn lusting after a 1911 style pistol.

I have owned Double Eagle 10mm s.
They have good SA and DA trigger pulls. Accurate and reliable guns.
They will rattle like a lot of Colts do.
A bit heavier than a 1911 type.
Good guns, just not popular.

There IS another company out there that makes a compact 10mm besides Glock, I just don't remember who it is.

I THINK it is the same company that came out with the original 10mm that everyone loved so much. The one with the sights that are integrated into the slide. They made a brand new batch of them in the last few years, to include a compact version.

I don't necessarily prefer an auto, just what I have chosen. I've never had any cycling or feeding issues with the Glock. It has been mud covered and soaked along with me, and still goes bang in those conditions. It's been out in -10 to -20 degree weather for days with me and still worked perfectly. The main reason is the ability to carry 16 powerful rounds, and it hasn't failed me yet.

I also carry a .357 Ruger Vaquero from time to time, and like that as well. But I only get 6 shots with that, and would take a while to reload.

I've shot and carried a Colt Delta Elite 10mm and liked it, but it wasn't as reliable in the conditions the Glock held up to.

If I'm not hunting and I am in the woods for camping or backpacking I also carry a Marlin 1895 Guide gun instead of my .300 win mag. If 350 gr 45-70 +P+ can't handle it I don't think 10mm will.

I believe that most of the time a pistol is for fighting your way to a rifle, but in the woods sometimes smaller is better for weight reasons.

good gun, but with the scandium frame you have to check your ammo you use to make sure the bullets aren't walking their way out of the casings.

You know, you can always combine your jones for a 1911 and the 10mm round--the Delta Elite. Only carries 8+1 or 9+1 compared with 16 or whatever in the G20, but is plenty accurate and a nice platform. If you have small hands, you may want to check out the G20SF. It feels a lot better to me than the regular G20. Lastly, while rolling your own is great, it's tough to beat the performance of Double Tap or Buffalo Bore heavy 200g or 220g loads for woods defense. I'd go with the 200g hard cast DT loads myself.

I have been reluctant to respond to these, I don't like to shove my opinion on other people. But if your going to spend the money here's my take on a Glock 20 in "40 mag" (that's what I call a 10mm so people understand what it is) vs 357 mag. You have a gun that shoots a round (10mm) that virtually by all published ballistics is shown to be superior to 357 mag. I know everybody will tell you that they can hand load their 357, 45, 38, 9mm, 22 you name it to be better, stronger, faster. That is why I say just go to every site you can find that has actually fired the rounds in question and has printed comparison ballistics. Look at Double Tap they have ballistics that tell it all. The other thing with a G20 you can have four guns with Glock quality for just $110.00 each. 10mm is standard but with just a drop in barrel from Lone Wolf you get a 40 S&W, 357 Sig and 9 x25 Dillon and you don't even need a different magazine with any of them they all fit in the standard 10mm mag. The 9 x 25 Dillon is running a 357 cal slug at speeds up to 2000 fps out of a 6" Glock barrel, that is in the rifle neighborhood. And now you have 15 rounds in every mag of pure hell for any thing you can hit. When you go to the range you just drop in the 40 S&W barrel and you can practice with your gun for dirt cheap. My mountain gun is a Glock 29 with the 10mm barrel, its lighter that my Python by a long shot, and it packs10 rounds of firepower in each mag. Take my Glock 30 in 45 ACP it is great defense gun that goes through clothes and human skin with power to spare, but when I want to go through thick fur and leather skin or a thick skull with power to spare for defense in the back country it's 10mm or 9x25 Dillon.

Why not a good ol' 44 mag? There are reliable semi-auto platforms and it will take down anything in CO.

If you are worried about the frame being too big, get a G20SF! The grip is significantly smaller than the regular G20. Ammo really isn't that hard to find if you know where to go. Yes, it will be difficult to find in stores but hell, so is most everything else right now too. Buy online from Double Tap if you want a heavy hitting 10mm round from the factory. They ALWAYS have ammo in stock. Its tough to beat the reliability and not to mention 15+1 without having to reload. There is no comparison between the two IMO.

Desert Eagle is the only one I can think of. What are some other semi-autos that shoot 44 mag?

I wasn't sticking with semi-autos. I was just saying that for a woods gun, a good ol' 44 mag would be just fine. Ammo is readily available and all that jazz. 44 mag should be able to take care of anything in our neck of the woods.

I've went through the same thing. I've carried shortened Blackhawks, redhawks, 44's, 454's, T/c stuff, Desert Eagles, light rifles/shotguns. Best I've been happy with is the Glock 20sf. Only complaint is it is still a handful for normal size hands. I chose it over a Delta because I'd hate to subject a nice gun to what all I get into in the outdoors. IMO, a Glock is a tool.......kinda like a persuasive hammer. [Tooth]
