Magpies are a nuisance and I need to get rid of some.
I live in a residential area next to the national forest, so, can't use a 22.

I need some kind of pellet pistol, but don't know anything about them.
One requirement, in the words of the great hunter Elmer Fudd, it must be
Vewy, Vewy Quiet.

Any suggestions?

What about snake/bird shot for your 22.

magpies are a federally protected bird, there was a mayor or somebody prosecuted for shooting magpies a few years back. and if you are in a residential area that prohibits shooting a 22, it probably prohibits pellet guns and slingshots too. most towns and cities prohibit projectiles of any kind.
i personally like magpies, i put carcasses out for coyote bait and get lots of magpies. they dont make noise around my house, maybe somebody shot all the noisy ones.

Magpies are smart. With a few gone the rest will stay away.
This must fall under the make my day law - yard invaders threatening our well being???

Can you throw rocks at them? Or get a cat?

I shoot protected birds all the time (woodpeckers) with an airsoft rifle. It doesn't hurt them much but they know it hurts a little to peck on our house. It's funny to watch. Since they are territorial the same birds are here year after year. They will peck on all of our neighbors houses but won't touch ours :)

It would be a real tough checken. They are tough little birds.

Maybe an extra-powerful Super Soaker squirtgun? Filled with something unpleasant, like ammonia?

Rocks scare them off for maybe ten seconds. Ineffective.
Cannot do cats they are allergic to me. Besides we have mountain lion, bob cats and coyotes in the neighborhood.
Doesn't worry the Magpies at all.

Surely, someone has some insight to a pistol pellet gun?

Possibly this? http://gamowhisper.com/

I seen one on RMGO for sale.

Disclaimer: I would never discharge any pellet rifle, sling shot, bow or real firearm in city limits at protected wildlife.

If you could dress 'em up like prairie dogs, I'm sure you could get a few fellers over willing to help take 'em out.

If you really want to go with a pellet gun...go all the way!

Seriously, I don't know about magpies. But our woodpeckers don't like a supersoaker with chili powder and old cheap perfume. We eventually just put bird houses over the holes in the house.

maybe one of those fake owls on the roof? those are supposed to scare away birds, no?

Which is why I'm not offering any suggestions.

Perhaps, like with me, their sense of self-preservation is stronger.

When I was a kid there was a bounty on them. They kill sheep by pecking out their eyes and going for the brain. If you took a right wing in to the sheriff they would give you money for them.

Magpies are not good birds. They will raid and destroy (read: eat the offspring) the nests of other NATIVE species, and the only reason you are not seeing a **** ton of them right now is they got decimated by West Nile like no other species of bird in America. They are highly, highly intelligent, but they are a non native, destructive species that will push out virtually all other birds in the area. Personally, I'm glad to have not seen many for a couple years. Prior to West Nile the only freaking bird we had here was black and white. It should NOT be protected, damn progressives. I swear some of them seek to destroy the "environment" more than a guy wanting to do a nuke test in the Amazon, except they do it with a chip on their shoulder.

--note : this post is not legal advice ;p
Lets pretend a friend of mine said kill the damn things. Just don't let anyone see you....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magpie

I've seen them chowing down on a hummingbirds nest before, and a few others. Guess the libs don't care about it as long as they don't have to see a person kill a "poor littl birdy".

That article lends doubt to whether the American/Korean/Eurasia magpies are the same species...

these two articles also state that the black billed magpie is native to North America and Canada...

http://myfwc.com/WILDLIFEHABITATs/Nonnative_AmericanMagpie.htm

http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-billed_Magpie/lifehistory

apparently since they are not native to the east coast of the United States Florida is having problems with them now...
