I bet that spiked your blood pressure a few points, eh?
Left Hand is closed to shooting this Saturday May 8th 2010, for the annual clean up sponsored by the Trail Ridge Runners 4x4 club. There is always a good turnout from the club and a few of us regular shooters there to help out. The Forest Service usually has Ranger Rasmussen and a few of his posse there to make a showing. Might be a good chance to get the lowdown on the North Site closure. The club usually has hot dogs and stuff for chow at noon for those participating in the clean up. Kudos to the club for policing another activities mess... clean up starts at 8 am

Me too, right after my comment on North Range.
After My experiance with that 4-5 years ago,, And I say this knowing they all aren't deserving, and a few of you guys may be members, If one of them was on fire, I would not cross the road to piss on them..
Another guy and I from this board showed up to help. The guy in charge sent us down the road a bit, to clean up that part.Said He'd send 6-7 guys down in a hour or two to help. Well, the only guy that showed up was somebody that was planning to shoot, He ended up staying and helping. There were about 4-5 cars that pulled up then left, when they found out it was closed.
Cleaned up shotgun shells that covered an area about 200 feet long, 6 feet wide and ankle deep..That and the rest of the trash, took us from about 8:30 until 2:30 to get it cleaned and loaded up..
Never saw anybody from the 4 wheel club ever show up.. The best part was around 11:30 on, sounded like they cranked up the 4 wheelers and started running the hills.. was like that the rest of the time we were there.
I had never been to LHC before, and I have never been back.

I hate lefthand... to many dangerous idiots.
Someone is going to get shot there, then they will shut it down for good.
I don't want that to happen, but it will.
Almost everyone there has no firearm safety and they leave trash everywhere.

As the shooting restrictions in Lefthand Canyon were a bit nebulous in my mind, I called the Boulder Ranger District yesterday to find out exactly what the situation is regarding target shooting in the area.
I was told the "Slot Canyon" -- aka the old Lefthand Canyon shooting area -- is and will remain closed as marked. The ranger I spoke with yesterday also told me the Forest outside the closure area is open to shooting, provided the standard USFS regulations and policies are followed.
It may sound like a "duh" statement, given the generally open status of NF lands to target shooting, but I felt it was worth the phone call to get clarification. I will be heading up there one of these days soon to scout out a new shooting location in the canyon (as I live fairly close and don't feel like driving out to the Grasslands). Hopefully we can find a safe, clean area to shoot in without venturing too far.
I never went shooting in the Slot Canyon area when it was open. Times we drove past it to 4-wheel into the area turned me off too much; "homeys" up practicing their sideways firearms proficiency, rednecks blasting appliances into the Maytag afterlife, and more trash than a reasonable shooter could ever hope to be OK with kept us out and going up to Allenspark.
If someone can give/show me the map of where in Left Hand Canyon we can shoot now would be greatly appreciated.
I only know the old left hand area.
Just want to shoot 50rnds on my new 1911 to see how it shoots with my left hand at Left Hand. :D (right wrist injury).

I would be really interested to find out also... Thanks.
I was near Longmont and Boulder area last week. Just went there to see it was open.
It is closed.

Don't waste your time Sung believe me, there are better places to shoot.

I agree.
Went there about twice (2006), and it was crowded.
There is no seize fire, so I just aim at dirts and other big chunks of stuff.
Picking up brass? Forget it.
It would be lucky just to sqeeze behind the shooters and leave the area.
St Vrain (north site) was my favorite area when I lived in Longmont.

I've been there many times and can't recall the exact the way. Next time I will write down the directions and post them.
The first time I went there it was spiritual. No crap. I just got into guns and couldn't believe you could shoot in the mountains without anyone watching over your shoulder telling what you can't do. Boy I had fun.
It also looked like those dump villages in China with all the crap everywhere.
I have never experienced anything like it, and for that I will always think fondly of it.

You're 100% right.
I used to love going up to the slot canyon on my lunch hour since I work in Boulder. During those times there wouldn't be many other people up there if anyone at all. It was horrible on the weekends though, and the trash was just ridiculous.
I've heard of this other Lefthand shooting spot but don't know where exactly it is. I've been wanting to take my son out to try out the shotgun he got for his b-day this spring but don't know of any other places to go that I don't have to make a day trip out of.
