Anyone else read about this story?

I ran some data through a ballistic program and the results make me question the probability of making 2 kill shots at 2700 yards.
Any thoughts all you long range shooters?

I'm no long range expert... but two FRH's at that distance?.... Not sure I believe it.
Legit/confirmed kills?
No mention of rifle/bullet, etc... Don't know what to think...
If so, amazing/great/exceptional/etc job by the team.

also heard this today... don't know the probability though.

The FOX news story stated that it took "almost 3 seconds" for the round to hit.
Given: .338 LM, 250 gr SMK, at 3000 fps muzzle velosity.
It would take almost 6 seconds to reach 2700 yards.

was it a .338 or a .50?

British issued AI L115A3 in .338 LM
Also, nice of them to publish his name, home town and number of children.
Makes me think the story is BS.

that makes it less probable in my book... but what do I know...[Tooth]
was it a .338 or a .50?
338 Lapua using a Lapua 250gn Scenar Lockbase bullet.
The media gets a lot of stuff wrong.
But the Brits do know how to drive rifles.

Hoser, is that issued ammo?
If so, I'll have to re-run my calculations.

shit you guys don't know anything about ballistics, i took down two prairie dogs yesterday at 2.87 kilometers with my ruger 10/22 and a simmons 3-9x40 scope I bought at wal-mart. no-name brand rings were used and it was federal 550 bulk pack ammo.
oh, and they were headshots, and when I pushed the safety over, yes, I did say "SAFETY OFF" quite loudly
I kept hearing about this recently, and thought it was the old record set by the Canadian. I thought that one was also 1.5 miles. Maybe it was only 1.5 Kilometers. ;)

I am not questioning the skills of the shooter.
I was looking at the physics and probability of making a 2700 yard shot.

well I did that with my Sig mosquito and iron sights... so HA!

He's British, and he probably lives in London. If the Taliban go after him they'll be mugged, happy slapped and stabbed by a bunch of 15 year olds in about half an hour and it will be on youtube half an hour after that :D

Question - is there a laser range finder that can measure that distance with less than a 5 yard error?

if anyone has one that can I'm sure it's the military!

Using my previous data (250gr SMK) the danger area for that shot at 2700 yards is only about 10 yards for a 1/2 human torso shot.

Another point.
The rounds would have gone subsonic around 2000 yards.
I can remember making 900+ yard shots on an old VW bus with a 10/22. As I recall, we were shooting downhill about 75 feet to the target, and we had to aim about 6-7 busses high......[LOL]
Hit percentage was maybe 30% after we got the range, but those 50 grain bullets still had enough oomph to knock holes in the rusty parts... [Tooth]

Sissy! I do that with a home made sling shot!

Now that's funny!

this one is +/- 5 yds and accureate to 10K m on a stationary hard target, designates and ranges moving targets to 5K m. A bit heavy, but syill carried by FO/TAC-P teams for designating guided munitions.

I want one!
not that it would improve my shooting... but I would look Tacti-cool as fuck when I missed!
