The Somali pirates who were captured in an assault operation after hijacking a Russian tanker near the Gulf of Aden and then released by Russian military officials have not reached the coast and have apparently perished, a top-ranking source in Russia's Defense Ministry told journalists on Tuesday.
Russia's Moscow University tanker was hijacked last week near the Gulf of Aden. Ten pirates were captured and one was killed in the assault operation.
The captured pirates were initially to be sent to Moscow for prosecution, but Russian military officials then made the decision to release them, citing the absence of a legal base to carry out prosecution procedures against pirates.
The pirate's boat reportedly disappeared from radars an hour after they had been released by the Russian military.

You cannot argue with their brute responses!
Russia has been known for dealing with sometimes excessive force to terrorists. And not only with Chechen rebels. For example, in September 1985 when four Russian diplomats were kidnapped in Beirut by Hezbollah, the then USSR responded in kind by first abducting a family member of an Hezbollah leader and then killing him very very gruesomely. The hostages were given back right away and Russia was never targeted in Lebanon again. Will Russia do the same today?

Russian #1: "Men, just got word from Moscow. We have to release them. We don't have a legal basis to prosecute them."
Russian #2: "I'll be right back."
15 minutes later
Russian #2: "Ok, you can cut them loose now."

Nope. A little mixture of RDX stabilized with some copolymers placed in the proper location and combined with a blasting cap and a timer.

I dont think the Russians would ever thought that far... they probably let them go and at about 100 yrd or so, they run a small arms target drill. :D

Any SOF unit commander would understand the implications of leaving evidence, and so would his superiors relaying the orders to him. The Spetz are one of the best. They sunk that POS ship well far out of range of anything they were carrying.... Those waters have massive current, deep enough to make diving for the wreck very costly and difficult, and are filled with nasty critters.

Kuznetsov appeared to echo those concerns when asked why the pirates who seized the tanker were released.
"Why should we feed some pirates?" he said.
"Perhaps we should get back to the idea of establishing an international court and other legal tools" to prosecute pirates, he said. "Until then, we'll have to do what our forefathers did when they met the pirates."

I always thought we've been way too nice to terrorists and pirates.
They should be interrogated to find out where they make berth, then those locations should be used as target practice by the navy.
