Colorado's Community Colleges lift carry ban

Yesterday (5/10/10) the Colorado Community College System instructed Colorado's Community Colleges to allow permit holders to carry on campus.

This applies to all taxpayer funded community colleges in the system. RMGO is working on publishing a list, but expect this directive to take some time to filter down to bureaucrats who, frankly, would rather deny you the ability to carry on their (actually our) campuses.

A special thanks to the good and diligent work of Attorney Jim Manley at Mountain States Legal Foundation (http://m2.politicalinfomail.com/fs/d:l/y7o04ww2f651a3/yu21nv4p9faa18/2). Jim serves as Colorado State Director for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, and is the lead attorney on the CU case (which is facing a deadline this week on that case). Jim also wrote the Amicus Brief Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR) filed on the McDonald case.

Mountain States Legal Foundation is working with RMGO and NAGR on some other issues, which we'll alert you about later.

But, the ball is rolling, and right now, we're on the winning side.

Application
This procedure applies to the state system community colleges
Basis
Board policy states that no person may have on his or her person any unauthorized
firearm, ammunition, explosive device, or illegal weapon on campus or any facility used
by a college.
Procedure
Persons authorized to carry firearms and other equipment defined in the policy are:
1. Those persons conducting and participating in an approved program of
instruction in the college's curriculum which requires access to such equipment
as an integral part of the instructional program;
2. Certified Peace Officers;
3. Those persons who have been issued a valid permit to carry a concealed
handgun in accordance with Colorado’s Concealed Carry Act, C.R.S. § 18-12-
201, et seq. and who are acting in compliance with the requirements of that Act;
and
4. Those persons granted permission at the discretion of the College President for
specific purposes from time to time.
Pursuant to the policy, College Presidents are responsible for developing procedures
and regulations pertaining to the use of firearms as a part of a program of instruction.

Yes. Now the private colleges...
Does CTU still prohibit CCW?

I have no problem with private colleges setting whatever policies they choose concerning weapons, as long as they follow the law in that respect. It would be hypocritical for me to expect them to give up their right to control the activities on their private property, to allow me to exercise my rights. Of course, I always have the right to take my business elsewhere if the policies in place offend me.

Yeah private colleges are a whole other animal. However, fogger hit it on the head, if you are paying that much for school I'm sure you can take your business to a campus where you agree with the admin's policies.
