It is a shoe for people interested in barefoot running, but haven't quite toughened their foot skin to do so all the time. Not just a fashion statement like those toe socks.

Have any of you guys used them? I had read a review on them and wanted to check them out

I haven't yet. They were always too expensive for me, so I just run barefoot on my treadmill (less rocks and glass).

I have a few friends that have them and love them. They did say that you have to give yourself a few weeks to get used to them and get past the sore, unused muscles.

Maybe I'm just clumsy, but isn't one of the purposes of footwear to offer some protection against inadvertent contact with solid and/or sharp objects?

Yes, but running bare foot is better for your body. Much less impact on all your joints. With the way that shoes are made, you are basically forced to heel strike in order to utilize the areas where the support and comfort are built into the shoe. Just telling someone that running barefoot is less impact often doesn't come across very well because people tend to imagine running barefoot the same way that they would in shoes. That would be a disaster and very painful.

If anyone has access to a treadmill, I encourage you to try a short jog barefoot (you'll get blisters after about 1/4 mile), and you'll automatically adjust your stride to land on the balls of your feet. It kind of feels like you are prancing at first, but it's pretty natural and comfortable.

I have them and wear them for weight-lifting, crossfit, and running.

Stuart talked about the advantages in running...

It also provides huge advantages in weightlifting.

Standard shoes often have alot of "cushion" in the sole.

This cushion creates an unstable base for your lifts.

Alot of serious lifters lift barefoot to give themselves a solid contact between their body and the floor.

EDIT: To answer a previous question, the bottom of the five-fingers are very tough. They will protect your foot from sharp objects, and yes, even dog shit.
Vibram five-fingers came out, and now you can go "barefoot" in any gym .

They're a great tool, and I would suggest anyone seriously interested in fitness atleast give them a try.

I've wanted a pair, but couldn't justify the cost. There are other shoes that look less funky if people are put off by looks. Nike has some shoe, it basically looks like the shell of a shoe because it is so thin.

I've got a pair of original Fivefingers I picked up pretty cheaply at TravelCountry.com, which seems to be the only place that ever has them on sale (doesn't look like they have anything going on right now, though).

I will say that you should be very careful about measuring your foot size, if you don't get them in-store. There's just not much tolerance.

Running with the FiveFingers is an eye-opening experience. I walk around the house barefoot, but it's always amazing to think back to how my feet automatically adapted to running on the balls, heels not even touching. Very very dynamic, compared to running with shoes - your toes stretch out slightly as you come in for impact, you start feeling the spring in your foot as it tenses up, and can recycle the energy forward. It does take about a week or two for your foot and leg muscles to restrengthen properly, so take it easy the first couple trips out. You will become incredibly fast with these. For me, it was easy to keep going, because I don't get shin splints when running near-barefoot. A friend of mine has plantar fasciitis, and the fivefingers are the only way he can recreationally run.

The sole is... well, Vibram, so it's pretty durable, and will keep dogshit off your feet. I've also run over small glass pieces with no ill consequence.

If you want the minimally-cushioned approach, aquasocks are pretty cheap & popular.

Yeah; what he said!

Agreed.

BTW: What is all of this talk about "running"? Someone chasing you?

Just 'cuz you post on AR15 forums doesn't mean you gotta look like it.

I've got a low arch and require more arch support, only while running in shoes though. It's different without. Everyone pay attention to how you walk around your house barefoot tonight. When I'm barefoot, I generally land on the balls of my feet, while my baby and fiance sound like they're stomping around the house because they heel strike.

They look so funny [ROFL1], well anything that is like a glove for your feet cracks me up [ROFL3] everytime I see them.

Cool product though, looks really good for water shoes as well as running. I would have to be carefull not to look down while I was wearing them or I would crack myself up again.

I have a buddy that invites me over for parties and there are always a bunch of running people there. One girl has shown up wearing those shoes the last two times. They do look funny. I'd love a pair, but I doubt I'd wear them to a barbeque; unless they turned out to be the best thing ever or something.
