This is along the line of the story yesterday about those who walk on house payments. It seems like a big push is being made to make the borrower the victim. Notice again that multiple generations in the same family doing the same thing.
"She recently received a raise and now makes $22 an hour working for a photographer. It's the highest salary she's earned since graduating with an interdisciplinary degree in religious and women's studies."

I agree that the loan companies or parents or school officials should at least say "Hey you know you aren't gonna make shit with this degree choice right?" but beyond that tough luck. You choose to go to an expensive school on all loans? maybe you're too stupid to be in college in the first place.

I went to CU at Denver and was fortunate enough that my parents were able to pay for my school. I graduated with a Bachelors in Economics and $0 debt. My school was about an average of $3,000 a year. CU Boulder is about $12,000 a year and DU (Denver University) is about $30,000 a year. I'm not at all ashamed to have gone to a school that shared campus with community colleges.
I know that a lot of girls pay a boat load of money to go through Bel Ray Vet tech college (where everyone is dumb and just does coke the whole time) then can't make enough money as a vet tech to even pay for the cost of the school.

So she borrowed $100,000 to find out that women make less than $.80 on the dollar of what a man makes? Ironic.

Typically, coming into the military with a Bachelor's degree gets you the title of Lieutenant, or sometimes even Captain.
Having a Master's or Doctorate in music in the USAF gets you a different title: Airman. That's not the generic title like marine, sailor, or soldier, but your rank (actually, you'd typically start as an Airman First Class).
Unless you'd in the right place at the right time, or have some very special and amazing talent, some degrees just aren't going to get you into anything lucrative.
While I think it's great if you can work in a career field that you really enjoy and that you spent studying for in college, it won't always put a roof over your head and bread on the table.
I know we have some folks here who are struggling to pay off those same types of debts. I commend you for this and hope that, some day, you'll actually get into an employment position that rewards you for your efforts.
Of course, then you'll be looking to get a mortgage to buy a house. Just what you'll want; more debt!

Eh, it's my fault. I'm not motivated to lose "enough" weight (though don't get me wrong, I AM working out) to meet the military requirements even though I've "won" several auditions for some pretty prestigious military groups (like Pershings Own, The Presidents Own, and the USAF Falconaires to name a few). Also, I really don't want to move/live in a big city... and if you know anything about music, that's where I'd have to be. Chicago, Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, etc. However, I'm perfectly content teaching a public/private highschool in some po'dunk town somewhere... it'll just take a little time finding that job.
In the meantime, I have a job outside of my field. It may not pay great, BUT I'm not getting any more behind in bills and I have a roof over my head and bread (sometimes that's it! HAHA) on the table. So for now, I'm winning.

The system is set up to get you in debt and keep you there.
Look at public education, very little time spent on reading, writing and math. The basic skills needed to do anything. Without knowing what your doing how are you ever going to get ahead? Kids are not even taught to think for themselves.

How many kids do you know who actually WANT an education? At best, most kids just want to get good grades. If that means getting a rote education just so that they pass, so be it.
Now, if I were trying to change how the next generation thinks, I'd start with removing their skills at thinking for themselves, teach them to tow the line, teach them re-writes to our own history [particularly anything that depicts the populace upraising against the .gov]. I would reduce their education in the 3 [R's Reading/'Riting/Rythmatic] -- All so that they become more and more dependent on others - especially the government.
Once you get enough of this generation thinking the way you want (there will be residual brain-washing in the simple minds of other generations too), you can begin to exert your control. Take over more and more of the things that people used to do for themselves. Extend your reach into areas which used to be considered taboo for the government. Villianize anything that stands in your way.

I don't entirely agree with this part in respect to higher education as a whole. It's people, especially (it seems) parents, with this attitude that their children MUST go to a university straight out of high school. And an out of state U is better than an in state one.
Of course this is where the system is set up to work the debt thing - I was accepted to a gaggle of out of state schools but couldn't get into a single in-state university. So this is where the parents need to pull their heads out for a couple of years, send your "I'm going for Women's Studies" little brat to a state college and make them work in the evening to pay for it if they aren't pulling at least an arbitrary high GPA.
That's what my folks did and that's how I paid for my own science degree while establishing a career.
Fucking Religous and Womens studies... I'm afraid you and I are going to end up eating that $100k.

I really don't need to get this wound up right before bed.
I started working for a living right out of high school, and 26 years later, I MIGHT be ready to appreciate a college degree program. I was fortunate enough to grow up in an environment that fostered learning as a skill. I came to the conclusion after my senior year that I could essentially teach myself most of what I needed to know by reading and reasoning, and thus saved my parents thousands of dollars. Now I have a decent grounding in self taught math (through basic calculus), I feel reasonably fluent in the English language, and I have a working understanding of engineering. Maybe I'm ready to go back to school, but it won't be paid for with loans, as I also have a pretty comprehensive understanding of economics. [LOL]

Actually I went through basic in "beat and blow" flight, and they were filling up the ranks of AF Band at the time. Half my flight ended up with higher ranks than my TI when they walked out, the lowest was SSgt, many were TSgt, or higher.
Maybe a masters in music appreciation is useless, well, because it is... actual musicians do much better.
