View Full Version : Verify School Grounds vs Public Property

Here is my problem/question:
I live near a school. I know CCW is not allowed on said property. The school property is also next to a City Park. There is no way to tell who's land is what. All open space between ball fields and park. I'd like to know where the lines are and if the city/county would make any effort to make the areas known. Posts, fences, signs etc.
Doubt anyone is going to foot the bill for this, but if someone could point to a map and say... here and here... etc.
Online assessors office map doesn't really give a good indication.
Whom and where should I ask about it? County? City? Pretty sure someone has a clue already, because there have been other criminal incidents that would require them to say "this happened on school grounds, or this didn't" when filing reports and such...
Thoughts?
Easiest thing would be go to the Utilities mapping dept and ask to see a parcel plot of the park or the school. If they have questions or ask about what, just tell them "site planning/R&D". That will give you definite areas of what belongs to who....
As far as getting the city to put up signs... good luck with that.
I actually have a similar question. When I'm walking down the street and a school is on the same street, do I need to cross the street and walk on the opposite sidewalk?
No, sidewalk by a major street is considered part of easements/public domain... However, it is not advisable to stand outside their front door though because then you're asking for trouble, lol.

^^ i've thought about the sidewalk thing a few times, but it's the street right of way/public sidewalk... just don't step any further.. :)

I have the same issue at several parks/schools up here where my boys play baseball. I error on the side of caution and leave my pistol in the car.

Well, the kids play at this school/park almost every day, and I have to go there to find them and bring them home for dinner etc... so it's pretty annoying. If this were a one time thing, I'd do the same...
In the last few days, not far away they have someone attempting to pick up little girls, and another kidnap/rape that happened too... so I'd like to know where I can go and can't.... I'll most likely spend another 20 years or more here.

IMHO, that's a wise move. I work on and around school property and I'm pretty careful.

Your best bet would be to go down to the assessor's office and have them look it up. They should have more detailed maps than online.

The side of caution? You chose to go defenseless and that's being cautious? I'm sorry but I don't really understand that. If you are that concerned just make sure you don't get between the ball field and the school, that should keep you on park property should it not?

I prefer not to be defenseless ^^
Now I've got another problem, I'm taking my child to a city run summer camp type of thing, and need to know if it's considered a "School" by definition on the CCW laws. I don't want to be carrying and hop out of the car to drop off or pick up the kid and be in some sort of No Zone... It's city property. Interesting thing too, it appears the PD is using it for a base camp or something every day... I'll have to just ask the nice officers. (maybe)

If the school district does not own the property then you are OK.

Ok, I'll double check, but it should be city property.
THANKS!

What about charter schools? How does that work with the whole school property thing? It is in Littleton if that helps. Any info is appreciated. Like to know if I can carry picking up my kids.
Yeah, they just built a Charter School across the street from us, but I just assume that any K-12 is off limits.
So I can't get a straight answer on this:
Say you're a teacher (I was once proud to say that). Can you leave your weapon in your personal car? Isn't your vehicle considered an extension of your home?
Just curious...

Yes, as long as the gun stays in the car you are good to go.

By CO law your okay, but you get caught by the school and your fired.

Even if they own the property, but don't hold classes there you are okay.

Oh yes, let's not forget this part.

You are still in the "1000 yard school safety zone" , I don't know how this will affect you if are stopped while walking your dog and carrying.

No such thing as a "1000 yard school safety zone" under Colorado concealed carry laws.
I wouldn't bother crossing the street, personally. I think the local government, not the school district, owns the sidewalk.
Besides...you can what if this stuff to death. Use common sense and keep your gun properly concealed. Go about your business and nobody's gonna know.

This.
Translated: if you have to pull and shoot, carrying on a sidewalk in front of a school will be the least of your worries.
That question was actually already answered, but the reason I asked it, was because back when I was running, I wasn't wearing all that much clothing and not taking too much trouble to conceal. I do mostly run at night though, so that is part of the reason I don't spend a lot of effort to make sure nothing is poking out. Just didn't want to be running and have some patrol spot me, and at the same time, be in front of a school. Also, on one of my running routes, I would go on a sidewalk that went next to a school's track and field, with no fence separating the areas.
I have a more important question since the original topic has already been handled... How the hell do you CCW an MP5? Not a K, just a normal MP5. It is really hard!...

Wear the weapon and don't worry about it. I would not deliberately enter a school ground in violation of the law. But being on the edge in a park would not concern me at all. It is not like you are going to be waving the pistol around or anything.

Correct. But there is no distinguished line between the school grounds and the city park. I believe I know where the lines are, but haven't taken time to confirm with any legal authority. We had a community get together a few weeks back, but all the officers on site were busy flirting with all the little old ladies concerned about stupid stuff in the hood.
I'll find out eventually.
Dude, just go talk to the schools janitorial/maintanence/grounds keeping staff, I'm POSITIVE the head honcho there will have an answer for you.

Not bringing it up to school officials. Nothing like setting someone off that I've got a gun.
Will talk to PD next chance I get and also to county assessors office. I'm no rush, I just don't anywhere through the park ccw. I take the bo staff with me instead or just go around the park/school as needed. [Pepsi]
Just do what I do and drive through the park. You're cool as long as you're in your vehicle. Plus, the kids love seeing trucks on the soccer field and tramping though the pea gravel.
