^ Skully, you know West Mag. has been mostly clear cut? Not sure what the drainbow/hippie/homeless population is up there but it could be high.

Ya might try Rainbow Lakes or Brainard Lake between Ned. and Ward.

All of West Magnolia? I go in through the Rollinsville side off of Moffet Tunnel rd. I looked around the net and found articles on it, what a shame............ that area was fun to explore. Looks like they did not take all of it, the school bus rd and the old mine equipment areas are still there.

That place was pretty big with lots of trees and areas to explore. I know last time I went there (2011).

Hmm problem is finding a place not going to be packed with campers? Why I like wheeling it in, the subarus and Hondo pilots/CRVs stay away. [Beer]

Dang Jenny creek would have been a good one, Loch Lommond is nice, but a bit mild.

I'm doing Jenny Creek tomorrow on the ATV. Probably wouldn't be interested in doing it in the truck the next day. Plus, last time I was up that way, there was at least one or two places my truck probably won't go.

They started cutting last year. Not much left. Not sure how far back the cutting goes. The W. Mag. entrance , from Hwy 119, is all gone. Some of my favorite Mt. biking trails, through the forest, are gone.

CHinn lake is nice, go up fall river road until the super knarling switchback, there is a house there the entrance is right there. Nothing hard core in there. Loch Lomand is just north of there in fact there is a cut over to the road going up to loch lomand. YOu wanna meet up and follow up me up? Sat morning early want to get there as early as possible to catch a piece of land.

I've done Kingston before, and I'd do it again. It's a longer trail, but climbs pretty high and has awesome views.

I did it with an 86 4runner on 31's. There are a few decent obstacles, but nothing that isn't either avoidable, or doable with a good spotter. Will you be in the Amigo?

Yes sir. Only has limited slip in the back and weak clearance. A good spotter should be fine. As long as I can get back out solo in case my wife wants to stay and hike around.

Red elephant is the most difficult of the three trails, mainly because it's steeper. Limited slip would definitely help.

I don't want difficulty to deter anyone tho. That trail damage sight has some good pics and descriptions of the trails, so if a trail looks too difficult for anybody, we can keep looking. I'm also willing to go further South (285) or North Boulder, Longmont area.

The back end of my truck works pretty good. Has some kind of positrack setup or whatever GM used back then. The front end is open. I lack a bit in the ground clearance department since I a only running stock tires (265/75/16) and my wheel base is a little long for really tight turns.

The wife seemed a little excited too. She will probably tag along as well. Assuming we aren't dead tired from the ATV trip tomorrow.

Really?

Red elephant was easy peasey, just big hills. Mill Creek has a lot more ruts and rocks. There is going to be a lot of them up there for Bill Moore. I just I can find some place at Chinn's Lake. Hope to be there by 11am and get a spot.

I was fine on all of them, but more rigs in our group struggled on Red Elephant than the others. The steep climb mixed with rocks led to some slippage for a few.

Will have to look, it has been a while since I have been up there, figured I want to combine water with my camping to make it cooler looking that is.

I have done the Red Elephant/mill creek/Bill moore combo I dont know how many times in the last 5 years. I realized just now I am getting bored of it. :)

I wish I had the time to do some of the FAR away trails. I do want to go out to Grizzly lake St elmo area hoping for this year but 2-3 hour drive just to get in the area is a pain. Definitely a group thing.

All this talk of previous Jenny Creek runs got me thinking last time I was there the main only really difficult obstacle was right after the creek crossing if your heading up. Last time I went it took all the fun out of it.

Those Jenny Creek pictures and videos must not be very recent. Last year that same spot was way worse. We were coming down on the ATVs and stopped and watched two lifted suburbans trying to come up it. One made it (barely) and one got some kind of double high centered on the rear diff and a rocker panel an then got I to a large boulder on the drivers door and then it was pretty much game over.

No way my truck could have made it through there on stock tires with no lift.

That means it has gotten better. :)

Clarify my post / video, that video was from 2010, it was too easy, took the fun out of the trail, meaning I like a little challenge and I walked right over it.

I also had wanted revenge on the obstacle as the previous year I think, '09 or '08 I had 31's and it was rutted out and wet, I slipped off the rocks and got hung up on my belly pan, I had to winch off of it.

Went back in 2010 someone cut down the tree on the right and it filled in with dirt so my re-match, I felt robbed. [Coffee]

I've always wanted to do spring creek, its probably the most difficult relatively close trail around.

Most difficult trail I've done was saran wrap down by the Springs. 31" a/t's, some armor, and a rear locker are all I had, did the "low road" too. Took some excellent spotting and some finesse, but I made it will only minor rear quarter panel damage. I'll have to dig out some pics.

I did Spring Creek the first time with spotting and no damage. I did it a second time and got lazy and dented a rocker panel.
I almost forgot! I did NOT do the huge boulder in the beginning of the trail. My friend with the same vehicle (minus the supercharger) did it though. He had a lot more body armor on his rig and was a lot more experienced. I had made maybe one payment on my truck at the time.

ETA: Checked out the link for the Empire loop. Surely easy for Skully, but I'm interested. It'd be nice to do something that needs some spotting. My wife doesn't really know how to spot me on stuff except, "Am I on a rock?!" "Yep!" lol.

Last time I did Spring Creek the Rock Garden a WJ mildly lifted went up the bypass, they got stuck worse as it was narrow and rutted out. The rock Garden at least it is wide and can take many different lines and zig zag through.

I love the 3 trails up there Red Elephant/MIll Crek/Bill Moore (Empire loop), spend all day doing them, beautiful area, lots of different things to crawl over etc. I just fall back on them so much if I cant figure out where to go that I realized I need to find some new fall backs. They are also SUPER busy on holiday Weekends.

Directions with taking Red Elephant;
Go up Red Elephant (say hello to the rude angry looking residents that live off the first part of the trail.) Go up this narrow steep hill and watch out for the rutted out area with rocks/boulders and the 500 steep roll off hill. Make your way up the 3-4 tight switchbacks. When you get to the top and go through the dense tree area, you will come to a meadow open area with the first Y, take a right if you want to go the easy way (counter clockwise) on Mill Creek (going down the hills with the rocks/cliffs) or pass that Y and come to the second Y and take a right to the funner way (clockwise) make sure you stop at the "Empire Hilton" either direction you take and gander at the bug infested beds you would never sleep on and say hello to "Rudy" the bear. Either direction you go when you come back to main road after completing Mill creek head west (right) until you come down a hill and another Y take a right to Bill Moore Lake. Pose in the old barely there cabins near the lake.

I have down this trail so many times I can do it half blind. [Coffee]

(BTW Irving I have never seen anyone get spotted on the Empire loop even in a stock XJ. Your should be good. :) )

Looks good, what size tires? [Beer]

Trying to find one for my wife and get me another one, mine is cosmetically falling apart. Motor still good and drivetrain only 3-4 years old. Just looks Fugly.

BTW (my opinion here) Long arms are overrated for the cost to benefit ration. Unless you need TONS of lift for 35's and up, 33's work just fine, you need a balance of lift and cut out/bump stopped areas, armor and lockers. Been there and done that with long arms and coilovers, 37's yadda yadda, I found myself working on the Jeep more than driving it and it sucked on the highway. Mine now is perfect height 4-5" and 33's, short arms and the thing rides smooth in my book. Gone everywhere I have pointed it, just like Hurley, I got older and realized I needed more of a utilitarian vehicle for camping/exploring/wheeling.

Agreed here. This has become one of our standbys because it is relatively close to town, and you can have a variety of experiences depending on which turns you take. Plus you can stop at the Lewis Sweet Shop on the way back down, which is always a hit for my wife and the kids.

Ran it all around the rockies and moab on 37 MTR'S without an issue. Even made it all the way through pritchett which isn't swb friendly. New TJ is sitting on 33's until I can rip into it........ I hear ya...... We just had our first so the next one after this will be a 4 door for sure...

Here is the part of Jenny Creek trial from Skully's video. Hard to tell from the picture but it is a pretty tough obstacle. I tried to go up and over one of the big rocks to the left side on my ATV but it wasn't going to happen.

33 KM2's, I'm at 6" now with an RE 4" lift and a 2" spacers and blocks. I put the budget boost on it a little over a month ago and it pulled my front axle back, so I was thinking adjustable short arms for $350 - $400 or long arms for $600.

I would take exit 263 (Denver West Blvd.) and head back east. When you hit the traffic light at Colfax you will see the mall. Or you can take the Colfax exit and head back east a bit. The mall is close to I-70 and Colfax.

Guys doing the Empire Loop?

Traffic from 119 over to I-170 up to Idaho Springs was horrible. :(

Labor day weekend coupled with the tunnel repair took forever to get through Idaho Springs to Fall River road. So just prepare for the traffic.

My camping weekend plans?
We Got to Chinn Lake at 12pm Sat. Found a decent campsite as everything at the lake was taken. Set up, went for a short walk, gathered some kindling.

Wife worked Friday night and had been up since 4pm the day before so she was exhausted and wanted to take a nap. Boys decided to take a nap in the tent as well. 2:00pm thunder, lightening and a drenching rain rolled in.

Didn't stop, by 6:30 everything was drenched, muddy, and couldn't get a fire going as it kept getting drenched. Oldest boy was coughing and sneezing he already had a minor stuffy nose so this wasn't good. His temp was 100 and got worried considering even if the rain stopped by 7-8 the night was going to be cold. Decided for saving us a cold miserable night we tore down camp in 45 minutes and headed back home.

Still raining as we went down the trail, and down the Hwy until we got to Golden.

We had Smores on the porch, apparently that is all the boys REALLY wanted to do. [Coffee]

A colossal failure for a camping trip. Boys are too young for that KIND of camping, need to have nice weather for the boys to camp. Probably will go back up there next weekend to spend a day exploring and have a picnic. Avoid the traffic and the Holiday.

Sorry to hear about the foiled camping Skully.

Thanks! [Beer]

Kind of depressing since we held off camping last year '12 as our last camping trip Aug '11 was miserable as well. 2 niter in a nice campsite up at St Elmo. Youngest was 2 at the time, he was excited at first, boy loved dirt what could be better? He became this whiny brat who didn't want to do anything we were doing, hounding mom the entire first two days, and night. On the eve of the 2nd night camping mom was frazzled and about ready to pull her hair out. We torn down and headed home.

So this time was going to be different, even the wife wanted 2 nights but I overruled saying lets see how the 1st night goes. Hope though, the boys were both doing good, just the weather and the fear of the oldest getting sicker.

Yeah stuff happens, it's all good we will get a good size group together at some point, it will be epic! Lol

The nasty part was definitely rear locker minimum, or major suspension. Obviously I don't have much suspension lol.

It was only raining when we first got to Loch Lommond, then it all cleared out and was nice. That last LL pic was after it cleared out.

I missed the school bus, but there was a VW bug, a junker van, and a pos pickup that all appeared to be being lived out of. I guess I'd rather be homeless in the mountains than in downtown Denver.

Only "upgrade" from factory is 265/75-16 tires, which are only an inch or so larger. It's got the TRD off road package which gives you an off road suspension and electronic rear locking differential. Otherwise bone stock.

I plan to add a winch, very minor lift, and some sliders, but otherwise she does what I need her to do.

Isuzu has a diesel truck they sell everywhere but here that is basically like a diesel Chevy Colorado. It is supposed to get a solid 40mpg. Could you imagine people buying S-10s, Tacomas, Frontiers, Rangers etc as commuter vehicles here?
Pretty sure all those companies make small diesel pick-ups for everywhere but here. Who knows why they aren't available stateside.

Yeah just about every manufacturer in the industry makes a diesel version overseas. Why the US auto industry has not gotten on board is beyond me. I've read several different theories on auto forums I participate in, but anybody's guess is as good as mine.

I'd love 40mpg, excellent torque, reliability, longevity etc, and I'm certain much of the US would as well.

The Titan should be a beast. It is supposed to get a 5.0 litre Cummins V-8 turbo diesel making over 500 ft. lbs. of torque and 300 horsepower.

I had heard a couple of years ago Toyota was going to put some sort of diesel in their Tundra but it just never happened.

I would love a smaller truck with a four cylinder turbo diesel. In fact, after I hit the lottery, one of my projects was going to put a VW turbo diesel out of one of their cars into an older Toyota truck.

Yes. It is a spot at the bottom of that trail. Wasn't really very muddy. It was way muddy last year. The first guy in our group drove into it and the front of his machine just nose dived and half disappeared. This year it was maybe a foot deep or so and didn't cover near as much area.

Middle St Vrain is an awesome trail, but you shouldn't do it alone if you plan on doing Coney flats as well (bigger rocks). Those water holes are not very deep, I have had stock XJ's run through them easy, just got to take it slow, there is always rocks in all those puddles that snag shock mount and diffs. Those two together are my favorite trails.

So you went up starting at Camp Dick and then backtracked? You were part way on Coney flats if you got to the sharp left and went up to the big water crossing. Do the big water crossing you come down Coney Flats and out Beaver reservoir. (funny putting those two trails together, start at CAMP DICK then exit BEAVER reservoir. he he)

So you didn't go through the big water crossing (the water at the top of the hill?) [Coffee]

Still get a slight hesitation every time I decide to drive through the BIG water.

Yeah we were solo, so we didn't touch Coney. The puddles ended up not being too bad, but you are right about the rocks.

I'd like to do Coney sometime, but St. Vrain is about the rocky'est I want to do until I get some sliders and better armor lol.

Rocker guards definitely help but most of Coney is not that bad, the roughest part is the start off of Middle St Vrain, big hill, some rocks, and ruts. Right before the BIG lake (not really a lake more like a really wide creek) is a little rock garden area. Once your through the water it is mellow. I have camped up there at the top, right near the creek. Beautiful area and there is this awesome hiking trail at the top that you can walk.

Last time I was there we had a small group (4-5) out of town hikers walking up the Jeep Trail and made some snide remarks about us disturbing their peace as we drove by them as they had to wait for us to get through a narrow section. One of the members in our group decided to talk to them, with in a few short angry bursts from them we realized that they cant read the hiking trail sign at the start of Camp Dick. We informed them that "they" were not on the correct hiking trail that was a click to the north of the Jeep road. They then apologized and went back down the trail.

Yeah trail etiquette seems to be a thing of the past for some folks. Rather I'm ascending or descending, I will pull over for folks if I have an opportunity.

I have seen rude and ill mannered trail behavior from all groups. ATV, 4 wheel drive groups, hikers, equestrians...........etc.

The worse is Jeep guys against Toy guys against FORD guys.............. I usually wheel with a variety of different vehicles, but if you get you nothing but JEEP or TOY guys they can be overly rude.

If I am in a big group we run slower, usually let the smaller groups by including all groups.

Trail Etiquette uphill has the right of way....................but it will also depend on manners, 1 person going uphill and 8 people coming downhill. It would be easy for the 1 to back down and let the others go by.

You are right about Jeep vs Toy, which is funny because I've owned 4 XJ's and 2 Toys. They both wheel equally as well, as long as I do my part, kind of like firearms.....

Yeah many folks seem to forget that uphill has the right of way. Again, I use totality of the circumstances.

Looking at some of these 4wheeler pics has me wondering - what's it cost to get into them? I see prices from $6k-10k for new honda/polaris rigs. I'm assuming used might be half that plus cost of trailer, helmets and stuff like that. Not knowing anything about them, am I likely to get a lemon looking on craigslist for used rigs? Not that I really need anything else to tow behind the jeep, but they look darn fun...

If you are patient, you can get into them cheap. I have two of them. They are older but very reliable and will go just about anywhere. I paid $1400 for the pair of them. The trailer set me back another $400. The wife and I really enjoy them. We can go places that even the mighty jeeps can't go. I'd never buy a new one. You can spend $6K or more and it won't be worth half that in a year or two. The side-by-side ones are nice but for the price of a new one you could build one hell of a CJ5, CJ7, or XJ.

Yielding the right of way to uphill traffic isn't just etiquette, it is state statute. If you really want to get down to it, no one has right of way, just one position has the greater duty to yield right of way than the other.

I always wanted to go that route, couple ATVs and a big utilitarian hauler. When looking at there prices I was taken back and decided to stick with my Jeeps. One of these years maybe, that or get into horses, ultimate all terrain vehicle. :)

I think we may be up that way on Sunday, but after looking a bit closer at Chinaman on the traildamage sight, I think it's a bit much for my truck in it's current configuration.

I believe my truck is fully capable of running the trail, but until I get some sliders and upgrade from factory armor, I'm keeping the rocks to a minimum. Thanks for the invite though.

Probably glad I didn't come along lol. Traildamage has some flawed ratings as far as I'm concerned. I've done some 8 rated trails in a Cherokee with only rear locker and 31's, granted I'm a decent driver, but to say I've done trails that were only one or two ratings away from extreme, seems odd to me.

Well, the pictures I posted above were all taken with a Nikon D600, and a Nikon 16-35mm lens. I actually rented the setup for the weekend, and it did pretty good actually. My normal camera that my wife was toting is a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm lens. Its considered an entry level camera, but can still take great pics as well. She got some almost as good as what this thing did. Learning the settings, and developing skill, and then good glass is what makes the biggest difference on how good a pic comes out, a lot like learning to shoot a rifle good. I'm still a green horn by a long ways but I'm learning. Its actually kind of fun once you have your head in it. No reloading of ammo, or magazine restrictions, lol. Mega-pixels aren't everything, though they help to some degree. The D600 is a 24megapixel and the D3100 is a 14megapixel. The size of the image sensor, that the pixels are on plays a huge part in it. That's why a cameraphone with what is touted as a high megapixel camera can not compete with a real camera with a much bigger sensor. You can get into the action for under $600, or if you want to blow a ton of cash, $3000 or more can easily happen.

Cant believe I am going to miss most of this stuff this year due to $$ constraints and time open. I will have to live vicariously through others this year.................

I feel ya man, $$ seems to get tighter and tighter. Thanks Obama care!!

What trail did you have planned? Some of those trails around Empire make for some good snow bashing, even in the winter months. We were going to do Bill Moore Lake. I'm down for some snow bashing this year - never really done much winter wheeling.

Doesn't Bill Moore Lake have that real chancy spot that requires a winch, even late into the summer?

There is a healthy amount of snow at the top that can be hit or miss depending on how early or late it is in the summer. I usually do most of my wheeling in the late summer early fall, so I rarely have issues with snow.

Awesome, winter wheeling is definitely the type you want a few rigs for. I plan on getting at least one set of chains for the Taco.

There are quite a few trails that would be doable during winter months in all but the worst conditions, the key is finding the ones that aren't gated and closed during the winter.

Slaughterhouse gulch stays open all year, I believe Bunce school road does as well. Middle St. Vrain would be a good one, but I'm not sure of it's winter status.

We will have to try and get a few rigs together for a run.

With the Obama-economy, it is tight everywhere. I'd love to get a second camera similar to what I rented to take those pics, but that is out of the question right now. If you shop around on craigslist, etc, you can find some deals though. If you can set aside what a handgun would cost, you could get something pretty easily. Sure you won't have big fancy lenses, but you can still get some decent shots.

I've never seen anyone winch at Bill Moore Lake, but I've never run it with snow. The lead in road has a slight off-camber to it that isn't even noticeable when dry. I tried to run it years ago in my old YJ with rear Detroit, and it kept squirting my tail end off trail. As someone mentioned - there is lots of trail above tree-line so once we get deep into winter this trail is prob a no-go too.

have any of you wheelers been to the Overland Expo near Flagstaff, AZ? I saw an article about it the other day--looked to be an interesting show for folks that like to get out in the wilderness in a vehicle

She mover under her own power now!!!!! Not that I can drive her because of my back yet but she looks great in the driveway. Went from the first pick to the current one finally. Just a few little things to button up but all the heavy lifting is done and the 8.8 swap turned out great with the Artec kit.

We thought we would try Loch Lomond but there was snow at the trail head. We probably could have gone up a little but we were alone and I didn't want to get stuck alone.

I've been stuck going up to Loch Lommand before. Fortunately it was minor and I got out, but snow at the beginning of the trail just means even more snow as you go along. At least in my experience.

If any of you are running the rampart range system, watch out for booby traps (not joking). Apparently, someone found a spike trap left on the trail this last week. Saw a small thread about on the arf HTF and was on a couple news programs. Stay safe and alert... I was thinking about taking a stroll around rampart tomorrow, but maybe I'll try something else.

It's the hippy/liberal/democrat type people boobytrapping your trails. You guys with your off road machines are destroying our planet.

I dont know know what you guys are thinking. What about the children?

Didn't want to taint the wildlife thread with this stuff, but I finally got to test out the new Old Man Emu springs on my Xterra, along with the front Bilsteins, and wow what a difference, ride was great but most noticeable was the added articulation in the rear. The pics don't look like much, but similar obstacles have caused a tire to lift, and with the new springs I still had droop to spare (worth noting, I removed the rear sway bar when I installed the springs, so that was a huge help in the travel department). Most importantly I was able to cycle through my rear E-locker and run the downhill assist feature to ensure good working order.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190801/0bf8971c1f94508552417174711c2859.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190801/7217192150e33dc96646c98f228f0a95.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190801/0377695afd5cd027af0968cfaf04d6cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190801/cfec7549d37d6a66c08a8bdb4d5290c6.jpg

Removing my sway bars did a lot for keeping tires planned for me. I recently took a trailer up that same trail and never even engaged 4WD. In the past, like you said, I may have lifted a tire and interrupted forward momentum.

I pretty much always ditch rear sway bars, but as bad as my OEM leafs were, I opted to keep it, with the OME leafs and sway bar delete, it still feels more stable than before. I'm certain I could have done the whole trail in 2wd, but my 4wd system and the locker needed some use after being stagnant for awhile.

In full recognition that doing that trail in 2wd is no real brag (haha), I've definitely noticed obstacles that would hang me up on three wheels in the past, I can now breeze up in 2wd, which is cool. I don't have a ton of flex (it's mostly stock), but here it is fully flexed out on a rock. The little kids we were camping with were like, "Hey! I think your wheel is broken!"

With this four link in the rear, the driver side upper link hits the fuel tank and limits down travel on that side. No one makes the bent links anymore, so if I want to go further with this rig, I'll have to get the plans and fab up my own. The passenger side is on the bump stop here as well. Thinking about getting a Trooper that has a three-link in the rear and is impressively flexible (IMO) from factory.

Pretty decent articulation, us IFS guys have to rely on our rear suspension much more in the rocks and what not, unlike my XJ in the first post of this thread, that thing was super flexy with nothing more than a Rubicon Express 3.5" kit, and it wasn't even a long arm kit.

My neighbor is encouraging me to do a SAS swap. The Amigo would start getting real capable if I did that (assuming I could find gears low enough for 35's). I like the Amigo, but it's so damn small I've started camping with a trailer.

Those Amigos are pretty small, but quite capable, my Xterra is actually smaller than I'd like, as far as cargo space is concerned, and I regret parting with my Tacoma, I should have put a topper on it and had endless cargo space, but it was getting up there in mileage.
