I Inherited an Very low serial number 1903 springfield. I am looking to get it apraised so I can isure it properly. Also I want to try and figure out the history of the gun. It is getting cleaned right now and will post pics on monday when I get it back. Anyone out there do appraising?

There are some military gun forums and search sites where you can get an idea on history with the SS # and estimated prices according to condition. Good Luck[Beer]

You should also be aware that very low s/n M1903's had problems with the steel in the receivers, they tended to explode, so I hear. Most were destroyed, I believe, because of this defect. I'm not going to swear about what I've heard/read, but it's something you should check out before firing it.

If I remember correctly it was problem with quality control in the heat treating process that caused weak receivers.
