it may or may not be a bad idea. but i have painted probably 20 or so of my guns. 3 ar's my long distance gun. xds, shotguns. i havea problem, i know. but I cant leave well enough alone.

Krylon camo works great for metal and plastic. it will say on the can formulated for plastic. the key is to get the surface clean. i use brake parts cleaner. and then try not to touch any surface again before painting. i have had good success with the paint sticking permanently. there might be some gun solvents that might be problematic. but, I have not had any problems

I have found that the spray bomb camo paint holds up better with a little Matte clear on top of it. For a quick and inexpensive paint job, it holds up very well.

I reccomend krylon fusion and krylon matte clear for a good non-glossy cover. If you do the fusion, let it dry for a week another coat then clear it. It will last longer, if you dont let it cure for a week the first time you holster it you will have marks. Even with all that you will eventually get some wear marks but it is easy and cheap to fix.
