I woke up at about 3 this morning, and heard our Chocolote Lab, Finn, crying. Thinking that he just wanted to go out, I let him go out for the bathroom. About 0630, I fed all of the dogs breakfast. I knew something wasn't right when he wouldn't eat his food at all. He had some water a few minutes later, and promptly threw it up.
To keep the story short, it turns out he was severely blocked by two softball sized clumps of grass, of all things. He's recovering from surgery, but may not be out of the woods yet. They're doing a biopsy to check on things, and also explore the fact that he has pancreatitis as well.
We're at $5400 now, and I expect the bills to go over $6K. I may have to sell a bit of my collection. Has anyone used pet insurance before? Clearly wouldn't help in this case, but we may think about it for the future.
Sorry to hear about your dog. Best of luck to you and Finn!
As for pet insurance Ive never had it but, I've had to have emergency surgery on one of my animals. I hate credit cards but in this kind of senerio I opted for Care Credit and they have 0% interest for X amount of months and can also be used for human care.

Oh man, so sorry to hear!
Our black lab is in the middle of recovering from a big injury, I know how hard it can be.
I hope Finn recovers fully and quickly!

I'm terribly sorry to hear about Finn. I sincerely hope that he will fully recover.
I have never used pet insurance before but think it has a lot of great potential. In just the last year I've spent about $1200 on one of my two cats.
When we had a dog, we had a purebred Maltese. Apparently, they are very prone to epilepsy (especially pet store bred dogs - my wife got him from a friend as a puppy that got him from a pet store.). He also had pancreatitis. Over his 14 year lifetime, that dog cost me more in medical fees than BOTH of my kids have cost me in their 21 & 18 years. But you know, we loved him so we were willing to do whatever it took to help him.
Hope he gets better soon.

It's been 12 hours since the OP.
How's Finn doing?
Man... hate to hear about this stuff. I hope Finn gets well soon. I've spent quite a bit on my Buddy too. Prayers inbound.

Had a swing shift last night, so just got up. Finn's recovering well, and might be able to even come home today. He's 10, but in very good health so glad to hear about his recovery. Still haven't gotten any indication of the weight loss; blood work was good other than the pancreatitis. Apparently it can flare and subside, and it isn't going to kill him. We'll just have to increase his food intake since we switched to a very high quality brand.
Thanks again for all of your well wishes.

Glad to hear that Finn is recuping so well.
Now, you also have to tend to yourself - having a family member (even when they are a pet) need hospitalization is always stressful.
glad he is doing better! Hope he recovers quick and is back to his normal self.
i don't have pet insurance, never really looked into it, but might now! we have 2 dogs and I know we would do whatever it took for both of them.
