New M&P 45 another S&W problem

Hello all, I just picked up a new M&P 45 and took it out for the first time this weekend. The pistol would not go into full battery and the slide seemed to be jambed shut and I really had to pull with all I had to clear the chamber.

Seemed like I could load the round in the chamber and drop the slide and fire the round fine, but not always. Seemed like every round would lock the slide short of full battery when loaded off the top of the mag.

Any thoughts?

How many rounds did you put through it so far?

When I first got my M&P 40c, the very first round of each of the two original magazines failed to go into battery. It was only those two rounds though. After that everything was fine. Same question as DocMedic, how many rounds did you go through and did it seem to get better?

New mag springs can be too stiff. Unless it's a 1911, I rarely load mags to cap - Try this for your next couple range trips and see how it acts.

I loaded up 2, 10 round mags and shot those. I was pretty frustrated and didnt shoot it any more over the weekend.

It never got any better, and it seemed ok most of the tome(but not every time) if I loaded a single round into the chamber and fired it.

I was firing hand loads that I have shot probably 2500 of this recipe out of my 1911. Is it possible that these are to long for the M&P?

Yep, what's your oal? Also, was it hard to clear without a mag inserted? If so id say you have an issue with your ammo.

....well.....I hate to admit this, but I dont measure and trim my .45 ACP for the 1911. I have been pretty spoiled as that gun will eat EVERYTHING with out fail.

I guess I will measure and trim some up and see how they shoot. Man I cant tell you how dissapointed I was this weekend I have wanted one of these pistols for a long time, then I finally get one and I have issues with it.

I dont think I tried extracting a live round with out the mag. If a mag was inserted and I dropped the slide it woulndt go into full battery and the slide would be locked up hard.

I have run across the same issue on my Khar P45 - only it wasn't the oal for my re-loads it the "shoulders" of the bullets would not chamber, a bullet shape issue. I took the barrel out of the gun tested them, rejected the ones that wouldn't chamber and saved them for my 1911 that does not have that problem.
I have not had any problems with factory ammo but when it jammed they would be the worst jams I have encounterd. I bought this pistol for a CCW weapon but I don't carry it because I don't trust it.

Are you sending the slide foward with the slide LOCK or by pulling back on the slide fully to the rear and releasing it. I've seen many guns not go into full battery whe the slide lock is used to release the slide and not utilizing the full energy of the spring.

This is exactly the issue. I grabbed a different box of ammo and started checking it in the M&P, every round head spaced perfectly. I grabbed the box that I was trying to shoot over the weekend and the shape of the bullets have changed??? I have been reloading Xtreme bullets for years, and they have clearly changed the shape of the projectiles on this last batch.

I wish I would have checked a different box of ammo while I was out because I had a few hundred rounds of the older ammo with the proper projectiles in it. I am gonna contact Xtreme tomorrow and see what they have to say. I suppose I could check proper head space on the M&P and seat a batch of ammo shorter, that "should" solve the problem with the bigger "shoulder" of the bullet.

The M&P is designed so that you are required to pull the slide rearward to take pressure off of the slide stop before releasing it so you can't just drop the slide like a Glock for instance.

I've never had a problem feeding the first round from using the slide stop. Well, I don't actually release the slide stop, just jam the mag in and it lets go.

Really? I just bought a brand new M&P9 a couple weeks ago and that was one of the things I noticed. Guess you just have to push harder on the slid stop lever than I was pushing which is entirely possible since I don't operate handguns in this manner anyway. I just looked and saw a little added tab and assumed they built them this way to teach good habits. *shrugs*

Yes you can use the slide release to release the slide on mine too.

I just got off of the phine with Xtreme bullets, they said they changed to profile of there .45 cal bullets. She was really nice and said that it should have been stamped on the box "NEW PROFILE", but since it wasnt, she would said me a new box of 500 for my troubles.

I am assuming I can load these with a slightly shorter COAL so that they head space properly on the case mouth and not the bullet on the lands and grooves, right?
