here is a post from Jim on another thread. He's throwing a build party in Windsor

Ok back from a good 10 day R&R with no contact from the world.
I can sponsor a build party this July 24th or 31st (rain date). I am looking at these days to accomodate brycom who lives in the neighborhood, and has those 2 saturdays free.
Hoopty is in (pm or e-m me regarding an ak parts kit) i have room for another 6 max people.
I have a 12T press, mig welder, and bandsaw, if needed. I do not have a spot welder for rails, rivet tools, or anything else needed to complete an AK. So thats where it stands.
I would like to kick off by 9am. We can get food delivered from the good places to eat in town or who knows.
DISCLAIMER::
This is a get together for like minded gun owners to build an AK for their own personal use.

THIS IS NOT a party for those who are assembling a rifle for sale and or profit.
ALL FIREARM LAWS will be observed based on the honor system. there will be no one looking over your shoulder. I do not want to hear any talk about making anything a questionable, select fire item just because it is that easy (if you believe the internet and or antigunners) I expect the same courtesy here as i or anyone would do at your place.
YMMV

Well I'll be there along with another guy that has a beautiful german kit.

I have flat bending jig, front rivet tool, plinker jig for rear trunnion, trigger gaurd jig, oxy acetalyne torch for heat treating, no-go headspace gauge and the "know how" for these tools.

We will need a spot welder for reciever rails(or we can use jim's mig welder) and any other trunnion/barrel/make building easier tool you may have.

Best to buy the flats with the pre-bent top rails or even better a Nodak spud receiver. Get all your build and compliance parts now!!!

If anyone has any questions on what they will need to build one let me know.

Also I have some m14/M1 garand tooling. I have a barrel vise, reciever wrench, 308 and 30-06 headspace gauges and other small tools. If anyone wants to put together one of these send me a PM and we can figure out what you need...

I would like to know what all I need to buy? If needed I can get the spot welder and the tong from AK builder to make it work.

That would be the best thing to get. I think I had problems with some of my rails because of the spot welder tongs were not properly seated on the metal.

I would say spot welder with the tongs is the way to go.

Parts kits. there are tons on Gunbroker also. There are lots of other companies that sell them to. Try to get one with original barre. You are going to pay more but the barrels will generally headspace perfectly if it is matching parts kit. Get a STAMPED reciever parts kit only. If you get a milled then you will need to reweld them or grind down the stubs and fit them in a stamped reciever. Just get the stamped reciever. Yugo kits have 1.6mm flats which we can not bend at this time unless you get a jig from ak-builder. If you get a yugo kit then buy a nodak spud reciever.

https://www.apexgunparts.com/index.php/cPath/51

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=639688

Barrels: These seem the cheapest. If your kit comes with original barrel then you don't need a commercial one. Just call and make sure they will work with your kit!!!!! I know the yugo and chinese rifles have smaller barrel diameters. If anyone finds a new us made yugo barrel let me know!!!!! These will need to be drilled for the barrel pins which means they need to be headspaced. I have no-go gauge for 7.62X39 ONLY! If you are going to use a new barrel you need to get a go-gauge 7.62 and go/no-go gauge for 5.45X39. These barrels say they already have the gas holes drilled which is good.

http://lancasterarms.com/ACCESSORY%20SELECT%20PAGE%20NEW.htm

Compliance parts: Get them with your flats at AK builder along with your rivets. You will need 7 U.S made parts total for 922R compliance. Trigger group (3 parts), pistol grip, muzzle device, piston, and reciever. If you get a U.S made stock kit that counts as 3 parts and if you get a new us made barrel that counts as one.

Romanian underfolder flat http://www.ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29884

Fixed stock flat http://www.ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29838

Rivets: http://www.ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=166

Center support: http://www.ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=categories.view&category_id=166

At a very minimum you will need to complete your build:

AK47 parts kit/with barrel
Reciever flat or commercial receiver
compliance parts
Rivet kit with center support

Any questions please ask.

That Bulgy kit from Apex looks like a great deal, looks like they have a US barrel already too.

I'd love to get in on this. The 31st is better for me though. Is that just a rain date?

I bought the last Bulgy 74 flat, as well as a GO 5.45x39 gauge if anyone else is building a 74.

As well as all the other stuff. Gonna order a kit from Apex tomorrow.

for the time being it is. unfortunately the date will be fluid until 1 week before the build party.
OR we could do it august 7th , i might be unemployed by then? let me go through my scheduling and see what juggling we can do.

We have a press so were good there. I'm not sure how many peopel are coming but I'm sure there is still room

Things might be put on hold due to my son getting surgery soon. Just waiting on a date.

I'll keep you guys posted. We still are going to need a spot welder with the modified tongs. We can still do the rails with a mig welder but it just takes a bit longer.

Crikey Bryan, I have to follow this all over the board...... I just posted on the other thread and then saw this link.

I thought the party was this weekend, so I was trying to figure a way to get you my spot welder. If you guys want to use it I can meet you on Sunday at I-25 and HWY 34. I will be at the Best Western for a WWII reenactment meeting at 2:00. It still needs to be modified, but I know you and Jim can do it pretty easily. Let me know if you want to use it.

Also, if you need an extra press and have a truck, you can come down and grab mine. I will bring it home from work, but you have to give me a days notice. I don't drive the big Dodge much these days, so it stays at work with my press.....

OK gentlemen. We need to do a roll call so we can get an idea of who's comming. Also let us know what kind of tooling your bringing if any. So sound off here and let us know.

There will be a few things that we could use that would make things go a lot quicker.

1. Dremmel tool with cut off wheels and/or grinders. These will be needed for fitting and demilling you kits. It would be best to get a headstart on demilling you kits and getting the rivet heads ground off and if possible removal of the rivet and old receiver.

2. Punchs to remove rivets and pins. If you have them bring them. That way people aren't standing around waiting for them.

3. Drill bits. Again same thing, so people aren't standing around.

4. Trigger gaurd jig. I have one but it is "difficult" to use. If someone has one BRING IT!!!

5. Spot welder. Mule will be getting a call here soon and I will try to meet up with him but I may not be able too. It would be easier to have one of you guys bring one already modified.

6. Any other "makes building an ak easier tool" would be helpful. Rivet locators, barrel presses, trunnion jigs, ect, ect......

Time will be July 24th Saturday from 9AM to 2ish at Jim's house in Windsor.

PM me for Jims address if you are coming. You can call me also Bryan 970-690-7614

I have 2 dremel units. as for beer. the windsor p.d. has a high kill ratio, dropping my name will not get you off the hook if they think alcohol is involved, trust me. I'm not a consumer of beverages, so don't bring it if the intent is to thank me, donate it to charity (she's 2 blocks over):)
i could use some rivets.
drill press, 12T hydro press, bench grinder, and mig is on site. i would like to start by 9-:930 the latest as i have 3-4 projects on the burner (and lawn) i need to wrap up before the 26th.
need a head count as i have a small workshop.

Thanks for the kindly reminder, I WILL be there. I've got a small belt/disc sander I can bring and a flat bending jig (bolt type) and a MAPP torch. I'll review the needful things list to see if I have it to bring. Otherwise have 5 underfolder flats and rails (suitable for polish underfolder) of which I only have three kits to finish them out - so two are available for those who need one. need rivets though.

Forgot to tell you Sat, I have a FAL receiver wrench too... So, when you decide to do yours let me know and we can get together and work on them. I have a FAL build DVD too.
I think I gave all of my other build DVDs to T. but will have to check if you want to do something else.

Yeah I may need that someday. I have been wanting a FAL for a while. I just have limited funds. I heard the Sarco argentinian kits are real nice.

I modified your spot welder. I couldn't find 1/4" copper rod anywhere so I used brass instead. I was using it on some defunked ak receivers and it seems to be making them pretty good.

Sounds like you should just get an east german kit and virgin romy barrel from apex instead ;) oh my dad decided he needed a media blaster from harbor freight so that would make refinishing nice its always good to blast ;) so I figure I might as well make a phosphate coating setup, might be able to double as a blueing tank as well. Also for space I have a big warehouse with all the space needed just no runing water though and it's In galeton (that town is about 10 miles east of eaton) otherwise I only have a half empty 2 car garage. On the otherhand a friend of mine that builds aks lives up north and has a big shop and is building a small personal range at his place, I could see if he'd be interested in having a bp as he's talked about it (he's also a member on gunco)
