View Full Version : Going camping this weekend
so im going camping this weekend with the wife and daughter, I was gona go to the national forest just south of fairplay. Any one know a good place around that area that has a lake were i can fish and shoot,
hopefully thats not a state park that i have to pay to camp. and if anyone wants to go theres a open invitation for families to join us
the best place i've been for open camping, guarantee fish (trout) and shooting is Taylor Park. Going the first full weekend of Aug, kinda far but it is so nice. You can find a spot to camp where you won't hear or see anyone.
were is that at, what part of colorado

a bit further out than Fairplay- never been there myself...
but it sounds like the kind of camping that I'm used to (when I lived in Alaska)

This is my (and my wife's) FAVORITE place to camp. There are some fantastic places to camp just off of Taylor Resv. on the road to Tincup.
The area is beautiful, you can rent a boat from the marina on the lake for pretty decent price, the fishing is good, and most places you'd choose to camp would be really good for shooting too.
While I don't recommend it, you can rent ATV's and UTV's (such as the Polaris Razor, http://www.polarisindustries.com/en-us/ATV-RANGER/2010/RANGER-RZR-Side-By-Side-Vehicles/Pages/Overview.aspx) from the Taylor Park Trading Post, and if you want a restaurant meal, the Nugget Cafe at the Trading Post serves great food for fair prices (I love their breakfast waffle bar). My wife had us stay at the Taylor Park Trading Post RV Park last year. I'm not so fond of that place, but it does have full hookup. To me, it isn't camping when you're side-by-side with everybody else in the camp.

It's on the West side of Cottonwood Pass from Buena Vista. The pass is easy enough to go up and down (paved on the East side to the top, gravel on the West side) and is very scenic.
what would you guys say 5-6 hour drive
Tarryall lake south of Jefferson, camp fish shoot in the forest,
nice thats a little closer, ima head up to salida tomorrow morning they have a nice free outdoor range there
Just got back from Taylor today. Caught me some nice Brown Trout in a little beaver pond I would've never even bothered with and of course caught some Rainbow up at Mirror Lake (which is stocked). Had a hell of a time.
Taylor's sure getting crowded anymore, though. I saw more people on Cottonwood Pass than I'd used to see total in a week's camping.

Mirror Lake is beautiful and a great drive from Taylor. I saw the most amazing rainbow (super HD in brilliance) last year along that drive.
4 hr drive... 5-6 if you are in a camper or towing a lot.
excellent place if you get a change to go. nothing beats camping at 9500 ft
I'm in salida right now, just left Walmart and they sell rifles and shotguns, wow. There ammo stock is full with reloading supplies.
+1 on Taylor. Shooting, camping, dirt riding, & fishing last weekend. Great time.

With so many fans of Taylor Resv area for camping, etc. we should consider setting up a COAR15 camping trip to Taylor at some point.
just got home but didnt do any camping, everyone backed out last minute so i just went to visit a friend in salida.
i have never seen so many cops like i seen on the stretch between morrison and salida hahaha

You shoulda honked while driving by and flipping them off - all the while screaming "You'll never take me back - alive".
This way you coulda met them face-to-face.

that would have not been a good idea with the amount of guns and ammo i had in the back hahaha

probably not ever a good idea - even if you're driving a busload of nuns to see the pope.
But, given your situation, I think it would have been particularly ill advised.
I was expecting cops on my way too and from Bailey today, but I didn't see any.
yea and i would have had withdrawls from this forum in jail, i dont think they have meds for that hahaha
thinking of going to georgetown in the morning to do some fishing, anyone wanna go
I have a friend who is a member of that private lake above George town. The wait list is like 20 years long.

That'd be fun. [UZI]

Not a problem, man. I'm a bail bondsman in Salida. You're not a flight risk...right? ;)
We do have a nice public range, here, and I appreciate it everytime I use it.
As for camping at Taylor Park/Reservoir...I slid the camper back in the truck this week, in order to do just that.
I need to keep an eye on these forums a bit more often.

I'm interested. Where is the range in Salida? :D

Pook, the range is 10 or 12 miles outside of Salida, on Hwy 285, towards Buena Vista.
I've watched it being slowly developed over the last 10 years (helped with funding via Friends of the NRA banquet & donated classes) and seen how much use it gets...yet, thankfully and to the credit of the users there has been very little in the way of damage or malicious behavior.
It currently consists of 3 pistol ranges, a trap/skeet range and a rifle range (out to 1000 yds.), permanent restrooms, and is the result of the hard work of many great folks.
Come and enjoy but please try to leave it just a bit better than you found it.
Best regards.
yea its a pretty nice range, its been 2 years since ive been there and its changed alot (for the better) its right next to the land fill there

Well that is the beauty of my situation I can go pretty much whenever I feel like it I just more fun and safer traveling in groups on atv's. I also have room to transport other atv's. Of course also would enjoy shooting with some other members should the occasion arise.
that works i could borrow a friends atv to ride how long are you thinking of going for i could go anytime just have to give my job notice, so next week would work

I am leaving Aug 5th coming back the 8th. I don't have quads myself, but there will be at least 5-6 in our group. We will have at least 25-30 people there. Its is an annual trip for family and friends.
The more people the merrier, even if you don't camp near us. If you are interested, lets chat over the phone.
