Okay, so I still have the dog..[Tooth] Just saw this big, ugly bastard hanging out on the gate last night. Biggest dragonfly I have seen in awhile.
I remember catching dragonflies when I was a little kid.
It was a huge thing back then.

Must be something going on with those dragonflies. My cat has brought in three of the biggest ones I've ever seen in the last couple of days. The wife is not pleased with the cats hunting skills. :)

Some insects do better during dryer summers. I know the Trico mayfly up in Spinny Mile just explode during dry summers. Wet summers, their population drops to under half.
Dragonflys prefer still waters to lay their eggs and their nymph stage is fairly long. If you have a larger body of standing water around there, note the conditions and I suspect when the conditions are the same in the future the dragonflys will be big and plentiful again.
Sorry... Used to read a lot about bugs when I was fly fishing every weekend.

Don't laugh too loud on that one. My last boss in the USAF works for DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and told me 3 years ago about a DARPA project that was to take live insects and turn them into controllable cyborg bugs - for spying, etc.
I used to have the DARPA link to the project info but I can't find it so here's an article about the project from Time magazine.

They really may be watching you.
Speaking of DARPA and new pets..check out this "dog". Of course, you'd have to get used to the deafening World Cup vuvuzela sound with this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1czBcnX1Ww
On a side note, I usually don't give dragonflies a second thought, but yesterday (probably at the same time Marlin was starting this thread), I ran into a swarm of dragonflies on the road. They leave a nasty mess on your windshield, let me tell ya. They definitely got my attention.
