I'd like to find a new small safe of some kind to keep my pistol in for home defense. It needs to fit in a dresser drawer (now that my kid has started crawling, keeping my current locking case under the bed is not good, and it's too big to fit in the drawer), be secure, and easily open in the dark. I'd prefer a mechanical lock vs electric, as batteries will go bad at the worst times.

I've seen a few different kinds out there, but am not sure what is worth getting vs staying away from. What do you all use/like/hate?

I love the 2-3 gun safe I got from harbor freight. It was $35 last year, comes with security bolts for proper mounting, heavy stainless steel locking pins, and an electronic key pad for fast access. Keys are not lighted, but it's the standard keypad layout so takes only a couple seconds to get it open even in the dark. I know you worry about the battery deal ... don't. This one emits a periodic beep WEEKS before the batteries die. Mine still has original batteries, and that's with almost daily use.

At this price, I'll just buy more of these to keep up with any gun growth I experience.

I have the mini gun safe from Gun Vault. It works ok, but the keypad could be faster. You have to push hard on each pad in order for it to work well. I think the biometric model would be a better option but I do not have any experience with it.

My Winchester, single pistol safe broke. Typing in the code on the keypad no longer opens the safe, so I have to use the key now. I need to call them.

Otherwise, the batteries still work, and have for over two years now.
