Why Switzerland Has The Lowest Crime Rate In The World.
"The key to freedom is to be able to have the ability to defend yourself &, if you dont have the tools to do that, then you're going to be at the mercy of whomever wants to put you away."

+1. A lot of people in this country need to get that through their thick heads. The Constitution and Bill of Rights are meaningless without the force of arms to back them up.

Switzerland is not all peachs and cream, Ask Hannu

Yeah, and they get to eat fish heads too. Yummmm.[ROFL1]

American Dad said it best when he said "Do you know what we call fish heads and tail in America? Garbage."
Japanese people can't own a gun though. I would take a fighting chance with a little crime then a total ban on selfdefense with a firearm. I don't know if that's something we did after WWII or if normal poor people could own firearms. But I doubt it. Why? Because power hungry people in government have one thing in common no matter where they are. They want a monopoly on violence and want to use it as they see fit without questions.
I don't get it because I don't mind sharing. [Bang]

I think a lot more of it is cultural. Yeah the guns help but think about the demographics of the country.
ETA:
Something I found interesting, according to a Wikipedia article foreigners commit crimes 3.7 times as much as locals. Immigration seems to be a problem there as well.
I don't get gun control and I don't ever want to find out the hard way what it means to without guns. I'm sure the real secret behind it all is a killer.

Yeah right, most rapes, violence, and petty crimes in Japan aren't reported. The LE doesn't even mess with the yakuza with a few exception. Iceland is usually what most says have the lowest crime rate in the world.

Wow
Umm, Shouldn't that Read "Japan has a lower REPORTED crime rate than Switzerland."?
My Wife tells me that her Cousins living/working in Japan will go to the Yakuza instead of the LE because they actually want something to be done.
Just sayin
If I'm not mistaken (and a quick search didn't find any convincing statistics, but I only spent a few minutes)
Statistically, the largest correlation to crime is poverty. In non-passion crimes, and according to rational reasoning theory, someone with no assets and no prospects has substantially less to lose. It's a grim sort of risk/reward calculation of the pros and cons of committing a robbery.

Yep. poverty and unemployment.
Pretty sure Hannu's from Finland, BTW, not Switzerland. Although he may have traveled to Switzerland before.

Yes, it should, I'm sorry. Japan and a lot of other countries all have a lower REPORTED crime rate than Switzerland. As other people have pointed out, crime rates are more about culture and demographics; I would be wary of trying to link liberal gun laws with lower crime rates, because our opponents could easily try turning it around the other way.

Yeah, Pretty bad when the Populace turns to the organized crime for assistance with Justice issues rather than Law enforcement officials.
I know this isn't always the case but if you look at allot of countries, it is.

Cool. He's a good guy. Wish I could do more of that now a days.
Heh, it was a long time ago... It is sometiems fun to remember those times. I probably looked pretty different then: without beard, even shorter hair, uniform and ~30 lbs less weight... And of course, so much testosterone that it was coming out from my ears :D
I think it was 1997 and comrad Mikhail was not a young man anymore, but I still remember his brain was razor-sharp back then.
They are trying to tighten gun laws in many European countries. Pro-gun people and companies have put lot´s of money to researches, to find out what is the situation with guns & crime all over the world.
Conclusion : "dead" things like guns have very little or nothing to do with crime rate. Guns do not get together and hunt down people themselves, they always need somebody to pull the trigger.
Main thing is peoples satisfaction - which can be split to poverty, unemployment and many other things. One big thing is people coming from other culture and who have difficulties to adapt.
Even weather can have noticeable effect on crime, much bigger than guns :)

I spoke briefly with an Isreali this weekend at BlasterBob's table at the Colo Spr Gun Show. He indicated that the crime rate in Isreal was similar to Switzerland - also because most folks have guns in their home.
