***UPDATE 09-04-10***
I'm getting the itch to go back to DMans for another night shoot. Maybe a couple weeks from now on a Friday night. Who's interested?

***UPDATE 08-03-10***
Night shoot date is scheduled for the 6th of August (Friday). The fee for shooting is $8 per person and the shoot will run from 6:30pm sharp to 9:00pm. Anyone wanting to attend feel free to show up without any prior coordinating with me but you must be there at approx. 6:30pm when Dragonman is going to take the fees. No one is permitted to enter after we all pay and head to the range. In addition to regular range gear I recommend you bring a flashlight/headlight and a couple glow sticks to attach to the targets (it looks cool shooting them too).

If you have any questions feel free to PM me and I hope to see you there.

If this works out I'm hoping to make a habit out of it.

Patrick

I was at Dragonman's today for some shooting and to sight in my new laser. I got to talking to Mel the owner about my afternoon's activities and he mentioned that he would be willing to allow me/us to come and shoot on his range after it was dark. The only stipulation is that he would do it if 5 or more people would commit to attending and we gave him a little notice.

I'm really interested in practicing in low light and I would like more trigger time with my laser mounted USP.

If anyone is interested or have any questions please let me know. He didn't mention a max amount of people. I'm good to go and hopefully my wife too.

For those who don't know Dragonman's range is located about 20 or so out east of Colorado Springs. Google or I will provide detailed directions if you need them. It will cost $10 per person. They are open from Tuesday to Sunday.

I'm not sure the proper location to put this thread in so if it needs to be moved sorry about that.

Only if it is a true night shoot. Star light/IR only. 200-500 yards would be nice. ;) I have only shot to 300 yards so far and would like to go past that with my PSL.

DM only has up to the 200 yard open, unless someone can talk him into letting you shoot out on the flats he owns. IR only would suck for some of us who don't have access nor can afford IR/NV.... as much fun as it would be.

I'd give it a go... no NV equipment or lasers, but that's OK.

Why not have a contest for the biggest fireball? Long rifle rounds in carbines and pistols can be something. BP guns also look cool.

Time to pull out the BFAEX w/magnesium... oh yeah. Sunglasses required, lol.

If you look at my picture, I could put up a good contest.

Maybe somebody has some of that Dragon's Breath shotgun ammo.

Think how much fun it would be to set up tannerite targets at 100 yards in the dark...

Jerrymrc,

I'm not sure but Dragonman may want to have a couple lights from the RSO shack on and so I think it will be more like low light shooting as apposed to no light shooting. I'm also not sure on this but will assume that he will open the 100 yard/pistol combo range close to his store so shooting 300 yards might be a no-go. I gave him the impression that the shoot would be more for close-up night sight and laser training as opposed to NV and IR rifle scope training. Next time I stop by I'll ask him for more details.

Chad,

I gave Dragonman the impression that the shoot would be for myself and others learning how to and training using night sights and lasers on low light conditions. Basically more training for those times when we check out the things that go bump in the night at our houses as opposed to being geared towards shooting scoped high powered rifles at 300 yards(although that would be sweet as I've never done that before).

Well I have at least 1 so far...just a couple more and we are golden.

Thanks everyone. I can't wait.

Tannerite is a binary explosive that reduces with water vapor only. Tannerite does not ignite with a "flash". Meaning, the "explosion" you see is just water vapor. If you were to shoot Tannerite in the dark, you wouldn't see anything.... but you'd hear the boom.

Well, heck. If it's on a Sat or Sun night count me in. I have a light/laser for the G19... but nothing for the long gun. Will he open the shoot house and the SF range for us to actually get "real world" training in clearing a house or are we just talking about command fire from a line? Either way, I think it might be fun.

With BigBear in for the night shoot I think we are now down to the planning phase. If we go for a Sat or Sun night I think the next available time for me is the weekend of the 7th of Aug. If that works with everyone I'll get with Dragonman the during the week prior to that weekend and see if that's cool with him.

If anyone has any questions or scheduling conflicts just let me know and we'll try to adjust as necessary.

Low light would be a good starting point. I have a couple of night sight pistols and a rifle with an illuminated reticle for low light.

Pending hearing back from ChadAmberg and his guest I think we can aim for the 7th of August. I think the backup date could be the 14th of August.

Once everyone has confirmed the 7th with me I'll give Dragonman a call and ask the questions y'all have asked me to pass along and get the date set.

I'll post any updates here for anyone else who would like to tag along (or you could just PM me with questions). The more the merrier and if the night shoot works out great maybe we could try to make a habit out of going once every couple months or so.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, I'm good for that date too.

One thing we may want to remember when planning this again in the future, is the phase of the moon, so we know when we will have some light.

Oh, here's a video of tannerite at night: http://il.youtube.com/watch?v=2nW9z8h8-lI&feature=related

BigBear
07-16-2010, 09:45
hmmm... did they mix anything with the Tannerite?

Cause as far as I know (which isn't much), with tannerite there should not be a huge flash. (Yes, I've used it A LOT) And do keep in mind that the video was recorded in slow-mo. So if there is a flash, it will be very quick, hence a "flash" and not an explosion... If you're working on night manevuers, that may not be a good thing since it'll impair your nightvision.

On the other hand... anytime someone gets to blow something up is a good time...

I would like some more info on what exactly is planned besides, "Let's get together at night and shoot stuff".

I would like some more info on what exactly is planned besides, "Let's get together at night and shoot stuff".

I spoke to Mel out at Dragonmans briefly this morning. He has no issues with doing it on the 7th of August. He did lower the price to $8 per person to attend the shoot. The shoot will be from 7pm to 9:30pm (sorry but no later than that because his neighbors will have problems). Also I checked a website online for sun info and read that sunset will be around 8:04pm so we'll have some time to set up/sight in lasers/scopes in daylight. His whole place will be open just for us (his words) and we'll be able to shoot the same weapons we've been allowed to shoot there before. Anyone can attend if they want to (even up until that night...just show up at 7pm and bring guns and ammo. He sells paper targets as well as ammo too. He does allow fully automatic weapons to be shot there.

I need to call him back 2 days before the 7th to reserve the range time.

BTW I'm not making a dime on this nor will 1 cent of money need to be passed through me. As soon as we get there we'll just pay him.

Hopefully that clears things up for anyone with questions. If not just PM me and I'll get back to you.

Thanks,

Patrick

UPDATE: Date changed to the 6th of August.

I need to reschedule the date of the night shoot from the 7th to the 6th of August. I got a chance to talk to Jim the RSO at DMans and he found out that my original plan of the 7th was no good because it's a Saturday night and any night shoots will only be from Tuesday night to Friday night. I figure most people who are interested in attending would go for Friday night over the other days.

If you have any questions feel free to let me know.

You should, then I'll bring the .308 out.

BTW... is there a place local to buy glow in the dark paint?

I was thinking buying some clays, painting them.... could be fun. I have a thrower.

Big Bear,

I think the best way to get a glow-in-the-dark target is to do is:

I plan to have some clays and will splatter them with some Chem-lite juice...

If I can find some cheapo ones at the dollar store or Wally World I'll pick up at least a dozen. You just cut them open and drip it onto the target (when I was a kid I use to cut them open and twirl them around my bedroom before turning out the lights...my mom hated that[ROFL1]).

Note to all that I have not asked DMan about shooting rifle tracers. I don't know if it will be allowed and I don't want anybody to get excited and then disappointed if he gives the no-go on shooting rifle tracers. I'll reiterate that when I asked him about doing a night shoot it was more for the purposes of training with night sights and laser/lights in low light conditions so bring whatever you want and we'll confirm with him what's kosher and what's not when we see him on Friday.

BTW Thanks Teamrico for jumping on board. I'm sure you will find it worthwhile. I think that brings us to around 10-11 people so far.

See ya there[UZI]

Also, if the chem-lights are cheap enough... could be interesting to just nail one in front of a pallet and aim for the chem light! I'm sure it will make pretty patterns all over when hit.

I found a 2 pack of Coleman ILUMISTICK at Walmart Online and it reads that some stores might have some available. The 2 pack goes for $2 online. I'm going to look for those and pick up a bunch. Other than that if someone finds them at another place feel free to let us know so others can check it out too.

No problem at all. I have the required minimum of 5 people covered already so you not going won't cause any issues.

Maybe next time if we deem it worthy enough to do it again. We'll see. I'm good on the thrower myself but thanks anyways for offering.

I would like to thank all who attended the night shoot. I think that we all agree that the night shoot was a blast and that it was worth it. I'll give a brief description about what we did and how the shoot went for those who may be curious.

We all arrived for shoot about 10 mins before 6:30pm and introduced ourselves to one another. At 6:30pm when Mel arrived we went inside the shop to pay and pick up targets and ammo. Mel gave us permission to pick which range we wanted to shoot at (we chose the pistol/100 yard range because no one brought any 30-06 or .308 type rifles and it was closer). We headed down to the range to get all of our gear and targets set up as well as show each other our weapons. After about a half hour later we kicked off the shooting and all was great. Once it hit about 20 mins after sunset (which was about 8pm) we brought out the chem lights and got the range set up for night shooting. We stapled some of the chem lights up to the pallets so we could shoot at them and stuck some in the berm as well. At about 8:30pm it was pretty dark and we were in full swing for the night shoot. We shot with the lasers and tactical lights in almost perfect no light conditions for about half hour. It was great training. After my wife shot about 2 mags worth of ammo she gave up because her pistol had no night sights or laser/lights and she couldn't see her target good enough or shoot it accurately. I think she got the point of why I wanted to bring her out there at night. I had a blast shooting my USP9 with the Viridian green laser/light combo. I tried to hit targets with my P2000 (has night sights but no laser/lights) and found that aiming with those sights were difficult for me.

In conclusion I think the shoot was worth it. I had low expectations going in because it was the first time we have tried this and I didn't want to get disappointed but the shoot exceeded my expectations. I was able to meet with some great forum members (thanks again for going) and my wife and the buddy I bought really enjoyed themselves as well. Mel was happy to have us and allowed us to go and do our own thing without any intervention. We had no safety issues/problems between us. Everyone was very safety-minded and mindful of one another. The weather was awesome. It was a cool evening with no rain and no wind. I wish I would have brought some bug spray because as soon as the sun went down the mosquitos came out. I will try to organize this again in about a month or so and the good thing is that the sun will start to go down even earlier by then. I hope to get more people interested by then and have a bigger group of forum members.

If anyone has any questions about the shoot just let me know and I'll be happy to answer. I'll try to schedule another shoot in about 3 more weeks and see if anybody wants to join us.

Have a good weekend,

Patrick

I am sorry I ended up not being able to go. I'm really hoping my wife's medical issues clear up enough for me to go next time.

When you were able to hit the chemlights, was it obvious that you had hit one and you could see the splatter? Or did it just get too dim to see at night?

Did anyone use reactive targets or even the shoot-n-see style targets that were viewable in the darkness?

Chad,
If we shot the chem light in the center it would splatter no prob but when someone just winged it would just run down the target. We could see it no prob after the sun went down. The green, orange, yellow, and pink colors worked the best I think. It was pretty cool to see them blow up. None of us had any reactive targets or anything besides the paper and clay pigeons.

TeamRico,

Thanks for posting some pics of the night shoot.

For anybody who was curious in the 3rd and 4th pic you can tell how good the chem lights glow and that they make great targets once the sun goes down.

Correct me if I'm wrong TeamRico but those night pics were taken around 8:30pm and we were able to shoot in those light conditions until 9pm.
