first, my computer died. along with my itunes library. i just got an ipod last year. i thought that stuff was for you whipper snappers. but, i found it is good, for me. i downloaded all the old songs you dont hear on the radio, plus put my family cds on there. but the computer crashed, jerrymrc is sending me the cable to hook my hard drive to the new computer with. so maybe, i can save it all. but, today, i was trying to get the songs put on my moms computer, and deleted all the content. i know there are pay services to pull up the deleted files. i found a bunch of them today. is there a free way? or a way you recommend that costs? i am looking at copytrans.com right now. thanks again. you geeks, i mean guys have been a lifesaver. thanks again.
oh and yes, i know, i am a dumbass.
I've done this same kind of crap too many times to count. Don't know now that they've all been wiped but I can say when you get everything back, back it up.....often
If you have that cable en route you should be able to recover everything much simpler. Just browse to (Assigned usb drive letter):\Documents & Settings\(username)\ for xp or (Assigned usb drive letter):\Users\(username)\ for Vista/Win7.
iTunes stuff is located in the music\iTunes folder. I wouldn't worry about anything unless that fails.

Another iPod question - I built a new computer & the iPod won't take it as it's new home computer, even though the password & user ID is okay. What am I doing wrong?

the ipod is currently tied to an "Account" not a computer
if the computer you are connecting it to has a different library, it will tell you that you might lose songs unless you "transfer Purchases"
ie:
Computer A Has Pink Floyd "the wall"
I Sync my ipod
Computer B on same account does NOT have Pink Floyd "the wall".
IF I Sync I will lose that album from the ipod unless I "Transfer purchases" first.
you can ONLY transfer purchases from one computer to another using the same itunes account. otherwise you get the error "This computer isn't authorized to play this media"
hope that helps, if not, call me tomorrow

IF he doesnt do a full import of WMAs, MP3s, etc etc it might keep the dir in the library and he would also have to recover the WMA, MP3, etc from its root Location
If you've already authorized your computer in iTunes (Store/Authorize), you may just need to associate the iPod with the new pc. When you have it plugged in, on the left hand side of iTunes beneath devices, select your iPod and choose the info tab. Once checked on this it'll be your new authority. It'll most likely prompt you and verify that you're replacing an older authoritative computer first.
I hope I didn't misunderstand your question. I'm sure there are others with far more experience on the matter here than I.

there is a ton of pay software to recover the data online. but, if you need to get the songs off ipod onto your computer, I found a bunch of free software as well. idump.com allows you to send your ipod songs to your hard drive, so you dont lose them when you resync to a new computer. (like I did) there is a ton of tutorials on youtube as well.

recuva.com is my new friend. i got all my songs back. now, i have to arrange them all back like I had them, and upload them to the mp3 player, bypassing the stupid itunes to do it. and it was a free download from filehippo
