Have been considering a new pistol for hog hunting. We hunt thick and swampy areas with dogs and carrying a rifle is a pain. I have a Glock 22 and 23 C and have used them but they are sometimes a little under powered without good shot placement, which is a little tough when a 400 pound hog with 6 " razor sharp tusks is charging you. I mentioned a 10mm to my gunsmith and he recomended the 45 GAP. What do you guys think? I have a high powered revolver but prefer more than 5 shots in this situation.
There are only a couple of reasons I can think of that your gun smith told you to get a 45 GAP to hunt pigs.
1. He has never shot or read anything about a 10mm.
2. He has a 45 GAP he wants to get rid of.
From what I can tell a 45 GAP is basically a 45 ACP "short". It was developed to fit a 45 caliber bullet in a 9mm action. The case is actually slightly shorter than a 9mm do to bullet girth. Even the full size 45 ACP is good for what it was designed for, stopping people, but not a charging hog. Get the Glock 20 and a couple of longer after market barrels, some Double Tap ammo and you won't be disappointed. This guy has one thing right he wants you to buy a Glock.

there is another possibility, this guy has never hunted wild pigs! they go down hard, and usually very close 10mm works, with real 10mm loads, not the 40 sw equivalent-FBI type loads, anothe good one would be 45 Win mag, if you can find one, also a DE in 44 mag , anything(aint much out there) in 50AE, or a wheel gun 41, 44 , stiff 45lc , 454 , I guarantee the Boar will come at you with everything he can muster, you should do the same, by the way I have a 7"bbl Wyo Arms Parker 10mm for sale , it is listed, it would certainly do the job

don't worry so much about the tusks, worry about broken legs, the short, fat ,fast bastards hit hard and low!, seen big dogs with their ribcages crushed by them, kinda scary!, when do we go?

+1
Your gunsmith doesn't know what he is talking about.

get int the brush with a 3-400 lb Black tooth Russian bore(or any feral hog). some say that it is the most dangerous hunting in the US, yes, even more than bearof the dozen I have shot, none has fallen more than 15 feet from my feet, it is usually not a matter of how many shots it will take, it is how many you use, took 2 shots on a 325 lb'er, Federal 180grain 44mag hollow points, neither 2 inches from the heart, the first would probably have killed,'in a while, meanwhile he is pissed off ,and i am the target, so I shoot again, , they usually take 1 shot, and charge , not run off to die

+ another 1. I have a Glock 20 with a 6" Storm Lake barrel for this very purpose. A .45 GAP doesn't come close to the energy from a 10mm. I considered a .41 and .44 Mag also, but why limit yourself to 6 shots when you can have 15, and a faster reload. A wounded hog can kill you, so the more firepower the better as far as I'm concerned.
Take a look at the Tanfoglio Hunter (http://www.eaacorp.com/handguns-hunting-pistols-hunter-EI.html) in 10mm......6" barrel & 15+1 .....and you can swap top ends/barrels/calibers quite inexpensively imho. Buy some Double Tap ammo or load to mimic/approach their performance claims...you will love it! My Delta Elite also does a nice job....but was way more $$ to hotrod recoil springs/trigger/grips etc. to fit my fetish....and it feels bigger to my hand even though it is a single stack with 8+1. Right now I am running a Tanfoglio Match and a Limited Pro is on the way....

I know it's an older thread. What are the rules for magazines with semi auto pistols. I've looked all over the Colorado dow and saw the energy at 50 yards. Can I pack a full mag, or do I have to put in a 'plug' like my shotgun?

There are no capacity restrictions for handgun hunting for big game in Colorado. The requirement is 6mm or greater caliber, expanding bullet, 550 ft lbs at 50 yards (which roughly means that most .357 Magnums do not qualify).
I thought that was the case. just confirming. I'm guessing this loop hole may get closed someday.

No, I don't think anyone considers much of a "loophole".
A full steam 10mm load out of a 6" barrel packs a pretty good punch. Tough to beat unless you want to go to more "exotic" semi auto cartridges (ie 475 Wildey, 50 AE). I find full steam 10mm loads in my g29 w/ 4.4" barrel to be very manageable for quick follow up shots. All that said, bullets are not death rays, this is especially true with handgun rounds in general. If you need a quick close quarter stop on an angry tusker I think you'll need to put a lead pill right on the money with a solid CNS hit....However, I think the 10mm is perhaps one of the coolest semi auto rounds out there!!!!

Buffalo Bore makes great dangerous game/defensive loads for a host of rifle and pistol calibers. I'll be using some on my texas hog hunt this year out of the 45-70.

Any succcess with a 10mm on deer
I killed a 550 pound cow elk with one shot at 80 yards with a Razorback 1911 (10mm), so I think deer would be fine.
