View Full Version : scope advice needed
I shot the Pueblo Tac Rifle today (poorly) and ran one stage with a friends gun with a Leupold Mark 4 1-3x14mm CQ/T and really liked it.
So the question is this, any recommendations for a scope on an AR, 1-3 or 1-4 (perhaps fixed). Want to shoot 50-500yds, which 3x or 4x will do fine for me.
I would like to have a good quality but keep the price down. I have a cheap 6x UTG and it was worthless today, moved all over the place.
Ive been looking at the leupold mark AR 1.5-4x20.
ETA: Can be found for well under $300 new.

Both Burris and Weaver make 1-4x scopes that work pretty well for that kind of shooting and you won't have to sell a kidney for them.
The leupold 1.5-5 is an excellent choice. You can find them for under $450 new and under $350 used.
Zero it at 200-300 and your off to the races.

Dont overlook Nikon- great glass for a good price.
Bottom line when looking at optics:
Forget what the name on the side of it says- Get what works for YOUR eyes and application.

Vortex Viper PST is another to consider but it is right on the edge of your budget ($499). Expect you'll need to be patient since these are tough to come by.
+1 on the Leupold Mark AR. Talked to Leupold and they will make a custom turret for you tailored to the weight of the bullet you fire if you aren't shooting 55 grain bullets. They quoted $60 to me for 69gr turrets.
Scope advice: have proper eye relief... getting kissed by the scope hurts! Ask my BIL. HAHA.
Anyone carry the Leupold line in Denver or COS? Would like to take a look before I buy.

Speciality Sports in Colorado Springs has a great Leupold selection. Looked at the Markk 4 and Mark AR line a couple of weeks ago, plus they had the Nikon M-223 available as well. One of the largest scope selections I've seen in a store. Pricing wasn't bad either.
OK, so I have looked at a bunch of options and I think I have it own to 2 options.
Option 1 for about $800 is an ACOG TA01-NSN
Option 2 for about $900 is Leupold M4 1.5-5x20mm MR/T M@ with LaRue QD Mount
I plan to use on a 16in AR but may want to use it on a DMPS LR308 Tac20 down the road.
Opinions?

If I was selecting, I'd go with Option 2. Never could make the transition from an EOTech to the ACOG.
I'm working on a similar setup for my LR-308 but going with a 2.5-10x24 scope and mounting a mini-red dot sight for close in.

Either one will work.
I vote ACOG even though I tried to use TA-11s for over a year and couldnt get used to them at close range.
I'd go for the Burris 1-4 XTR. It has the Gen 2 5.56 reticle. And illumination.

I too am looking very hardly at both of the scopes you mentioned, what did you like or dislike about these scopes? Which would you choose between the two?

Gander Mountain in Denver on Grant St. just south of 104th carries them, they even have a couple of ACOG's if you'd like to take a look at those as well.
vortex viper pst 1-4 for the win. but im biased, i love vortex optics.
