View Full Version : Paralysis by analysis

I saw the following on a link that SA Friday posted and thought it really brought to light some feelings I've had recently. I'm not the world's best shooter or smartest man, but some things do get irritating. It'll be followed by some off topic ramblings about going "too" in-depth and freezing up.

Enjoy:

Dear Armchair Commando,

If you could break away from building that shrine to John Moses Browning, I would like to ask you a few questions.

1. Why in the hell do you care what gun/caliber I shoot? If it's not for you - fine, but why must you ALWAYS bitch about it? What possible stake do you have in my choices? Am I your personal bodyguard? Did it ever occur to you that my needs and priorities might differ from yours? I doubt it, but that doesn't stop you from droning on ad nauseum, spewing forth your worthless "knowledge" about how my gun/caliber is inaccurate, ineffective, or regurgitating whatever straw man argument you read in Guns and Ammo last month. GIVE IT A REST!!! I'd be scared shitless to a have Rob Leatham come after me with a .25 Auto, but I'm not sure I'd bother running if I saw you with a GE minigun. (I've seen you shoot. You're pathetic - even off a benchrest.)

2. Do you own any other clothing color other than camouflage? What gives? Is "The Enemy" in town for the weekend? Are you in the witness protection program? The GI Joe look was out by 1983. Get with the program. If you think you're reducing your visibility, think again. You could be wearing a Ghillie suit and I could still spot your fat ass 500 yards away. By the way, the KaBar hanging off the web gear makes you look even dumber.

3. What is up with your fascination about killing people? It's "kill...kill...kill," morning, noon, and night. Get help!!! It is NOT healthy. Can't you just enjoy shooting as a contest of skill once in a while?

4. What is with your obsession over trade rag "ballistics?" It's always the same tired crap: "....Stopping Power....Knockdown Power....Firepower...Terminal Ballistics....blah blah blah...." How many goddamn times can you read the same article and have the same conversation? Hey, stupid!!! It's all BULLSHIT!!!! It's all about ability. I don't care what the marketing people say; one can't buy talent. Quit trading the cow for magic bullets, accept reality and get over it.

5. Let's talk literacy. You're not doing the shooting sports any intellectual favors any time you write an article or make a post with the world's most atrocious spelling and grammar. (God forbid I should err here...) Get a dictionary - then OPEN it. Learn the difference between "their" and "they're" for crying out loud. You're just one more reason the media regards all gun owners as twits.

6. Why do you treat everyone of a non-white race or different nationality like total shit whenever they come to the range? Good God, man!! They don't want to steal your job or your barbecue; they just want to live the American dream. After living, oppressed, in some backward, f'ed up banana republic, newcomers want to be secure in their persons and homes. That equals gun ownership!! Immigrants and minorities aren't our enemies - they're our allies. Get over your prejudices. Welcome them!

Finally, I would just like to make one suggestion: If you can't seem to find a way to participate in the shooting sports in a positive, constructive and inclusive manner, why not just get hell out and leave the rest of us alone? I know that we need to show solidarity right now, but frankly, I'm willing to give the gun-rights trip a go without you. Let me know if you're interested & I'll pass the hat and we'll do a little gun-buyback program of our own.

Disgruntledly Yours,

Eric *Taken from <http://www.ericwesselman.com/hate_commandos.html (http://www.ericwesselman.com/hate_commandos.html)>

"Paralysis by analysis" is a saying that we've used in the music world for quite some time. There comes a point when all the training, prepping, practicing, and whatever else one can do to prepare for an event won't help any longer. There is a time where you step onto the stage and you just have to do it, or fail. There is nothing wrong with failing as a smart person can and will learn from their failings. However, there could be something wrong with having to be perfect in every aspect of your art....

In relation to firearms and training: In a real world situation, you probably won't have time to sit down, get comfy, make sure your cheeck weld is good, turn your hat around, readjust your shirt, make sure your right hand is over your left, feet apart, blah, blah, blah... You train so that things are subconciously and reflexive. You shouldn't have to think about it....

Don't know what I'm trying to say. I ran across this:

"Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you. He is training with minimum food or water, in austere conditions, day and night. The only thing clean on him is his weapon. He doesn't worry about what workout to do---his rucksack weighs what it weighs, and he runs until the enemy stops chasing him. The True Believer doesn't care 'how hard it is'; he knows he either wins or he dies. He doesn't go home at 1700; he is home. He knows only the 'Cause.'"

and it just made me think of the common internet commando dude who knows some stuff but can't walk it. Course, y'all don't know me or my ability so I could just be talking out my butt...

Maybe I just wanted another post.

Lol, bottom line: Try to put the technicalities out of your mind and have some fun at the range every now and then.

No Stag, it wasn't directed towards anyone in particular... Just an attitude vibe I've been picking up recently. Just needed a readjustment and a little fine tuning.

F**K this guy and everything else he writes.

Where does he get-off on assuming that firearms-owners are prejudice? The above remark just shows that the author (the original author, not BigBear) is a prejudiced bigot.

FWIW, I don't know a single firearms owner that has an issue with legal immigration.

I can attest that I've seen the attitude come up (not here in CO though). I'm a white guy, but back in texas I have a friend who is a HUGE black dude. When I'd meet him at the range, you could see people physically relax when the white guy (me) showed up to "help out" the black dude (my friend).

I don't know any firearm owners who have an issue with legal immigration either. I believe the section you are quoting can be taken out of context if you won't read it with sarcasm... I don't think the original author was stating that only whites could have guns, etc.

I agree that (unfortunately) the attitude is present among the occasional shooter, but I would say to a much lesser extent than I see it among the general population.

Still, I do appreciate you posting info; it was pretty hilarious until that #6...

And the beer hat with the straws, that's cool too, right? Frankly, if I have to give up the wife beater AND that, I'm just going to skydive with a drink umbrella instead of a parachute.

Nope, you can't have the straw hat... it's been updated to the construction helmet with beercan holders and a drinking tube.

Eric was a pretty regular poster on the BE.com forum. He can be, uh, a little passionate [Tooth]. Not that anyone here has ever gotten in that state in threads on this site, especially not me.

#6 is something I haven't witnessed in the ranges around here, but when I was living in MD, it happened. Eric isn't commenting about legal and illegal immigration, but more so commenting on some of the funny looks some of his non-white fellow competition shooters have gotten at ranges during matches.

I do camp and shoots quite a bit (almost every weekend, every two or three in the winter) and always pick spots with good defensibility because you never know what kind of twits will crawl out of the woodwork in the high country with nobody around. Especially in winter where I'll be the only one camping at 10,000 feet. It's good to keep those skills honed, though, but you really do need to be ever vigilant. Even with the wildlife out there, if you have your ears on and are shooting you're not going to hear something creeping around, that damn squirrel might just be packing heat... you don't know!
