These guys just escaped from prison, and could be armed. I am parked at Loves truck stop in Joseph City (I-40 eastern AZ) for the night so we'll see if they come asking for trouble..... Oh yeah and its a federal offense to carry any sort of weapon in my truck, so all the tools are locked up back at home, except a crooked hammer I use to thump tires with. Yeah, it's gonna be a long night. Hopefully they are smart criminals and headed south....

As far as I know, there is no federal statute that would prohibit carrying a handgun in your truck simply because it's a commercial vehicle. You'd still be subject to the laws of the state you are in and other federal laws (such as carrying into or on a federal facility, military base, etc...). You would also be subject to any rules of your employer.
So, for example, if you have a CO concealed handgun permit and operate your own rig, you can carry concealed in your truck anywhere your CO permit is recognized and where carry is legal. If you drive for a company, their policy might prohibit carry. But federal law doesn't other than what would normally apply to any permit holder.
Watch out for yourself.

And I believe its fine to transport a firearm in a case with ammo seperate in pretty much any state.
That's one night I would "break the law" though, for sure.

Federal Motor Carrier Safety Rules and Regs prohibit the carry of a firearm in a commercial vehicle.
Also you cant have any alcohol in the cab either, opened or unopened it doesn't matter.
Its a whole different set of rules.

You got it man. FMCSR is a shitty little book of reality. I've heard lots of horror stories about gestapo DOT officers at weigh stations. I've been lucky so far, but man it's pretty ridiculous. The left wingers have this industry by the balls, and its freaking sad. The global warming hoax and liberal government emissions standards literally put Caterpillar out of the trucking business. As of 2009 or 2010 I believe, they do not make truck engines anymore, because they couldn't keep up with emissions while maintaining decent fuel economy. As for the guns, yeah cant have them at all as far as I know. I must admit I have never read the FMCSR cover to cover, I don't think I would have the stomach for it. Plus, my company wont allow weapons of any kind in the truck anyway. I actually asked one time "So if gang bangers or terrorists try to take my truck loaded with 44,000lbs of level 1 explosives, I'm supposed to just let them have it?" And the guy (Texan, by the way) says "yeah just be a good witness and wait for the police" mmmmmm kay buddy. [Stooge]

my dad is a truckdriver and every week he goes to tx or az, a couple months ago he was parked in a bad neighborhood waiting to unload in tx and a couple cops pulled up and were bs'ing with him. When he asked about the hood he was in their response was "you have a gun right?" He has carried for 30 plus years in his truck.
I just seen you are greeley, you may drive for the same company as my dad leases to.

Well, I've searched the entire FMCSA Rules/Regs and I can't find a prohibition on the carrying of personally owned firearms. I can find a reg that prohibits loaded firearms as part of cargo but that wouldn't apply to a personally carried handgun.
I did find this to support my assertion:

# 14 Question: Can a commercial truck driver carry a firearm in his/her rig?
Answer: There is no federal law concerning commercial truck drivers and firearms. If you have the proper Permits/License and can legally carry in the state you are driving in or that state allows the carrying of firearms without a permit you are legal. Click Here (see the link below) to read letter from Office of Hazardous Materials Standards that firearms do not fall under hazardous materials in commercial vehicles.

In researching this, I can't find anyone who can link to the actual FMCSA rule/reg that prohibits personal carry. I'd be grateful if one of you guys could provide one.
Now, I would be really surprised to hear of a trucking company that actually allowed their employees to carry in their trucks. But company policy isn't law.
One of them just got caught in Rifle.

No problem. I'd want to know, too, if I was on OTR driver. No sense in going without a means of personal protection if you don't have to. And I'm sure your 1911 will enjoy a little road trip once in a while!

After a buddy of mine (not a trucker just on the road) was attacked at a rest stop I would never go unarmed. Luckily he had a couple pits in the backseat...

I wasnt sure on the OTR commercial vehicles, I drive a commercial vehicle everyday and I had the sheriffs dept make sure there was nothing but company policy against carrying in the vehicle.
