I was watching Top Shot last week and I have seen the discussions about the show on other threads and I don’t want to rehash old hash. I found the knife throwing segment fascinating, does anybody know where I can get quality information on equipment, how to get started etc.

Now now-OP said he got the idea from Top Shot-nothing to do with unemployment, gay rights, immigration reform, economy, etc. etc. politicians and knife catching [Beer]
SKS spike bayos are decent throwers and cheap.
I just Hulued that episode of TS. There is WAY too much drama in these shows. Interesting that they all threw with the handle.

I spent many, many hours throwing all variations of edged weapons in my younger days. It is a great hobby and if you have kids they will love it. I made quite a few out of leaf springs, very easy to do-just draw it out on the spring and cut it out. It doesn't have to be pretty or uber heat treated-it is going to get dinged up. A bench grinder is about all the finish work you need. Edit the drawing until you achieve a "Neutral" balance-that is until it balances equally in the middle so you can throw by either the handle or the blade. Go find a big cross section of tree trunk at least 2' in diameter (Know any tree trimmers?) and go nuts. Have some sort of backstop to keep the blade in your yard when you bounce it.
It is one of those things that is easy to learn, but takes a long time to master.
You will learn that for odd numbers of spins-you throw by the blade-1/2 spin-1 1/2 spin etc.
Even-throw by the handle-1 spin-2 spin etc.
Tomahawks- Cutting edge forward for even number of spins and the handle will be pointing down.
Cutting edge backwards for odd number of spins and the handle will be pointing up.

Man I am watching the show again now. After seeing it and this thread I am wanting to get some knives and tomahawks now. I use to throw knives back in the day.

Sheet rock or shingle hatchets are good and cheap substitutes for tomahawks and draw less unwanted attention from LEOs when found in your truck beside your tool belt.
