View Full Version : Lantern suggestions
I have an old (1950's) Dietz Comet that I love. I would like to get a few more lanterns. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I see the new Dietz lanterns are dirt cheap and made in China. Are they worth trying?
How about fuels other than kerosene? What are the pros and cons of the other fuels?

I like the Coleman dual fuels just because they are dual fuels. I'm not sure if your looking for regular camping or backpacking though. [Beer]
I like the tri fuels myself because that's what my mini stove is so I've already got it packed anyway. The fewer fuels and crap I have to pack the better.

Tri-fuel ?? Have I been out of the camping loop that long [ROFL1]
The snow peak giga fuel is about the best dual I've used.

MMMMM I see that under 25 degrees it's iffy ? I do a lot of winter camping and that would be a big minus.

I would totally disagree. I've used that stuff at 12-13,000 feet in sub zero weather and been fine.

I was going by info on fuel canisters on REI site. That said I would go by your real life experience over the info on REI. [Beer]
Boils water like an S.O.B., I can get my little 4 cup peculator going in about 5 minutes - perfect for those cold mornings to just reach outside my tent door, fire up the stove and wait all snug and comfy in my sleeping bag.

If you are going propane get a Coleman Northstar they are super bright. You might find it at Walmart run about $60. I've got two they are awesome. Propane lanterns are hard to beat unless you are going to be up high.
Coleman does sell a two mantle dual fuel lantern. I've got an old single mantle dual fuel lantern which has never been used. Its a SHFT lantern but I have enough propane stored to last several weeks.
