View Full Version : P-51 in the air ?

Did I take too many beer, or is it possible I saw P-51 Mustang in the air today over Longmont, CO ?
Long nose, loud & mean engine sound, wing at lower level, going very fast compared to Cessna´s, doing tight turn in the air etc.
Or any ideas, what it might have been ?

Just interested :)

You too huh, I though I was having issues but they have been flying them around the Loveland airport for about a week. Very cool to see them or the B-24 low and fast around Windsor.

airshow coming in a couple weeks. might be practice runs, and it could be the fighter pilot for a day people cruising around.

I found this online for the Airshow August 28 & 29 http://www.cosportaviation.org/

You can also fly in a B-29....anybody got $995 laying around?

I didn't see the mustang, but I saw a P-47 Thunderbolt. The cool thing about those old planes is you hear them well before you see them coming.

2 years ago we were working on the runways at that little airport on the north west end of the metro area, can't remember it's name. Anyways, over the noise of the equipment I heard something very cool, looked up ant it was a B-17!!! VERY low level flyby, I'd say less than 20', he made a tight turn and landed on the runway right next to us. Awesome!
That same summer we had a crew at Ft. Carson, making the hot re-fuel pads, I was still at the airport who's name escapes me, my nextel beeped, one of the guys down at Carson just watched 2 V-22 Ospreys hot fuel, he was pretty impressed. A few minutes later they landed next to our equipment, dropped of a couple people then took off and headded north.
Centennial airport is where the MiG-15 lives, I met the guy who owns it, says he is working on a F-86 Sabre. Must be nice to have that kind of cash.

I've seen two flights of two Osprey's over Pueblo West... we're just south of Carson's maneuver range; Blackhawk, Chinook, and Apache are pretty common around here.

I will be bringing one of our Hurks to the JeffCo Airshow at the end of the month. At least right now I am on the schedule to be on it. Not sure though. Good deals like that normally go to management types.

Another reason you might be seeing more old warbirds flying around is the Reno Air Races are coming baby. Cant wait.

There's a wealthy lawyer that owns a gorgeous P-51 Mustang and a Hawker Sea Fury, both are hangared at Centennial airport. The P-51 is in warbird colors, but the Sea Fury is civilian painted. It has a big radial engine and it's very fast, and the wing is shaped just like a P-47's, so it's easy to mistake it for a P-47. I thought that's what it was for years, it flys over Parker frequently, until I found out the facts.

I'm really looking forward to going to see Fifi, the B-29. Ain't gonna ride in it though. This is supposed to be it's first airshow since a major rebuild and all new engines. Only one left flying in the world. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLFKAWGSPCs

Don't know where he hangars it, but a Doctor (was Chief Anesthesiologist at Children's last I heard) who used to be our Medical Squadron commander owns a P-51 that wears the name "Stang Evil" around here; it was one of the P-51's assigned to the 140th here in Denver back in the day. He also has a British Gnat, and last I heard he's got an Me-109 that was brought out of Russia needing restoration.

Well folks, if you have not already heard... ENOLA GAY...yes the B29 that nuked Hiroshima, is coming our way sometime this month, up in Longmont. May have changed since I first got word this spring. There are 3 B29s that are "potentially" flyable right now: FIFI/DOC/ENOLA GAY. Doc was rebuilt by Boeing in Kansas and FIFI has of course been flying for years with the CAF. ENOLA GAY was supposed to make a "one-way" flight to CA this summer with many stops and be trucked back to the Smithsonian. It has been under a "secret" rebuild while on the floor of the museum for the past 10 years.

a guy down at KAPA has one, or at least did a few years ago when i was flying out of there. beautiful plane.

here is my video over at a private airfield on the east side of brighton. I got invited by the judge who gave me my first ever airplane ride in his bonanza V-tail!

you can see how close I was to the runway.

if you have ever been to a top fuel drag race and sat pretty close to the track, that is about the only thing that I can use to describe the feeling that goes through your chest....I imagine that is what it would be like if the doctors had to shock your chest.

I believe that Mig-17 is owned by one of our retired pilots, although I can't remember his name at the moment. He used to fly doing mock dogfights with another of our pilots who had an F-86, until the gent who flew the F-86 misjudged his altitude and pancaked at an airshow a few years ago.

And I think that Enola Gay tour was actually an April Fool's thing. It would be cool, no doubt, but I don't think it'll happen. And sadly, last I heard, FIFI was grounded awaiting new engines. I bet it happens, though.

For what it's worth, if you're ever down in Pueblo the airport here has a museum with a B-29 in really excellent shape. They have "open cockpit days" usually a couple times a year where you can actually climb inside it. I shot video and took a bunch of pics. Pretty amazing.

We were watching that show on Saturday before he burned in on Sunday. Truely a sad event.
On a sidenote-we used to watch the airshows from the CDOT shed that was on the east side of Wadsworth. It was pretty cool to be on the top of the dome for salt/sand and watch. One time when the Angels or similar were practicing a couple of days before we were watching from there and they were pulling pylon turns. We could see straight into the cockpit as they were banking.
Horsepower............

But I do have a love for the warbirds. The epitome of piston power. Always had a love for the B-17 and the Mustang, Jug and Lightning. My mom grew up in Nebraska and had Lightenings buzz her town during WWII. She still gets a smile when she mentions it.
The last time we were @ Jeffco I got some cool video of this old gal:

Why not head on in and walk around? $15.00 per adult when tickets are ordered online.

Reminds me of the time I was pulling static display in Germany at a Fest. A little German kid and his father came up, and the kid wanted to sit in my OH-58. I helped him inside, and sat him in the pilots seat. He started asking about the instruments, so I turned on the battery.

When the Attitude Indicator started spooling up and righting itself, the kid got a little nervous. He thought we were taking off.

The icing on the cake was when I reached up and turned on the windscreen defog/blower motors. The kid came unglued and scrambled the best he could out of the cockpit, balling his eyes out screaming for Pappy!

Daddy wasn't too happy with the American........[Dunno]

I was told they always have hot girls down there, so for my first solo X-ctry i wanted to go to pueblo, my instructor agreed and i planned to go to flower.
