Theres gotta be a 1911 expert on here that can help you out. I would say theres a spring in there thats bad. (The one that holds it down till the empty mag pushes it up). Should be an easy fix.

Slide stop needs to be replaced.
There could be a few things wrong.
You might be hitting the slide stop and knocking it up on recoil.
Is it wet with oil? Both the slide rails and barrel locking recesses in the slide?
Does it have a full length guide rod? If it does, make it lock open then try to wiggle the guide rod. If it slams closed then that is your problem.
If it still isnt working right, get it a real gunsmith before you snap off the barrel feet of shear off a locking lug or two.
Probable causes are:
Using a high hold that causes you to bump the slide stop during recoil.
Try a lower hold as an experiment.
The slide stop being a bit long (on the inside) and the round is bumping it up.
Why the third or fourth round. As ammo is loaded in the mags the bullet is progressively lower in the front of the mag when full vs the first round or second round, etc.
Third, the slide stop may need a small (very small) divit where the plunger contacts it to keep it from freely moving under recoil. This is particularly true of extended slide stops or weak plunger springs.
