Gross picture at bottom.
The story is the poster's brother works with the guy that did this. I guess they are both fireman. Anyway, this guy was packing up his stuff to leave, picked up his 12 gauge, pumped it three times (thinking about the hunting plug). Set it down, wiped it down, picked it back up, aimed at the floor between his legs and pulled the trigger. Took most of the shot (I think bird shot) in the left foot. At first doctors said they might have to amputate it. I guess the guy was screaming about the pain so much that he was begging them to take it off anyway.
A few days later, the docs took the foot off below the knee. Poor guy. As per the usual internet standard, everyone on there just lamented about how stupid they think the guy is. I feel bad for him.

Oh yeah, and I thought it hurt when the diving board smacked me in the top of the foot today and made me bleed.

Man!!! That is an "accident" I hope I never have happen or even have to see in person!
I just unloaded my shotgun tonight, a few hours before reading this thread. I distinctly remember using the same method to unload the gun, but specifically checking that the chamber AND magazine were empty; more than once. In fact, I checked the gun each time I picked it up. I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I guess I've developed the appropriate habit and am glad that I did.
break the four rules and pay the price.
I don't feel bad for him.

OUCH!! That sucks something fierce. I have a friend in AZ who unloaded his shotgun before cleaning it. Or so he thought . . . . He had it resting on the floor between his legs pointed at the ceiling. BOOMSTICK! He blew a hole in roof. Lucky SOB right there.

I'm sure your reverse Louganis did hurt. Just nothing like this poor dude's foot. I can't imagine . . . .
You know, I know accidents can happen to anyone but you generally only get one chance to get something like this wrong, it's worth being very careful at the risk of being overly careful to ALWAYS check the pipe no matter how empty you think it is. The thing that gets me is that he pointed it between his legs and pulled the trigger, I wouldn't really consider THAT a safe direction. I feel for him, but that wasn't his shining hour.

Since when do you pull the trigger to see if a gun is loaded ??
Since when do you pull the trigger to see if a gun is loaded ??
That's what I was thinking!!! [Beer]
He probably just (not) unloaded it and pulled the trigger to reset the spring since he pumped it so there wasn't any tension on the fireing pin... eh, who knows.

Must be one of those new fangled unloadin and checks systems.
I don't like the new ones much. I prefer to Unload the weapon, physically and visually verify the weapon is unloaded and then STILL treat it as if it might go off.
It's worked for 33 years.

Yeah Stu ... mebby you shoulda tagged the subject line with some sort of warning

Isn't that what you are supposed to do? You're supposed to cycle it several times and then ask a buddy to look down the barrel while you pull the trigger to see if anything odd has happened. If you are by yourself (this isn't easy by yourself), then you point it at your foot so you can 'feel' if anything is wrong with the barrel. You guys are SO amateur!
play stupid games and win stupid prizes.
I don't feel bad for the guy other than now he has to live without a lower leg the rest of his life, go through therapy, maybe get an artificial leg, and learn to walk again.
I am still curious why they removed the foot, I have seen worse stuff on television shows or internet articles where the person kept their limb/hand etc. maybe he took out enough that it would have just been a dead foot and not functioned.
the positive side of this is it is another story for all of us to follow the rules no matter what level experience we have and not to dumb shit when we know better
Now we can all pay for his disability while he sits at home and collects guns on our dime.[Bang]
Sorry about the no warning. I'll move the picture to the bottom of the post and ad a warning at the top.

Sweet. Anyone hungry for sushi?
On a side note: Stu - my memory is HORRIBLE. Did we already take note of the fact that you moved from GMKIA to Zombie Slayer?
Ummm, I think so. I honestly never really paid attention to the title. I think either you, Bigbear, or Troublco, or someone pointed it out shortly after it happened.
Eh, don't think it was me. I was in the race for a while but I ran out of things to say...

btw Byte - Kyle's gonna help me take apart the comp to RMA the board. So no worries on having to drive again.
I remember a thread on glocktalk where a guy shot either leg or hand with a JHP self defense ammo... looked wicked!

Was working on the range one afternoon, while the local PD qualified. Cop put a .40 S&W round through the palm of his left hand somehow. Contact wound... I think they were able to save the hand, but I don't think he ever played the violin afterwards.
