Hey guys I have a nice idea for my 8mm mauser ar but another odd project that's been rolling around in my mind is building an ar10 chambered in 7.62x54r.

First I'll say don't worry about magwell room as I could use my lower I'll someday build for my 8x57mm ar10 with a lengthened magwell and no bho also I'll tighten up the fcg are and for style I was planing on building my lower from an mg42 grip ;)

As far as the bolt face does anyone know how big the pocket can be enlarged? The 54r has a big head on it but ar10 bolts look like they can be opened up quite a bit.

As far as mags at worst I could use psl mags since their cheap or maybe I could use 25 round bren mags since they're cheap as well.

now I don't want to start a debate about the 54r vs .308 I just like uncommon things.

Thanks hope to hear some ideas, Gary, I need your ar prowess lol

There are plenty of members on here with far more AR experience than I...

I've also never built an AR10... some quick research finds that a reputable dealer has built AR10 uppers for: 243 Win, 260Rem, 7mm-08, 284Win, 308Win "Match", 35Rem, 300Savage, 257Roberts, 358Win, 300SAUM, 325WSM, 6.5 Creedmore, "and more"

one of the "and more" is .450 Marlin..

an AR10 in 7.62x54R or 8mm Mauser would be a huge challenge, based on the OAL alone... custom upper & lower receivers, custom machining on the barrel & modified bolt at a minimum... it certainly would be unique!

Yes I plan to make a custom lower and move the back of the magwell back ellimenating the bho feature or changing it totally, but I also want to keep the upper standard ar10 length but I want to fabricate that myself (steel tube basicly) with the ar10 lower prints I have I believe I can pull it off. In fact a secondary idea I've had for this is having the magazine on the left side and configuring it like a fg42 ;) the only question I have yet to answer or have answered is if I can open an ar10 bolt face up enough to accomodate the big rimmed russian case head. I'll start with my 8x57 upper (with all the fab work it will make a good winter project. I think I should just buy a ar10 bolt/carrier group and a barrel extention and go from there, at worst if it doesn't work I have a few parts towards an actual ar10 build ;)
