Why does it have to be free?

Dragonman's is a greatly run range with RO's on site on teh 100yd. AND, anything goes (explosives, full auto, etc) on the 200.

There is a free, unregulated (relatively) range near Deckers in the national forest.

About a mile- mile and a half past Rainbow Falls.. Mile marker is 87-88 somewhere in there.

You almost can't miss it though, I believe it may be the only side road with a stop sign on the west side of 67 between WP and Deckers.

The site I was thinking of is a side road marked by a fence right before it (traveling southbound on CO-126).

It is a nonresidential camping area in Pike National Forest with several miles of dirt roads. If you keep to the right on the road and drive 1.5-2 miles (turn right at the fork), the road will end at a hill. The spent shell casings mark the spot.

The approximate address off of CO-126 is:
22228 County Road 126, Sedalia, CO, United States

It is in Pike National Forest, but I have never had or heard of any trouble from the U.S. Forest Service for shooting there.

I'll be honest, I'd rather drive way out to Deckers to shoot at the free range there than ever go to Dragonman's again (believe me, in time and gas you'll pay more to drive out to Deckers).

Hell it was shooting at Dragonman's a couple of times that drove me to pay the annual fee to join a private range.

Rampart will probably never open again :(

There is talk that the city is going to open a free, open to the public range near Cheyenne Mountain (probably a little bit south of town). Anyone know if there's been any movement on this?

I hear you Zundfolge. I've heard several people say that. I personally have yet to have a problem there. Sorry for yours, :-(

Dragonmans....
We had my CCW class there many years ago... they had a RO that was THE most dangerous person on the range.
What a joke.

Almost EXACTLY 1 mile to the North of Rainbow Falls. I missed it the first time though mostly because it doesn't look too much like a road and more like the access of somebody (with no money) into their property.

I was just on Mt. Herman road out of Monument and saw a LOT of places to shoot about 6.5 miles in and on through to Rampart Range Road.

To get to Mt. Herman Road, just take the Monument exist off of I-25 (NOT the Baptist Road exit, the exist with all of the restaurants).
Head West (towards the mountains).
When the road comes to a "T", turn left.
Drive approximatley 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile (maybe a mile) and Mt. Herman Road will be on your right (there is a posted sign).
If you see the Dirty Woman Creek Park on your left you passed the road by 25 yards.

There are restrictions on shooting for the first 6 miles (trailheads, etc.), but then you can't help but see the various places to shoot.

I'm supposed to take a buddy who used to hunt with me but owns no guns (he wants a S&W M&P15/22) and his brother and nephew out shooting .22's and AR's this Saturday. They grew up in East LA and were not raised with/around guns at all.

I'm torn between taking them to the South site, or taking them to one of the spots on Mt. Herman Road.

Anyone else planning to go to the South site on Saturday monring-ish (10-ish)?
