View Full Version : hunting camp b.s. .... prove it.

over the years i have heard more b.s. about peoples ability to shoot. one camp i was in many years ago, my uncle proclaimed to me that he could shoot an antelope at 325 yds every time. he guaranteed it, the next day he clean missed one at 250 or so, and then on the second shot hit it in the guts. i have heard the "i cant shoot targets for beans, but i never miss my elk". here on this site there is no shortage of "i can shoot one hole groups all day long", or i am 100% confident in my abilities to take an elk out to 550 yds".
i have no doubt that there are many good shooters here, but i also know that the number of people that claim to be world class shooters is far in excess of the number that truly are. i have heard so many people tell me how they could beat everyone on "top shot", but that they dont want to be on the show because they are too busy, or because it is in california, or some other b.s. excuse. i would like to see a "top shot" type of get together where everyone shoots the same course of fire with handguns, shotguns, and rifles. there would still be some people who would say that they got robbed, or that on that day there was some problem that they never had before, but the number would show who was full of it, and who wasnt.
i am over on the western slope and almost never get through the tunnel, so it would have to be a good get together for me to cross over the divide. but it would be nice to see how well the people who claim to be so good really are.
when i was a framing contractor and had people come to the job looking for work, i could always tell the guy that i didnt want to hire by how good they said they were. the more they talked about how great they were, the less i wanted them. that was learned by trial and error. the guys that were fairly humble almost always turned out to be a better hire.
anybody else want to put up or shut up?
Who are you referring to? I've seen what you are talking about before, but I didn't think that it was too rampant on this site.
Never shot an elk further than 200 yards. My stalking abilities are awsome, I am a ghost in the woods.
However I can pick a knats ass off your nose at 600 yds without so much as a burn.

There's a name for this,
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which “people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it”. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their own ability as above average, much higher than in actuality; by contrast the highly skilled underrate their abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to a perverse result where less competent people will rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence because competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. “Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others.”
Or to put it shortly, "90% of people think they're in the top 10%"

If you provide the land, the targets, the guns, the ammo, the refreshments and the transport, I will gladly put up. And then shut up :D
Beer,, it does a Body Good.
I've seen people say things that can be misconstrued towards what he is talking about. However, it is usually a hit and run poster talking about how they can hit their targets with their carry gun in CCW threads.
Plus there was a lot of criticism about Top Shot, but just because you criticize someone/thing, doesn't mean that you necessarily think you would have done a better job yourself, or that they/it didn't earn that criticism.
I do always get irritated when I see people posting about making a ragged hole with their hand gun when I have trouble shooting inside the 6 ring.

As I have not had the requirement to fire my carry weapon in a kill or die scenario, I cannot honestly say what I would or would not hit under what lighting, environment, situation. it Might be Overcast, no lighting in pouring Rain...
I would like to think that I have had sufficient training in combat arms to defend myself in a manner that would not put innocents at undue risk.

i didnt start this thread to piss anyone off. i started this thread because camp "wisdom" is rampant everywhere, and i thought it would be fun to see who among us is really good. i know i am a good shot, but i know i have a long way to go. like i told the casting director for top shot, i am not olympic caliber in any discipline, but i can hold my own in all.
i have seen it written over time about the accomplishments somehave made. sometimes it is "i can shoot one hole groups with it all day long", that is an impressive claim, i just wonder how many actually do it. i have shot my share of one hole groups, but i would be liar if i said i did it everytime i go to the range. usually the boasts of superior marksmanship are related to hunting. i cringe when i hear someone say that they will take a shot at a deer out to 450, or even longer. there are no doubt some among us that can do that shot ethically, but the vast majority cant. i have taken animals out to almost 1300yds, but i wont take the shot without alot of practice to confirm that i really can reliably make the shot. the year i shot an antelope at 1282yds with a 50 bmg, i fired over 700rnds practicing at ranges from 600 to 1600 yds. i also had a spotter to verify misses or hits.
i just think it would be fun to shoot with some guys that are genuinely good. most of the people i shoot with are not great shots, and they know it.
this is not a challenge to everyone to try and beat me, it is simply an invitation to get together with fellow shooters and quantify shooting skill.
if I had the dough I'd love to buy some land and build a range that recreates the challenges from top shot and run it as a disneyland for gun nuts.

Heard from a guy at work today when the conversation turned to firearms that he had a 30-30. So powerful it'd lift a man clean off his feet if you was to shoot someone. Also love the ones that know everything about guns cause they've seen every shoot'em up movie hollywood has ever made. Also this guy set the Marine marksmanship record with M-16. Holly shit and to think I was standing right next to him. Shoots to 1,000 yards regularly with his Marlin 308. [Luck]
Yea it got pretty deep, and the thing was the framers hung onto every word like it was gospel.
There is a reason we are on a forum dedicated to a firearm with a light recoil and 30 round, quick changing magazines! Its just a numbers game really!

Wow, quite a rant, who pissed on YOUR sniper rifle?
I, for one, have good days and bad. I've put lead on paper at 150 yards that I didn't think possible. I've put 12 gauge on paper at long distances - albeit that it was a peppering and probably had the velocity of a pebble being thrown into that paper, but it's happened.
Now that you've thrown down the gauntlet, what is YOUR claim my friend? I'll tell you that when I go camping I typically plink targets at 30-60 yards for fun with a pistol and that kind of practice has increased my accuracy. I won't claim that I put it in the center on each shot at 60 yards, but I'll do well enough for my taste.

I hear ya, I think it's be fun as well. Can't get better if you always play with people worse than you.
if I had the dough I'd love to buy some land and build a range that recreates the challenges from top shot and run it as a disneyland for gun nuts.
AMEN to that! I'd be a free caretaker for you... since I don't have any money, lol.
For instance, weekend focus might range from:
A) Snap caps randomly loaded into your magazines by fellow shooters (emphasis: malfunctions)
B) Special glasses worn throughout the drills (emphasis: instinctive shooting / visual obscurity)
C) Weak hand emphasis
D) Non-standard shooting positions (prone, back, etc.)
That sounds like a lot of fun too.
Something that may tie into this thread, since we are talking about "top shot" etc, is the prevalance to specialize... A lot of people will only fire one thing, a pistol or a rifle... even within those two disciplines people will tend to stick with one caliber... I think that's horrible and they are really cheating themselves from the full experience. When I go out, I like to play with everything....
Am I really the only one who Big Game hunts with a .22 Short? Its all about shot placement. If you guys can't hit an elk in the vitals at 600m with a .22, then you really should be practicing more...

I wish I had an extra $3,000 to buy enough 50 bmg just to practice to shoot an antelope at almost 3/4 of a mile...and a lot of guys hunt with 30-06 because they don't want to buy the "expensive" ammo like 300 win mag. I would say a 50 bmg is a little too heavy to walk around and hunt with but I guess you don't have to do much walking if you're shooting out to 1300 yards!

REAL men don't need tools. They walk up to the elk and simply command it to die.
To kill, I mean. When you command the elk to skin and clean itself, it often fails to comply, as everyone knows that dead elk are recalcitrant and typically poor sports about the whole thing. So you really do need tools for that part.

Oh, I can beat the "grouse with a rock" story. One bitterly cold day on TA34 at Ft Carson when they wouldn't let us walk 200m to the chow hall and instead delivered sack lunches (that sat out for several hours), a friend of mine killed a p-dog with a frozen solid orange. :D

i shot the antelope in 2000. bought the rifle and ammo in '99, back then i got re-imported surplus for $1.15 per round delivered. alot of that ammo was crap, but after you sorted it, it would shoot ok. the antelope was shot with FN armor piercing incendiary, the antelope didnt offer enough resistance to detonate the incendiary charge. without some kind of special round made to expand, or explode, all a 50 bmg does is punch a hole in something, it doesnt impart enough energy to shock the vitals like a smaller caliber bullet will. my spotter had called misses for me prior to the one i killed, but with the lack of reaction by the animal, it is possible that i shot more than one. i havent taken the 50 out for animals since.
but back to the original intent of this thread. the intent was to find other shooters who might like to get together and shoot. i think i am a decent shot, but would like to see where i stack up against others.

This is a very good path, and it's a damn humbling road to travel. The rewards are worth it, but you have to be careful that you are not selectively using a measuring device to measure you skills. What I mean is don't choose shooters from a peticular subsect of the shooting society unless you know they truely entail the full spectrum of shooting capabilities.
When I started shooting competitively I was 11 years old and it was with a shotgun. I classified as a D shooter, but I was shooting and advancing. Then I moved on to some bench rest shooting and never got too serious about it. Then in 2006, after a lot of personal shooting and military/LE shooting, I found USPSA pistol shooting and that's when I truely found out just where shooting skill can be taken. I felt like a beginner in a matter of minutes. I felt like that because I had absolutely no idea just how far shooting skills could be taken and I had to re-evaluate my perspective of what the scale was and where I fell into it. My self perspective went from one of the best military/LE shooters I knew to "Wow, I suck and didn't even know it," in a matter of one day. It's humbling and many can't take this level of realization. I found it absolutely motivating.
So, if you really want to weigh and measure you shooting skills, you don't have to get a bunch of people from a blog sight together to test it. The competitions are already out there. There are pistol, rifle, and shotgun matches all up and down the front range and on the west and in the mountains. You simply have to ask what to bring, when to be there, and for a little guidance when you first start out. THEN the hard part comes in. You have to accept the truth of a measurement of your skills based on the full spectrum that exists in these competitions. I see the impact on new shooters every week I get to a match. Some accept, some don't.
My 2 cents.

i did a service rifle shoot many years back. I got second for the day, but the second course of fire after i figured out where i was hitting, was the best of the day. the guys that put it on asked if i wanted to get together for non sanctioned shoots, i said yes, gave them my number and never heard from them again.
around here without having to drive over 50 miles ($20 in fuel), there are very few competitions. the only ones i know of are IDPA, it seems like they always have their competitions on days like opening of hunting seasons or during the baja 500 and baja 1000. i would really like to shoot service rifle, smallbore, or silhouette. i shot a round of sporting clays once, but the guys that put it on had so much attitude that i never went back. i had a $200 winchester pump, and apparently if you dont shoot an expensive over/under you are not worthy of respect.
i am looking for some informal shoot what you got, be safe, but a little more laid back than a competition shoot.
What area are you in again?
