Hi everyone, new guy here and was looking for suggestions on where to move within colorado. I may be moving to the denver area, DTC more specifically. I've read a few comments about gun laws in different counties and wanted to get some suggestions on where to move.

Just to have a little info on who I am, I'm a 28 year old guy that loves his guns and sports. I first started looking into living near coors field, which I'm very interested in. I'll be working in the DTC area but don't mind the commute (unless someone has any reasons not to commute).

Any specific counties I should stay away from that might cause me trouble with my ARs? Any suggested counties to stay in?

Thanks in advance![Beer]

Welcome...

Denver County has an AWB that makes a rifle with a high capacity mag(over 20) illegal. Add the extra taxes and all the problems and I would stay clear of Denver.

Just my 2 cents from an old guy with kids.

I think traffic into and out of downtown area would be a nightmare going to and from the DTC.

Plus I don't think that area near Coors Field is all that it is cracked up to be. More crime happens there than the news will let on. Plus with Denver's extra gun restrictions I would choose to live somewhere else (which I do). There are great places in all the surrounding counties, Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, and Jefferson.

Welcome - I'd check out the area to the south of the DTC. One good reason is that you won't have to commute through Denver to get home.
I much prefer the near-south area (down to maybe Monument) along I-25 due to the more open spaces found between the communities there.
Compare it to the same distance to the north (from Denver) and you'll find those FAR more cluttered. You'd have to travel a lot farther to get
close to the same type of settings.

Castle Rock is nice. I have a few friends who love living there, and it's about 30 minutes from downtown Denver (with good traffic).

My wife and I used to work near the DTC and we looked at Parker.

Never lived there, so grain of salt, but it looked real nice and the drive to the DTC was EASY. I would stay out of Denver proper, too much to deal with, and we live here for the outdoors, not the big city!

I-25 CONSTRUCTION AT ALAEMDA/SANTAFE will be a multi year project and is about in the middle between LoDo and DTC. look south, and be happy on your commute.

I lived/worked in DTC for a bit.

Live in DTC to start, or centennial, parker, lone tree, Very south aurora. Sign as short of lease as you can then explore the area in your spare time.

Stay out of denver proper other than visiting.

The light rail goes straight from DTC/centennial and to coors feild with one bus. Better than a DUI.

Coors feild area is full of crime, as is downtown in general. There's also a downtown living surcharge on your rent.

i work at centennial airport, close to the DTC and lived in north parker for a year, in an apartment, and now i live in south aurora, bought a house over the winter. from what i hear is that douglas county sheriff is apparently better with class 3 stuff. my 2 cents

My office is in DTC, and I live 5 minutes away in DTC. Traffic can be real bad if you are a 7-5 guy. Downtown would be a poor choice IMHO.

I am very familiar with the Parker area and in until they finish the other through-ways to I-25 it will be a disaster during rush-hour to get from downtown into Parker...unless you Take 470. DTC is alright, but still kind of a pain.

Yep, I live in Westminster. Recently had to go to Parker for a job.
A 40 minute drive in the morning, would turn into about a 1-1.5 hour drive in the afternoon.

I live in the Tech Center and love it. I'm towards the south end of it right off I-25. As others have said, if you only have to go as far as DTC stay to the south. Traffic going north out of DTC after work and south into DTC before work is pretty bad. As far as getting to down town it's as easy as taking the light rail. I do it twice a week to get to my classes at Metro State.

Like others have said, Denver has a grip of goofy laws, specifically towards firearms. If you don't want to deal with all of that avoid it. Not sure what the CCW process is there but I'm sure it's not as good as it is down here in Arapahoe County. If that doesn't bother you and you have rifles that fall under their "AWB" there's always the policy of don't ask don't tell. But you gotta decide if that's a route you want to take.

But yeah, I love DTC, everything you need or want is within a few miles. Can't go wrong living down here.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! I think it's clear I'll be staying out of Denver county. I'll likely start to look in Arapahoe as I'd like minimize the commute, pay less taxes, fewer firearm restrictions, etc.

I'm coming from California, so I've dealt with 10 rnd mag limitation and Bullet Button mag release for my AR. Does Colorado (or specific Counties within) have requirements for mag release for ARs?

Traffic on my current commute takes me 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes. I think the shorter commute by living locally to DTC will make an incredible impact on how I spend newly found time. I'm a frequent runner and enjoy running outdoors, does anyone know of any rubberized running tracks around the DTC area?

I really appreciate everyones opinions on this topic. I knew the I'd get great answers from fellow AR owners! Thanks again!

Got dogs?

Less than a year after moving here mine got banned so if you've got some of the critters you may want to check that as well.

The only restriction on AR mags is the number of rounds, and only in Denver county.

I'll be the lone nut here... I like living in Denver as far as city living goes. I prefer to live on 1,000 acres in the mountains but that will have to wait :). As for firearms, I buy 99% of my rifles from the gray market and even though 30rd magazines are illegal, I have around 250 (although I keep a large number of them at my Lakewood property). Sue me. I've talked to Denver cops about some of these restrictions and I've been told repeatedly it's a law that's never enforced unless they want another reason to bust you (sort of like having illegally dark tint on your car windows gives them a legal reason to harass gang members).

As for living here in general, I love the drive times. I'm 20 minutes from downtown, 20 minutes from the DTC and very centrally located without being "in" the city. I live on the far edge of Denver, where Littleton, Lakewood, Englewood and Denver all meet up.

I'd definitely recommend south of the DTC, such as Douglas County. I live in Parker and commute daily to downtown Denver.

I'm down in Castle Rock, and I like it. It's a little more quiet, has everything I need there, and Douglas County is pretty friendly for guns. I however, love Downtown, so I'll be moving back there around February or March.

Traffic out of Castle Rock has been terrible lately. Wish the light rail went down there...
