1st rule: is there power to the unit?
2nd rule: is the right wire in the right hole?
I assume you've got power but double check your physical cabling. Depending on how your home network is set up it might be a software/firewall issue blocking the new PC. got blinking lights on you NIC that show the cable is connected properly?

the computer says it has internet. it has the symbol that shows internet. and it says internet connection 100mbps.
i have ethernet from a dish. that goes to my router. then it goes to my wifes computer and my computer. her computer works fine. mine never has. i am sure it is the firewall or something, that i cant configure.
now if i type in a webaddress, it says at the bottom, finding.....site, then it switches to checking proxy settings. and after it does that for a while it comes up with the error, i mentioned above.
I had a similar problem because one computer was running XP and one was running Vista. Is that the case with your set up?

one is xp. one is windows 7. but, i had just the one hooked up and it wouldnt work. i think it just isnt configured right. and i have just enough geek in me to post to the internet and search craigslist.
and watch
bluetube recently.
Yeah, I'd say it is a configuration issue. Hopefully, Ridge, Byte-Stryke, Kwando, or one of the other computer guys will come along soon. Sorry for those I left out, I can't remember you all!

if you left any out, its because we have more computer gurus per capita, than anyother forum on the web. when i went to the pistol class put on by Kelly, most of the class was computer experts. except me and the spaceman. (he is probably a computer guy too, now that i think about it.)
I'd say check to make sure you're using NAT with your router but if it's the only one connected that wouldn't matter.
In XP, click start, control panel, right click network connections, properties (I think, going on memory). Select TCP/IP and make sure it's obtaining IP & DNS automatically.
Glad to help but not sure I'm following 100%.

when i go to network connections, it says
broadband connection
disconnected, firewalled
WAN Miniport (PPOE)
\and
lan or high speed internet
local area connection
connected, firewalled
broadcom netxtreme gigabit ethernet
When you right click 'network connections' do you see an option for Properties?

I'm more of the WAN side, I know a couple buttons to push on the LAN side but not good at explaining them.
Several things you can try:
To verify your physical portion is good you can swap the CAT 5 cables. Put the one that is going to the working computer on the new computer and vice versa. Hopefully your working one will still work and your good on the physical side.
In the Network Connections tab, right click on the Local Connection. You'll have the menu and should have the option to "disable", this would mean the connection is already enabled. If the option is "enable" then go ahead and enable it. A couple things down and you have "repair", you can click on that one as well and it will run a little program to check if you are connected to your hub/switch/router.
Not sure if this is relevant to this situation but depending on the security software you have it may be blocking the new connection. You can try turning off all the security software and see if you can get online that way. Turn off/disable Norton, AVG, Symantec or whatever for a few minutes to try. If you can get online, then it's going to be a setting with that software but for the love of the AR gods don't leave it turned off and stay online!! That would just tell you it's the security software and then you can play with that portion but make sure it's turned back on before surfing.
Cheers!

i have tried all of your suggestions.
i have checked and rechecked cables.
i have traded them with the other computer.
i reset the router
but the computer has a connection.
and when you type in an address it says
detecting proxy settings
then it says internet explorer could not open the search page
no security software at this time.
thats it. the computer is hooked to the internet. it says it has a connection. it says 100mbps. it is enabled. it just doesnt work.

It shouldnt, but does it have a manually entered IP address? If you right click the LAN connection, go to TCP/IP properties and see if there is an IP address or if it is set to automatically obtain an IP. Also while your there check the proxy settings. I dont know about your ISP, Comcast doesnt use proxys but some ISP's do. Try checking or unchecking proxy's. If you have tried typing in other websites and still dont work check to make sure there is no "s", http:// not https://. What service do you have? I live in FC but another Comcast guy lives out by Briggsdale, he has what wire or something like that, if you need specifics related to your ISP as far as proxy's etc I can get them from him or check it against the other PC that works.
Let us come out and shoot some coyotes and we'll fix it [M2]

I'll come out with Trlcavscout. I'll shoot at coyotes while he fixes the computer. It will really streamline the process.

you will have to wait a couple months to shoot coyotes. while they are here all the time, I never see them. We have hunted them and never gotten one, unless the snow was flying or just flew. Plus, a coyote sticks out like a sore thumb after it snows. But, then we can do that.
we have what was WhatWire, now it is skybeam. all i know is all of my computers have just magically worked with this company for the last three years. all but this one.
so, copy the ip address from the working computer to the non working one? ok didnt work.

Did you reboot?

Sorry, don't know what else to advise at this point.

You are plugged into the router via ethernet cable not wireless right? If you are wireless I bet I know what it is. If you are plugged in, you should not have an IP address stored in the TCP/IP settings.
Go to the "lan" connection in network connections, right click it and go to properties, then click on TCP/IP then properties in that window. When that pops up there should be no IP address stored in there, it should be set to obtain Ip automatically. If so go to either your web browser tool menu and or control panel internet options and see if the proxys are set. control panel, internet options, lan settings, proxy check mark? If so compare it to the other PC.
Maybe trlcavscout can make this part of the Pawnee Grasslands clean up day. ;)
I've seen a coyote standing in a field next to 14 one time while driving by.

You can't have two IP addresses working at the same time. Try it again and change the last number group to one digit higher or lower.
IP Address
Example: 192.168.0.10 (working computer)
192.168.0.11 (on non working computer)
Also make sure the net mask is set properly
Example: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway should be the same as your IP address but the last number group set to 1
Example: 192.168.0.1
Check Use The Following DNS Server Addresses.
Then use the same Default Gateway address.
Example: 192.168.0.1
These numbers are just examples so use your true numbers from the working computer and adjust as needed. See if that works for you.

It shouldnt have any address's stored, it should be set to obtain IP address automatically unless someone setup the router for statics? Skybeam doesnt use a set static or proxys.

I assumed the other working computer had an IP address set static and is working correctly by the post above. Did I not read that correctly? Just trying to help the guy out.

Ya if it does then someone set it in the router and thats his problem. Which is also an easy fix. Factory reset the router and chaching. Unless he has a networked printer, fax, lan setup etc there is no need for it.
