Pawnee Grasslands Cleanup and Shoot
9/25/2010
9:00am
Spend a few hours cleaning up and then we can shoot for as long as you want.
There have been several threads in the past talking about what a mess the Grasslands are. Well, when I was in Arizona we would do group cleanup days at popular desert shooting spots. We would take a whole bunch of trash bags and pickup trucks and clean the place up. Sure it will get trashed again but at least we can slow that process down and hopefully keep it open. If we take pictures and email them to the park rangers and show responsible gun owners cleaning up the place it might keep them from shutting it down. Who knows, maybe this can turn into a monthly deal where we pick an area and clean it up. Lots of 4x4 clubs do this out on the trail, might as well do it for our favorite shooting spots.
My suggestion is going here, this seems to be a pretty popular site to shoot: 40.676998,-104.506999

I cant open any programs that will show that on my poor ol PC. CR 61 is bad and 96 (where I go) isnt as bad but still needs cleaned. Anybody else know more areas that need TLC? I dont have a pickup but I can go on sun-wed, except this Sunday my sons birthday is 9/11 (2001/09/11) so we do his party on Sunday every year since I work Saturday.
Take your son to clean on his birthday, you will be the best dad ever Haha Ta

Mike, contact these people, and they will work with you.
I'm going to check my schedule. I don't have a truck, but I've been dying to pick up some trash. Plus I want to meet HBARleatherneck if he is there.

Oops, obviously I want to meet the rest of you guys as well. I just wanted to meet up with leatherneck as well since I have some land near him.
Is that Crow Creek near the spot there?

I'm interested but not sure about my schedule. Keep us updated and if I'm still available I'll get directions or follow someone there.
Not available on the 25th but can clean up and shoot this weekend.

Glad to see some interest in this. For those of you without access to a map, the area where we are going to be on the 25th is between CR 57 and CR 61 just south of CR 96. This seems to be a very popular site for shooting and last time I was there it was pretty trashed. If it's not too bad we can go to a different location, but for now this is what's planned.
To those of you that can't make it that weekend set something up for this weekend or next and hit up a different spot. There was a spot off of 61 that was mentioned earlier that's pretty bad. If trlcavscout could give us more details maybe that would be a place you guys could go.
What direction do people shot in from that spot?

East and west along the road following the creek south and then at that spot where the creek bed bends out to the east and circles back to the west they shoot in all directions (except north back up the road). There's some pretty good natural berms down there. People shoot out a few hundred yards to the south as well.
My plan was to make a sign that says "Shooting area closed for cleanup". If you make it look professional enough people won't come shoot down there.
Darn, I cant go on the 25th.. The Tanner show will be in town and I have to man my table.
I have cleaned up Pawnee alot though...
Just bumping up this thread as it gets closer to get some more interest and see who's all in so far. Seems like at least 5 people or so. As far as I know I am still going.

I'll still be there. I should have one or two others coming with me as well.
The only thing I can really bring is myself and my own trash bags. That's okay right?

Yep! And a few guns and ammo if you want to shoot after we clean.

Ault is having the annual international food festival the 25th! So you can stop by and get some good grub. I cant get the day off to help. I was there tonight and helped some by getting all the brass I could [Coffee] About a 5 gallon bucket full. But I will probably go again next sunday.
Do we get to call calibers and divy up usable brass at the end?

If I wasn't working that morning then going down to Colorado Springs for the evening then I would totally go with my new rifle I'm picking up tomorrow.
Oh yes, I can also bring some tarps that will make cleaning up for us easier. I recently bought a tarp to shoot with and it is SOOOO much easier to pick up brass with a tarp. I just wish I hadn't cheaped out and gotten such a small one.

I dont know if thats the same spot I am thinking about, but the one by the dry creek bed that I always went to is closed now. On a good note it did look better last night when I was out there, a lot of the big stuff was gone just alot of books, broken glass, and the usual trash, only a couple boards and what not along CR61. My usual spot on 96 is always clean, that is my pet project. If I had a pickup I would clean more when I am there.
I am considering joining one of the clubs out that way just so I dont have to deal with all that is going on out there. They are eventually gonna close most if not all because of the jack ass's shooting signs, entering the private property areas and shooting, trash etc.
I would definately like to help if you all are still out there after the service rifle match at High Plains. Please post where everyone will for sure be. I have a truck and can bring a bucket or two for brass and shotgun hulls. oops, the match is on Sunday. Anyway I'll try to be there. Just got my M1 back from the 'smith. now I gotta shoot it.

I don't mind if you cross post it. Go ahead, the more the merrier, we'll get more cleaned up.

Friday Bump for Mike, I'll be there, hope to see some others too.
I'm leaving tonight and spending the night up there so I don't have to get up as early. See you there. My car is small and red.

I won't be able to make it, did my shooting earlier this week at the DOW range near Kemmling and now have to get caught up on school work. [Rant1]
but, did clean up the area where I was shooting. Lot's of Wolf ammo lying around... that might be a clue!
Think it's kinda funny, like lazy asses at the gym. They can lift the combined weight but once it's time to put their weights back on the racks they are suddenly too heavy to lift. fucking poser.
I can load the full cartridge but the empty brass is too heavy!
Thanks for making the effort to clean up a free shooting site. I'll make it one of these days....

Bad news for me as well. I've had family stuff come up last minute. Sorry to have to bail on you guys. For those of you that can still make it please do, it still needs to be cleaned up. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
I'll be planning another one of these in about 4-6 weeks. I'm gonna scout out another location around here and we'll get that one cleaned up as well. If you have any ideas let me know.
I showed up at 8:30 this morning, waited for others to show up till 10, then went home. HBARLeatherneck showed up, we talked for a bit, and went our own ways. What a bust!

we waited all the way until 10am. so an hour past the scheduled meeting time. where were all of you?
on a sidenote. thank you so much for not showing up. I got to go to the Class that COLOCCW was putting on. it was fantastic.
Hey guys. I showed up right at 10:00am (I think I passed people who were on their way out but wasn't sure). I thought people were staying to shoot for a while and it wouldn't be a big deal if I was a little late. Anyway, I stayed until 3:00pm picking stuff up. I started to get nauseous and almost fell over so I figured I was getting heat exhaustion. I filled three tall kitchen bags with trash, mostly wads from shotguns. One of the bags weighed at least 10 lbs. I also managed to find 52 unbroken clay pigeons scattered around in the tall weeds.
On the way home I turned down the road to go check out the Pawnee shooting range, but turned around since I was already late. Then I got caught in a traffic jam on I-25 for about 45 minutes. I just now got home and have to shower and leave again.
I'll get pictures up of the all the trash, the gigantic spiders that were EVERYWHERE I went to put my hands, the spot I tried to clean, and some antelope I saw. I cleaned the very first spot, but you couldn't even tell because I didn't have a rake and mostly picked wads out of the tall grass on the sides and the ditch. I'm sure that the 10-12 trucks that went in and out while I was there made way more trash than I picked up, but it still felt like I accomplished something, even if it was a little. Sorry I missed everyone. I really thought that people were going to shoot today. I didn't fire a single shot all day long. I got bored pretty fast, but I wasn't going to make a 250 mile round trip and not clean anything.

Hmm, I hadn't noticed this post ahead of time, but as it happens I was out there with a buddy of mine from 9-12. We were at the spot just east of 57 & 88. Had to cut the cleaning short because some guys showed up wanting to shoot from the road to get a measured 100 yards, so we didn't pick up as many of the spent shotshells as we wanted to. Still managed to fill the back of my Subaru with shot-up crap -- mostly VCRs, speakers, and milk jugs.
Wish I'd seen this thread in time, we'd have scooted over and joined you. Sorry to hear it was a bust!

I don't know how the spot I use compares to the others (it's the only one I've been to) but it's certainly a mess. About a mile east of 57 & 88, on the left just a smidge past a cattle grate (40.624324,-104.507521). I didn't get any photos, but the parking area is carpeted with spent shotshells. Lots of pallets around, which could at least be neatly stacked up if they're going to be left for target stands.
I'll show up for a cleanup day if at all possible.
