I wish they did what the Russians did. Make it look like they were set free on a little life raft and turned around and mowed'em down. I have no sympathy for these ass hats Pirates

Argh! Blub Blub Blub
Questions: Why can't teh ships hire security to shoot on sight (Insurance problems? find new insurance?)? Why is the US military defending other countries ships (or were they flying our flag) in international waters? Why don't other countries get involved?
I'm sure if everyone, even personal security on merchant ships, started to shoot on sight it would deter the act of piracy pretty darn quickly and effectively...

I'm not so sure- the other options for these people are so bleak, that they'd rather die trying to steal than to live in the horrible conditions in Somalia...
Only way to curb it would be to improve Somalia to the point where it's not such a $#!+hole, and people there had a chance at a life worth living... but since they're considered to be 100% Muslim, they don't want any interference from Infidels... apparently this is the way they like it?

To me, in my opinion, that is the problem with the world. I'm not flaming you or the way you think 68charger but you pointed out something that I see is very prevalent in todays world. The use of "we need to improve, change, etc". Why can't the people living there change their conditions? Why does the rest of the world have to do it? Socio-economic chance will not occur no matter how much money and man power is pumped into a society if the people who currently live there do nothing about their own situations. It's likened to the ghettos of our country. There are so many programs and ways OUT of the ghettos if the inhabitants would just do a little grunt work... instead, they take the freebies and keep living in squalor. And yes, I DO know cause I was once there before my wisening up to going to college.
It's the whole parable about giving a man a fish and he'll starve, but teach him to fish and he'll live abundantly. Guess I'm not being a very good Samritan. I'm sick of taking care of other people when I can barely take care of myself. Literal and metaphorically.
Game on. Thanks for listening. [Beer]

The answers to your questions are very highly politically incorrect.

Why is the US military defending other countries ships (or were they flying our flag) in international waters?
From the article:
Such action isn't a change in tactics but a case of having the right people in the right place, the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain said.
The United States is part of a joint piracy taskforce that includes NATO and navies from the European Union.
The Magellan Star, attacked and captured Wednesday, was initially helped by a Turkish Navy vessel, which was the first to respond to the ship's distress calls. The U.S. warships carrying the marines then arrived and subsequently boarded the Magellan Star.
In a statement, Turkish Navy Rear Adm. Sinan Ertugrul praised the work of the multinational force, saying, "units from the multinational maritime force, under Combined Task Force 151, are actively engaged in anti-piracy operations.

I know, I know.... grrr

Rgr, thank you Jake. I got that. I was just talking to a Navy friend who is involved in some of this and his take was that we (US) are doing mostly everything, other countries just have their name on it or they are donating food or something benign like that...
I did ask him some of my own questions as posted but he is just a peon and said he just has to follow to CIC's orders... No one really wants to be there, lol.
Pete: "I don't get it. Why can't we ever have a war in the Bahamas, or Cancun, or on the Grecian Islands, or someplace nice that I actually want to go to?" HAHAAHA

I think that's what most people think about most subjects. But we do have a bigger and better navy than everyone else!

I wasn't saying WE need to fix Somalia- in fact, we CAN'T.. just by interfering, they'll say the Infidel is on more Muslim ground, and it'll get worse...
I was just stating the facts that until conditions are better there, Piracy is still the best option for many from Somalia...
So there's no misunderstanding, I'm all for ships defending themselves... I just don't think it will stop piracy cold- slow it a bit, perhaps...
Russia's solution just guarantees there will be no repeat offenders...
How about that other parable? Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a night.. set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Agreed and great parable! HAHAHAHA.

Actually in that part of the world, the NATO, Russian, India, and China have been as if not more active in the anti piracy operations and raids compare to the US NAVY.

You are dead wrong here, we CAN shoot the people but we aren't allowed to harm the Parrot, it's protected by PETA (which to me is Proper Eating of Tasty Animals). [ROFL3]
Would it still be "Muslim land" if it was kind of glassy and radioactive?

It's getting to be a dicy situation in Somalia. It seems that our U.S. supported ally in Somalia needs protection from Al Queeda.Well these pirates ,who hijacked approx.34 ships last year need to spend there ransom money somewhere;and their doing it by forming well armed land militia's.So this man, who is our U.S. ally is trying to woo these pirates, who now have vehicle mounted antiaircraft guns,to come over to his side, instead of A.Q.'S side.So what can the U.S. do to the pirates, besides the one's that have'nt been caught, killed, or drowned; where there seaside town, is patrolled by scowl faced, AK welding ,10 year old boys?
