View Full Version : Bicyclist rant

I just got back from attempting to have a nice lunch in Denver with my wife but instead I just got pissed because three, yes three, bicyclists ran stop signs directly in front of me in less than 30 mins. Here’s my story, it may be kinda long…
While heading to pickup my wife in the vicinity of 6th and Broadway I came to a 4 way stop. Across from me was another vehicle already stopped. After letting him go because he was there first, I started to enter the intersection and make a left hand turn. Out of nowhere comes some bitch on a bicycle in front of me that blasts through the stop sign heading in the opposite direction. As I had already entered the intersection and started my turn she came awfully close to finding out first hand what a chrome bumper tastes like. But of course, she yells at me and gives me the finger. Sorry ho-bag, I guess I forgot bicyclists don’t have to stop.
After having lunch, my blood pressure was coming down a little and I pointed my truck towards home. The first 4-way stop I come to, what happens? Oh yes, after making a complete stop and not seeing anyone coming I enter the intersection going straight and some yuppie chick flies through the intersection from my right without even slowing down. She again is lucky I stopped in time because admittedly it was hard to see around the cars parked along the side of the road. Just another reason maybe she should have followed traffic rules and stopped at the sign.
I go on my way and not 3 intersections down, another fucking douche on a bicycle flies through a 4-way stop in front of me after I had entered the intersection. This time I can’t contain myself and yell out the window “you just ran a stop sign you fucking ass hat!” And again, this dude flips me off.
Now I know all these bicyclists riding around during the day think they are some special kind of individual better than everyone else because they are exercising and saving the planet while they are getting to where they are going. But I am driving a 5,500 lb truck while getting to where I'm going and I imagine it is very capable of turning any bicyclist into a meat pancake although I would really not like to find out. So please, would every fucktard on a bicycle put down their wheat grass juice and ugly ass spandex just for a minute and instead attempt to have a small shred of personal preservation and follow the rules of the road.
And to any LEOs reading this, please do me a favor and start writing these better-than-thou granola eating yuppies tickets every time they make a traffic infraction. They want to share the road but they don’t want to follow the rules. I know police witness this every single day because you can’t go anywhere in this state without a tool on a bicycle running a stop sign or light. Why aren’t they getting fined for it? And while you are at it, please give the guy trying to ride a scooter while talking on a cell phone that fell off said scooter in front of me in an intersection a ticket as well as every fucker that is too lazy to move their left hand two inches to use their turn signal. They all should loose their license. It is the easiest damn thing to do but 9 out of 10 assholes can’t seem to muster the energy or brain power to flick that little lever when they are turning or changing lanes. Damn I hate people.

Amen brother!
I ride my bike to the light rail when I head up to class. I stop at stop signs and follow the rest of the traffic laws because I don't think the idea of becoming a hood ornament sounds too fun. That and it pisses me off when bikers do stupid shit as well. Next time let them hit you, grab your neck in pain and call an ambulance, see how they like that!
I give the rant a 7/10 for intensity, 9/10 for readability, and 8/10 for language. [LOL]
I am a bicyclist as well as a motorist and motorcyclist. I must be to only one in the metro area that actually stops for stop signs/lights. Then again, I have a pretty strong self preservation instinct.
I have actually hit bicycles before when they don't stop for signs. Granted it's only like 5-10mph, but it still throws them off the bike. I get cursed at and they bang on my hood and claim I wrecked their 5K special bike and broke their leg etc but when I get out and inform them they ran a stop sign and I'm calling the cops they magically get better and hop on the bike and storm off.... Funny how that works. I used to get all mad but if they want to share the road, then I'm all for it!! I garuntee you I'm walking away from a bike/car accident.

Dude, I feel ya. The best way I can I can describe the way I think the majority of bicyclists feel is . . . entitled. I don't think a lot of them feel like they want to share the roads. I think a lot of them feel like the road is theirs before it is yours so deal with it. And Colorado seems to be a very "bicyclist friendly" state for some reason too which doesn't seem to help them follow the rules.

Made me laugh man...that is funny shit! Good vent/rant...
I ride...off-road only (drawing blood and forcing self-induced physical damage is the only way to do two wheels IMO), don't own any spandex and I don't associate (enable?) with the two-wheel commuter crowd.

You're in the right- In Colorado, Bicyclists have to follow traffic laws like vehicles, not pedestrians... From the other thread:
Last time this came up, it got a little outta hand... [Peep]
This is where we left the last thread (besides some threats that someone's keyboard could kick someone else's keyboard's ass)
I'm curious if you call the police & report them as a obstructing traffic, or violating other laws (running stop signs?) would they ticket them? because they don't have license #s, you'd have to follow them until the police arrived... While I'm not for more gov't regulations, IF bicycles had license#s, then you could report the douchebags that give cyclists a bad rap..
When/where I grew up, bicycles did NOT get the same treatment as cars, for example, you could NOT get in the right side of the left turning lane & turn with traffic, cycles were treated as pedestrians.. I understand that's not the case in Colorado- which I'm not sure is a good idea (especially since they're not licensed like vehicles), I'm curious if anyone has studied which method of legislating cyclists is safer? It seems to me that Colorado's method leads to a lot of anger on both sides..
http://bicyclecolo.org/articles/colorado-statute-42-4-1412-pg45.htm
Note that cyclists violating these rules are subject to a class 2 misdemeanor traffic offense.. same as 'Reckless Driving', '25mph above speed limit', or 'Speed Contest' (racing).. except they can't suspend their driver's license.. punishable by jail term of 10 to 90 days and/or a fine of $10 to $300.
report them- that should really get their attention.. and if they keep it up, and keep getting reported, the system should start to see a pattern of repeated offenses, and increase the penalties. (hopefully)
if you're a cyclist, and see another violating the rules, let them know it's not cool, and report them if they continue.. you have to separate yourselves from the douchebags, or you may be included with them (guilt by association)
Paintball markers? digital photos & creating a "douchebag cyclists" website to post them on? Digital photos & file police report?

I am glad to hear that those here that are cyclists pride themselves on following the laws. I truly appreciate those cyclists that follow the rules because it seems like it is few and far between. I don’t hate on the good guys.
I do agree that if you want to ride a bike on the road, you should have to get a license to do so. Of course this wouldn’t apply to anyone riding in the park, mountains, bike trails, etc. But that previous thread kept saying “report them.” And again I say, how? The police would have laughed if I called and told them some ho-bag granola eating yuppie wearing pink spandex and a purple helmet ran a stop sign while on a yellow bike. I’m sure they’d be all over that. There is absolutely no way to report that shit. That’s why I have to ask, why don’t the police write tickets? I don’t drive everyday but I see bikers doing this stuff every time I drive. Now, wouldn’t it be reasonable to think that a police officer that does drive all day everyday would see this all the time? If they wrote tickets when they did see it, word would spread and it would be reduced. Same with the turn signals. Just 3 days ago I watched a guy unexpectedly change lanes directly in front of a Lakewood police officer without signaling and they all just kept on going. Please don’t take that as any disrespect to LEOs, my Dad was an Arizona Highway Patrol officer for 20 years and I respect LE to the highest level. But damn…why no tickets for bicyclists or failure to signal???
I used to do lots of mountain biking but haven't in like 10-11 years. We just got one of those kid trailers to pull behind my bike because we thought my 1 year old daughter would love it. And she does but I must admit, riding a bike, is not like riding a bike if you know what I mean. I had to make many solo trips around my neighborhood before I felt like I could actually ride a bike again. I do ride a motorcycle so I thought getting back on a bike would be no problem…I must have looked like a fool riding around the neighborhood like a kid just learning to ride a bike. Anyway, we stay only in our neighborhood in the burbs when riding as a family. No way I am bringing the family anywhere near traffic.
PS – nothing would make me happier than “marking” law breaking bicyclists with paintballs but something tells me the police wouldn’t like that too much.

I have always given way to bike riders. Partially because I have seen what a squished body looks like. My gripe is and always been the bikes on roads with speed limits above 50 mph. I am clipping along at 50 and a bike is going MAX speed at what 15-20? That is scary. Now I think bikes should be registered to ride on the streets, as they point out they are entitled, it’s their right. So by proxy they should have licensed plates and pay registration. Ok, now enforcement should take place based on infractions.
Bottom line, pay for the "right" to use the road; get ticketed when you break the rules.
Also, traffic statutes are rules, not laws. So although you get a ticket you're not in violation of the criminal statute until you fail to pay the fine or commit an offense of a criminal statute.

Huh? Where'd you get that idea? Title 42 of the Colorado Revised Statutes are laws put in place to deal with traffic and are listed in 42-1-101 as "Articles 1 to 4 of this title shall be known and may be cited as the 'Uniform Motor Vehicle Law'."
Sorry Chris! They aren't rules, they are laws!

Yeah, there's nothing like watching some bicyclist run a stop sign or red light and then scream at and flip off someone in a car who had a green light, and the right of way. Guaranteed if I ever see one do that and get hit, I'll be pulling right over to be a witness for the driver. This entitlement crap they seem to think they have is BS. [Rant1]

Great rant. I'll run a stop sign when I ride a bike, but only if there aren't any cars around. I'll also at least slow way the hell down first.

Sorry Chris! They aren't rules, they are laws!
I stand corrected. CRS has punitive rules for driving.
Well I have to add my comments as they piss me off too!
They want their 3 foot passing gap, well:
Extend the same courtesy to me when I’m out running. At least one bike passes me within inches every time I’m out running. One of these days I’ll set my German Sheppard on them!
Don’t ride in packs half way across the road! By the time I eventually get passed you I feel the need to wash my windshield thoroughly!
Also if you’re on the wide side aka a weekend rider don’t wear spandex! You look like a multi-colored Michelin Man!
On the plus side I have seen the cops pull cyclists over in Longmont – sweetJ
This rant is right up my ally, I hate those bastards and have gotten to the point now that I don't come to a screeching halt if they zip through a stop and I'm about to hit them, I'll just hit them if I have to and know that I'm in the right on it. The other thing that really pisses me off is when they zip across three lanes on the road (like dick-weed cars do) - for these guys if they get close enough to me I intentionally swerve over so that they are destined to play chicken with my SUV. I get flipped off all the time from them but I'm happy to make their life miserable. If they would just obey the laws that the rest of us do then there wouldn't be so much animosity, but this happens so much that now I'm just out to get them :).
Oh, and to the morons who wear spandex with "sponsors" on them, YOU ARE NOT LANCE ARMSTRONG YOU MOUSE DICK, spandex is a privilege, NOT a right!

Buddy of mine had his all original showroom 60ish Dodge Dart hit by a Bicyclist running a stop sign.
Sued the living SHIT of of him...
the replacement parts and lose of value for the vehicle, etc etc etc was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Well duh car insurance doesn't cover when you ride a bicycle. Home owners probably would have though.
Also, I think the last shit talking thread about bicycles caused us to lose one of our good members. Might be partially because he moved to NM, but I still suspect that thread had a lot to do with it.

Wow. I would think a bike hitting you would be part of your comprehensive coverage...but does a bicyclist count as an uninsured motorist? Or a falling object? Act of God? For all those who say next time let the bike hit you...no thanks. Even minor fender damage from a bicycle and its operator would cost a lot to repair. Although not a bicycle, a buddy of mine got hit by a motorcyclist that ran a stop sign and the motorcyclist went through the window, ending up in the back seat of his double-cab. I guess that makes it easy to get the guy to the hospital! I'll just continue to stop, call them ass-hats and return home to vent to you guys. It's all about the Benjamins and that is certainly cheaper than automotive body work! Every dollar I don't spend is one dollar closer to a another new gun...
A bicycle hitting you is covered by collision on YOUR auto policy; assuming you have collision. Byte Stryke was saying that the bicyclist's auto insurance didn't cover him, which is true.

My Mother got rear-ended by a "undocumented worker" with a "loaner vehicle" that had less that state required Insurance coverage...
She filed a claim for her Medical and Collision damages....

I gotta say . . .
As you can tell by my first post in this thread I get annoyed with bicyclists just as much as the next guy. However, I'd like to put a different spin on the much hated (apparently) bicyclist.
All in all they're just people doing their thang. Some of them are entitled assholes and feel like they own the road. Others are not and make efforts to abide by the rules. A good analogy would be gun enthusiasts. Some of them are careless and give the rest of us a really bad name. Others are responsible which helps keep us out of the negative spotlight.
It's all about respect. Don't be a deuche and, hopefully, you won't be treated like as such. Put yourself on a pedestal, act like you're the shit, you'll start to smell, and people will let you know.
Ride the hell out of your bikes. Stay the hell out of Hilldale Pines, were all tired of it up here.
