I recently converted a Chinese SKS from the factory 10 rd box mag to a 10 rd removable metal mag of unknown chinese brand.< Yeah Yeah Yeah.
Question is, now that I have that mag in, the bolt will not lock to the rear to reload with stripper clips.
Is this common and will a TAPCO SKS mag(or other brand) allow the bolt to remain locked to the rear???
Or is this the result of removing the factory equipment?
Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's all about the follower. I converted one of my Yugos to accept hi-cap mags and I encountered the same thing as you are now. I think (it was awhile ago) the new magazine's follower either wasn't going up high enough to engage the BHO or the shape of the new follower wouldn't allow engagement. If you Google this issue you'll find a bunch of different forum posts about it. I believe it's a pretty common issue.
I have some hi-cap SKS mags somewhere. I'll try to dig them out and take a gander to see if it jogs my memory a bit more. It was a couple years back when I had encountered this problem so I apologize about my uncertainty. I ended up converting my SKS back to the original configuration. Wanna buy some SKS mags? [Tooth]

The first SKS I bought I thought it would be a good idea to install an aftermarket 30rnd mag. It would hold the bolt open after the last shot most of the time but once, and the last time I ever used it, the mag let the open bolt go right after I loaded it with a stripper clip and somehow it shot off a round...down range. Just be careful. Yeah Yeah Yeah sorry I couldn't resist.

I should check my post more often!
Well I finally took this particular mag and SKS to Dragonmans last week.
The mag is a POS!!
It gives me to much trouble removing it, I dont want to widen the mag well anymore then what it is already, since I was using a scope I could not use strippers and had to load each round individually. It was a slow process and the it was just an overall bad experience.
So in the For Sale section I will post a gently used (but often cussed at) SKS Mag for sale!!! JK!
I will definitely look for a TAPCO since I have heard only rave reviews for there SKS mags. I have some AK and Sten TAPCO mags and they always work like a dream.
I have some Tapco mags I could part with too. But they are pretty wide. I would buy another stock to widen the mag well or buy a AM stock (they come wide enough). Then you can switch back to the matching original stock with out wrecking it.
