Has anyone done it before?
My understanding of the law as it's written is that 20+ round magazines are really the sticking point for the city&county of Denver. The law as it's "enforced" is another matter, but I'd be interested to hear others' experiences.
I don't even put the magazines in the case with the firearm. I leave them in my rangebag and never have any problems. TSA guys don't know what pmags are if not with a rifle.

I think if you are declaring a weapon, its secured within accordance with the TSA that it can be safely argued that you are traveling through Denver with it.
which is one of their little stipulations.
you should be fine

In case you have not done it before a couple of points. Make sure you have a TSA approved case. DO check the airlines size and weight restrictions as the fees vary widely. My case was 3" to big so it incurred a $175 charge each way on top of the $25 carry on fee. :(
Otherwise the TSA guys were very professional. The guy in Portland coming back was like open it. Unloaded? Close i........ Oh, wait. That IS nice. OK, close it.

I've traveled with hunting rifles. Sometimes TSA and/or ticket agent wants to see sometimes not. Have the right kind of locks. Last time I flew NO TSA locks on your case. Locks must be yours and you only posses key. It is kinda fun to walk through DIA with a rifle. Like reading a gun magazine on the airline only better.

I've flown into and out of DIA with all kinds of guns, including a full auto M4. Get an approved case (I had a Pelican), use approved locks, store any ammo and mags in another suitcase. Ammo is best shipped in plastic ammo containers separated from the firearm; 11 lbs max. If they ask how much ammo you have, the answer is ALWAYS, "under 11 lbs."
I have had boarding attendies check the gun, but usually at DIA they will escort you over to a TSA sub-room to check and X-ray the case.
I have yet to have a problem with it, and I have yet to meet a courier rep or TSA rep that knew crap about guns much less mag restrictions. If it comes up, keep them locked in the other bag and state your are traveling through Denver county only.
isn't the ban in Denver county and City?

I had no problems coming out of DIA with my AR in a Pelican case along with my magazines in the same case. I don't imagine it would be any different checking the case since I had little trouble with that as well. No troubles with TSA either even after putting 500 rounds through the gun and not having cleaned it the day before.

I've taken my ARs and several 30 rounders through DIA multiple times, never had an issue. You can even travel with loaded mags as long as they are in a mag pouch, or the PMAGs have the feed lip clip on. Most of the TSA guys stare for a minute then move on. The passengers behind you in line on the other hand....[Tooth]
If you are carrying full auto. Make sure you tell them it's semi-auto. I know for a fact that one airline won't carry full-auto even though there is no mention of it on there website but it is in the company rules that you as a passenger can't see. They will NEVER know the difference.
