Because the WWII memorial is so new, a vast majority of WWII Vets have never seen the monument. Not only that but these Vets can't afford to fly to DC so that they can see it. Honor Flight (http://www.honorflight.org/) organizes trips and flys them out there for free, they are a great organization. Sunday night the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight will be returning to DIA at 9:05pm. Some folks in the area are going to be welcoming them home just like we do for our troops returning home from Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world. Here's the email I received:

Here is the information on the arrival of the WWII Veterans on the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight. The veterans will land at DIA at 9:05pm on Sunday September 19th. We will gather at the main terminal by the fountain. We are encouraging a large turnout to welcome them home.

I have so much respect for these guys, I would do anything for them. Just showing up to the airport to show them how much we appreciate what they did for us is something very small that we can do. The wife and I are going and it would be great to see a bunch of you guys out there as well.

That's great people are doing that. And by that I mean sending them out there and seeing them when they get back. I have been to that memorial. It was beautiful and very well done. I'm passing this info on to others who might care.

Bump.

I was out of town or I would have shown up :(

Some friends and I went to Normandie for the 60th. Quite a place, I tell ya. If I hit the lottery, I'm funding a trip for HS seniors every year. Its humbling to think about not just the actions and stories of every marker there, but also to think that WW2 will pass from living memory in my lifetime.

side commentary: The difference in the French when coming from Paris out to Normandie....well...I felt right at home. There are "country" folk all over this world.

Cool stuff, sorry I missed this post. I was out in DC back in April or May and went to the WWII memorial, and it was pretty heavy. My grandad was pretty close to passing at that point, and there were a bunch of WWII vets there, and since my grandad served in that war, I got fairly emotional. I loved hearing his stories about WWII: he was on a ship in the Sea of Japan as a radio operator.
