View Full Version : Who's afraid of heights?

Irving

I saw this video a few years ago and have been looking for it since. I thuroughly enjoyed showing it to the fiance who is VERY afraid of heights. I can watch a video like this and be totally comfortable, but being there would be nerve wracking.

Enjoy!

I got nervous just watching that. If they showed it in imax I'd probably have a panic attack.

"panic attack"? I'd crap my pants! [ROFL1]

Heights don't bother me - it's DEPTHS that I have an issue with.

So, think the union steward would come to his "place of work" to hear a grievance?

Was that a Stormtrooper following him up the tower?

Naw, you couldn't pay me enough. I'd eat drywall and cardboard to survive before I'd do THAT for a living.

Almost makes you wonder just how tall the "Tower of Babel" was supposed to have been.

I knew what this was going to be before I even opened the thread... not watching that again! It reminds me of this I watched a couple of years ago:

I would last about 3 seconds outside that elevator, freeze up, hands cramp then fall. I didn't consider myself afraid of heights but that's just crazy.

I've worked on steel 85-90 feet up, but that's just nuts.

I don't mind depths, small spaces, snakes, and so on; but open heights like that bother me.

(full body shiver!)

Irving
09-16-2010, 21:25
Yeah, I also don't consider myself afraid of heights, but I wouldn't call myself comfortable either. Basically, the higher up I am, the slower I move and the less balance it feels like I have.

Ok, I just watched the vid and all I can say is, SCREW THAT!!!!!!

Irving

So your holding onto that tower with your hands...

because there is a SHARK on your legs! You can't shake him off and your grip is slipping!

Irving
09-16-2010, 22:31
Okay I changed my mind. You remember those virtual roller coasters they used to have at the mall? The ones where you just watch a big screen and the whole unit moves? They should put this video in one of those, but not tell people that it moves. Like just invite people to watch it for a few minutes, and right toward the end, just tilt the whole thing forward. That'd be funny. I've seen enough people say how just watching this freaks them out.

Stu, if there is a shark magically flying up that tower after me, I'll just assume that God wants me to be eaten by that shark.http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/images/icons/icon12.gif

SCREW THAT! It wouldn't matter if the job paid $300,000/yr.

Irving
09-16-2010, 23:08
Someone in another thread suggested those guys get paid/bill $225/hr. No one verified though.

Also, I bet those guys were Mexicans, since they only do the jobs Americans don't want to do.

I would have to say no. I would not do it.

Closest I got to that was when I was hanging signs and billboards up by the pressbox at Coors Field.

At night........they wouldn't turn on any lights for us.....

with the vinyl sign blowing around my head.....

yeah, no fun. But I can laugh about it now.

I always said I'd do whatever it takes to feed my kids. If that was the only job left, the kids would be fending for themselves. Damn things could starve before I climb that thing. And I can't believe he wasn't wearing a parachute!

jake

Would be a great way to do it. Climb all the way up, do your job and then just jump off.

Call me greedy, but if I getting a bunch an hour as I am sure they are, you better believe I am using safety gear on a job like that. I would like to hear the boss complain about that one.

The reason I don't like "depths" is because I can fall those depth's but I've never heard of anyone falling up (heights).

Ah, no. Fook dat. I couldn't even watch it all. Skydiving never bothered me, but NFW I'm climbing any damn towers.

I worked as a steeplejack for 10 years back east. We did radio towers, water tank, and steeples, but in all honesty I don't think I could do that tower. [Help]

BigBear
09-17-2010, 08:08
It doesn't bother me. If I knew the tower would hold me I don't think I'd have a problem doing it, especially if it paid well. The problem I would have is that it didn't look like those cats were using very much in the way of safety gear.... I would have to be tethered, even if it meant I moved slower.

They should just hire base jumpers for that job! Climb it, fix it, and an easy way down! lol.

Free climbing without any safety[Help] No way. That is crazy scary.
Somebody that can do this has something missing from their brain. People are allowed to do this but California is trying to outlaw BigMacs???

09-17-2010, 09:23
What I don't understand is what's the hurry? If you're getting paid by the hour use the safety stuff. It must be a 'macho' thing.

BigBear
09-17-2010, 09:26
I bet "the hurry" was two things: First being complacency as in they've done this a thousand times, no big deal, and the second being that they want to get up, do their work and get down as quickly as possible. If you noticed, they passed lightening rod captures and other devices on the way up. I would not want to be up there on a cloudy day, much less in rain, etc....

Irving
09-17-2010, 09:37
Did any of you listen to the video? They say that tying off every time takes too much time and energy, so they just don't do it.

BigBear
09-17-2010, 10:14
I did, hence my comments right above yours....

Irving
09-17-2010, 10:20
Well if you listened, then I wasn't ribbing you, silly.

I do seriously wonder about the legitimacy of just jumping off and chuting down. Can't you get a chute in a pretty small package?

It'd make for a sweet prank on your last day on the job, that's for damn sure.

Opens lunch sac. "Peanut butter and jelly again?! I can't take it!! AAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

BigBear
09-17-2010, 10:46
I don't know about the legitimacy of hiring base jumpers to do the work...

I do think their insurance would sky rocket (pun intended) and there are laws that do prohibit base jumping.... so I don't know.

It WOULD be one hell of a prank though! HAHAHAHA.

Irving
09-17-2010, 10:52
It'd be better if the other worker caught wind of the prank and brought his own chute, and jumped off after the guy.

About jumping, I was thinking more along the lines of having the techs get certified to be jumpers, rather than the other way around.

Rgr. Oh man, I'm cracking up just thinking of how wrong and fun a prank like that would be.

Rigger 1: My wife was yelling at me this morning...
Rigger 2: About what man?
New guy: ....
Rigger 1: She said I was a no good dead beat and I should die.
Rigger 2: I hear you man... What'd ya bring for lunch? It's about that time.
New guy: My wife packed me a salami sandwhich! She's a great cook.
Rigger 1: Whoa, settle down young buck. You got the worlds greatest wife huh?... *rummages around in sack and pulls out sandwhich*. Peanut Butter?! GD PB&J?! Why that no good! She knows I'm allergic to Peanuts!!!
Rigger 2: Uh oh, now calm down Jerry. Mike why don't you call teh boss and...
Rigger 1: FFFFUUUU!!!! *Jumps*
Rigger 2: Shit! Not my friend, not you Jerry! I'm coming man, I'm comin'!!! *Jumps*
New Guy: ..... oh my...... shit.....

I had a few "long climbs" in my career, nothing like that though.
Believe me, unless the safety guy is tagging along, You just want to get there and get done.. The less time "working" in the nosebleed section is always a good thing. Now, if you want to "hang" out for a few and enjoy the view for a few after you are done....

They only climbed 178'. [Dunno]

Nope, couldn't see aid climbing that. Too much time and energy. I was surprised at the lack of hand holds at the top of the tower.

Maybe in my younger, younger, younger years but not today. [Faint]

ronaldrwl
09-17-2010, 13:34
I'd have to say I'd do it

Wow[Beer]

It's really not THAT crazy to free climb that. Why? Because they took an elevator to 1600 feet. Free climbing 1700 feet would be nuts (body couldn't take it) but the difference between free climbing a 200 foot tower and free climbing the top of a 1800 foot tower is the same. 200 feet will kill you just as easily as 1800 will. Just because the ground is further away doesn't make it any more "risky" than the lower level climbs.

My knees knocking tells me there is a difference[Help] I'd want two hooks. So there always be one hooked to something.

And when is the last time you slipped off a ladder.

I don't remember because it was probably only 4 ft off the ground:)

The fall won't kill you at all.

It's the deceleration trauma at the end of the fall that you have to be careful of.

I think it would be fun to climb that tower. I think they are near Greenville SC, at least if they are the ones I am thinking of.

With my luck and all the wires around, a parachute would just get tangled up.

I climb our parachute drying tower (4 story) several times a day just to keep the blood pumping.

I watched the video again, and there are a few parts where they are climbing stuff that just happens to be climbable, but not designed for it. The part that makes me the most nervous, is where he is reaching around that pole with nothing to hold onto but the bolts and nuts.

theGinsue
09-17-2010, 18:06
It would really suck to get a case of the fumble fingers and drop a bolt.

Especially if it went through the hodd & into the engine of the vehicle you came in.

That last part - climbing the 3" or 4" pipe... almost made me sick watching it...
Nope - couldn't do it.

As bad as I thought hte rest was, that part cinched it for me. There is no way that could be particularly stable.

It'd make for a sweet prank on your last day on the job, that's for damn sure.

Opens lunch sac. "Peanut butter and jelly again?! I can't take it!! AAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

Now that's scary funny. I could see the third ("new") guy in Bear's scenario thinking "Well..." and jumping too.

It's the deceleration trauma at the end of the fall that you have to be careful of.

Yes, at the bottom of the "depth"! Always the worst part. Although, they say that people who fall from tremendous heights often die of shock/fea before hitting the ground. Then again, that may just be to ease the minds of family/friends.

For me it's not heights so much as it is edges. I'm fine in a plane or at the top of the sears tower, but you make me climb on the fire escape of a 12 story building I'd be unhappy.

My old job was inventorying cell sites and urban areas most are on top of buildings. Several times I found myself perched up in some precarious places.
